In 2013, musician Ziggy Marley, son of the uber famous Bob Marley, started a company called Ziggy Marley Organics. The company offers organic hempseeds and coconut oils--both very common ingredients in the Jamaican, Rasta, Persian, Israeli, and ital (natural, whole) foods he eats and cooks at home. After he became involved in manufacturing Ziggy Marley Organics, he felt inspired to publish this cookbook. The book is organized into categories that aren't quite breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After he became involved in manufacturing Ziggy Marley Organics, he felt inspired to publish this cookbook. The book is organized into categories that aren't quite breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He titles his sections Rise, All Day, Midday, Evening, and Sweets. Most of the recipes contain nuts, seeds, and oils (not butter). Eggs, fruits, and vegetables are popular ingredients, too. The All Day section is basically fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies. The Evening section (i.e., dinner options) is a tricky one for our family. Almost all of the recipes are fish-centered. They look good and easy enough to create, but my two-year old has a severe fish allergy, so we can't even try them. The recipes I have cooked, though, are flavorful and completely doable. (The fruit and spice "shots" have been the most fun for me to try out.) If you are looking for a little guidance in making healthier food, this cookbook might be a good place to start.

I have always liked Ziggy Marley’s music so when I saw that he also had a cookbook out, I was curious. It was presented in an email to me with an offer for a free copy. Part of the pitch said it has “many vegan and vegetarian recipes. Normally, I will only accept cookbooks that are vegan or at least vegetarian but I made an exception for this one. The book is beautiful with colorful ingredients and photos of many of the dishes. Just look at the cover to get a glimpse of the beauty! However, I was disappointed that there were not as many vegan and vegetarian recipes as I was lead to believe. I know some people consider fish to be vegetarian however; real vegetarians will tell you that “if it can stare back at you, it’s not vegetarian.” Since this book has many fish recipes, I think that is where the confusion came from. That said, there are a few veggie recipes and there are some that can be tweaked to become vegetarian or even vegan, if you know how. My favorite recipe is the Coconut Curry Squash Soup. It was already vegan, so no tweaking required. It was so flavorful that I have already made it twice. The lental Soup was good as was the Tofu In Coconut Carrot Curry. There are also some nice salad and smoothie recipes. Seeing photos of some of the fish and chicken dishes were a bit off putting to me but I did know the risk I was taking accepting this cookbook so I certainly can’t take points off for that. Over all, it is a solid cookbook with some good recipes. It would be especially good for someone transitioning to vegetarian.

I received this book as part of the Goodreads First Reads program. If you are looking for a cookbook with really healthy meals made with whole organic ingredients give this cookbook a try. What I liked most about this cookbook was that I could tell the recipes were real recipes that were made in Ziggy's house. They seem easy enough to make and some of the items are easy enough to make daily. I also liked the special items that you would make for a special occasion. Who doesn’t love Ziggy Marley? The Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook is a collection of recipes drawn from his own cooking as well as from his family, his mother, aunt, daughter, sister, wife, her mother, and their friends. This brings several influences into the recipes for a lot of variety. The recipes are organized by time of day, though you should not think of it as Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. He has a more free-form idea than that. The All Day section is mostly a collection of juice drinks and snacks. The emphasis is on healthy ingredients with lots of vegetables bringing bright colors and visual appeal to the dishes. Marley’s recipes rely on lots of spice to add flavor. For example, the usual roasted cauliflower recipe usually suggests some olive oil and kosher salt. Marley adds garlic, pepper, cumin, paprika, and curry powder. Yum! The photos are an integral part of the cookbook. The food looks so delicious, colorful, bright, and bold. I love that the baking pans are old and discolored with countless use. This is not the antiseptic cooking of a catering kitchen, it is family-style with pans that have done their duty for years and show it. Pictures of the family eating and enjoying the food add to entire family-centric feeling the book creates. This is a great cookbook. The recipes are all pretty easy and realistic for home books. Some are super simple like the fennel salad that simply fennel, salt, olive oil, and lemon juice. Others are slightly more complex, but none will require hours of detailed preparation. There’s an assumption that whoever is cooking these recipes has a life outside the kitchen and is probably multi-tasking while they cook. My one quibble is the degree of marketing in the recipes. Several of the recipes include coconut oil, hempseed, or flavored coconut oils produced by Ziggy Marley Organics, his food company. They can be substituted, though, with other coconut oils or hempseed. He also lists Bragg Apple Cider rather than just apple cider. I understand using name brands when it’s your own company, but I would still rather see just a mention at the beginning of the book rather than throughout so many recipes. It’s a bit of commercialism that becomes heavy handed when you repeatedly read “Ziggy Marley’s Coco’Mon Coconut Oil or coconut oil of your choosing.” But aside from that, this is a beautiful cookbook filled with easy, healthy recipes that are not only delicious, they are a feast for the eyes. Ziggy Marley and Family Cookbook will be published on October 11th. I was provided a e-galley by the publisher, Akashic Books, through Edelweiss. https://tonstantweaderreviews.wordpre...

It's the cookbook of my dreams because it contains recipes of my favorite ingredients: vegetables/fruits, chickhen and fish. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet but I can't wait to go for them. Even the book itself had an affordable price tag and I love the beautiful family photos in it. So why only 3 stars? Though the ingredients are mainly affordable and available they included for example some fish that I consider expensive and difficult to prepare and I don't know where to find some particular spices like Jamaican allspice here in Scandinavia.

I really loved this cookbook because there’s just enough context in it to pique your curiosity about his culture and approach to food and feeding his family. None of the less this is a beautiful, well-designed cookbook with gorgeous photos and easy-to-read recipes. His fish recipes and stout gingerbread recipe in particular are excellent. Not your average celebrity cookbook: I think this guy really loves food, place, and cooking meals for his family.

I love the simplicity and elegance of the recipes. Easy to understand recipes, and some combinations I had not even thought of, especially with the drinks.

I received this cookbook through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an unbiased review. The presentation and layout of the book is beautiful. The recipes are mostly vegetarian, but there are also a few that are fish-based, and are mostly pretty basic/easy to prepare. The ingredients are wholesome and the recipes sound delicious. I have not yet had the opportunity to cook any of them since receiving the book, but I've marked several that I plan on making soon.
