But Amelia is hiding her own troubles, and it has something to do with her oh-so-perfect fiancé, Jake. This Christmas Eve, an unexpected visitor or two will make this a family reunion they will never forget. The author has some lovely turns of phrase, especially at the beginning of the book, but the version I read contains numerous editing errors. Alternating chapters are told from Amelia's and Jake's points-of-view, allowing us to see how Jake's plans for this Christmas get-together are wildly different from those of the Montgomerys. Some later chapters are told from Billy's point-of-view, which disrupts the structure of the story; this might have worked better if Billy's contributions were there from the beginning. Amelia goes by three different names (Amelia, Mel, and Amy) and - even though this illustrates how she is seen differently by Jake, her family, and Billy - it feels like an unnecessary gimmick in such a short book. These issues aside, the author skillfully creates a tense atmosphere, making us feel shut in and isolated, much like the Montgomerys. Again, like the family, you never know what's going to happen next. This is a suspenseful story that you are sure to want to read in one sitting. I received this book in return for an honest review. This book introduces you to Amelia Montgomery, driving home for Christmas after her breakup with Jake Grayson. With Winter Road, Kristina Rienzi has created a thrilling novella. Between 3 and 3.5 stars Upon starting this I was quickly annoyed. And stayed that way until about half way through. Jake just seemed like some weird ***** (insert word of choice there) that had a power hold on Amelia. I wanted more villainous not deranged exes. But he does get there a bit. Still, I would have liked darker. But this was only a novella so got to cut it some slack there as it can only be built up so much. My other issue was what was the deal between Amelia and Jake? I mean Jake mentions being together for years as he molded her yet she just now breaks up with him. And she seems well and truly done, even ready to move on to other guys. And is all knowing about his level of crazy anger. So what happened? Was she blind for years? Sounds like the rage was always there so I am confused here. Would have loved just 1-2 paragraphs covering that. I mean it gets repeat mentioned many times but never once explained. Decent read but nothing spectacular. I'd be curious to read a full length novel by the author though to see if there is a depth difference.

The idea of heading home for the holidays can bring stress and a need to drink, and Kristina Rienzi takes that to the max in her thriller, Winter Road. Too bad he has a dark side. Amelia’s loving family faces a nightmarish holiday when her fiancé, Jake, shows up uninvited. The character development is adequate given this is a short novella. The story premise is good, and the plot pace is great. The one downfall is the stiff dialogue. This dark thriller had my heart racing and my nails worried to the quick. Winter Road by Kristina Rienzi is the story of a domestic violence case gone wrong. Many other great stories come to mind, of burning beds, and tortured wives alongside this entry into a modern tradition of terror. This would be a darkly delightful read on a snowy night alongside the ghostly tales often reserved for the holidays. Following a bad breakup, Amelia Montgomery heads home for Christmas dinner, alone. Her family is unaware she has left her fiancé Jake Grayson, and it seems Jake will not let her go that easily either. A modern gothic tale in some ways, Kristina Rienzi’s novella contains the isolation and double meanings famed in that literary genre, yet updated by including a family who is present and supports our leading female. That is except for one terrifying man who has murder on his mind. Jake arrives uninvited after braving slippery roads and seething with revenge. Two problems hit Amelia full-force; her family does not know how dangerous Jake can be, and her former lover, Billy, has stopped by to spread holiday cheer and catch up on old times. If Jake was dangerous before, seeing his fiancé with another man fortifies his rage. The story takes place in an idyllic Currier and Yves version of a woman travelling home for the holidays. She is the very essence of a loving and warm woman, raised in the fresh air of the countryside and well-rounded after making a career for herself in the city. Jake, is quite the opposite and with more than a glint of the monied and slick psychopath. Two different versions of the north-west from New England calm, to big-city smooth. There is a sinking feeling through the first few chapters that the alcohol people are imbibing will not smooth the edges here. There seems to be a sinister tool at work here, as we have the distinct feeling that one of these characters may have drank their last. Amy, Amelia, Mel – all the men in her life, brother, boyfriend and fiancé have different feelings for the leading woman. She is strong and fixed in the reader’s mind as much of the story is told from her point of view, so hearing the others describe her back to us is fascinating. In no version is she weak, yet we see a softer side, the malleable side, the desired side; things that as a main protagonist she could not relay. This is done in very few, well-written words. While the final chapter rounds out the aftermath and takes the reader full circle, the story is truly found in the bitter cold of night, a gunshot breaking the silence, and a family looking on through terror and pain. This is where the four stars of five are found, and the weakness being in the passages of exposition in a story that otherwise does very well in showing us the monsters from the men. A classic tale of bravery in the face of fear.

We soon learn Amelia’s not the only one with troubles. Her brother Matt and his wife Kate are pregnant, but Kate has a history of having miscarriages. Amelia’s mother is fighting heart disease and her dad is embroiled with financial worries. Jake Grayson, plans on retrieving his property from Shady Knolls and return to New York with Amelia weather she wants it or not, even though the blizzard outside would deter any sane traveler. Regardless, Jake has a plan. Upon arrival at the Montgomery home he will execute Plan A, which consists of gifts, whiskey, and overnight attire. Plan B is a might more draconian: rope, handcuffs, drill, syringes, duct tape, and firearms. Billy Campbell, Amelia’s high school sweetheart, arrives at the Montgomery home to plow the driveway and gets invited for Christmas dinner. Jake doesn’t take kindly to Billy’s comfort around Jake’s turf and he decides the ex-boyfriend will be the first to go. Thus begins Winter Road: A Novella by Kristina Rienzi. The author tells her story through Amelia and Jake’s point of view. Billy’s viewpoint is added to the mix late in the book increasing reader confusion. Also adding to reader trepidation is the use of different names for the heroine: Amy, Mel, and Amelia. Winter Road is a high-octane roller coaster ride. It’s an exciting thriller where it’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen next. The only sure thing on the reader’s mind is that Jake is a psychopath and people will get killed if this man is not stopped. Rienzi’s Winter Road: A Novella is a 127 pages crime thriller that will keep readers riveted to the page from beginning to end.

Rienzi does an amazing job keeping the story engaging and her audience captivated throughout, always hinting at deeper connections than originally meets the eye.  I was able to finish this 137-page novella in just over an hour. To be fair, I may be a faster reader than most. However, it was easy and entertaining to the point where I didn't want to stop in the middle of the action--which was pretty much the entire book. This would be absolutely perfect as a plane/train ride read, or a nice vacation read. Or really, any small escape from reality.  The only things I wish could have been better was the characterization and believability. Not surprisingly in a novella, the characters did not grow much. They were a bit hard to care about, but the thrill aspect of the novel made up for it. The believability was a bit of an issue, as I had to completely remove myself from the story to suspend my belief enough to get into it. Events were just too coincidental and easy. It did not feel as if this could actually take place in my own world. However, again, this is perfect as a temporary escape from reality or a vacation/travel read, not something that I would dive into when looking for emotional transformation or a challenging of my perspectives. It was just a fun read. See this and other reviews at thebookdragondotblog.wordpress.com

This was a captivating read that kept me wanting more. The book quickly pulls you into the story, but I felt like I was dropped right into the start of the climax of the story. I needed to know the characters more to feel more empathy towards their situation. This was an enjoying read, but I wanted more plot and character development before the start of this book. This book is about a young woman who finds her fiancé is obsessive about her. He takes her family hostage on Christmas Eve. It is an easy read in one setting and contains no language or sex but does contain some violence. I would read another book by this author. In compliance with FTC guidelines, I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

We all deserve a do-over, right? And by the same token--we all could be fooled and then targeted by a complete psycho... This novella is a quick-bite thriller by a fab author that includes: a little bit of Christmas, a lot of action, a seriously twisted villain, a family in danger, and even a bit of second chance romance...
