'Predator' was a 3 1/2 star read for me. It was intense at times, but dragged along for long stretches as well. As my first read by this author, it was good. I will probably read more from her in the future. That being said, the book wasn't exactly what I'd expected after reading the blurb. It still ended up being good, just not the type of story I had expected. Predator, aka Damian, was nothing but nice to Cara right from the start. As my first read by this author, it was good. I will probably read more from her in the future. That being said, the book wasn't exactly what I'd expected after reading the blurb. It still ended up being good, just not the type of story I had expected. Predator, aka Damian, was nothing but nice to Cara right from the start. I had kind of expected some sort of abuse/captivity situation between Damian and Cara, but that didn't happen. Cara is a captive, after she's kidnapped by men trying to flush out her uncle. She'd been on the run since she was a teenager, without really knowing why she was being hunted. She only knew that her parents were murdered and that her uncle gave her money, a new identity, and told her to run for her life. When her, or rather her parents', past finally catches up to her, she is defenseless. Damian is hired to find and rescue kidnapping victims. He saves Cara from her captors and kills them. Afterward, he takes her to live with him. From this point forward, the story catalogues Cara's struggles to overcome the trauma that she experienced. Before Damian reached her, she had been beaten severely and brutally raped. Each day is a challenge, with even the most mundane tasks seeming daunting. While Cara tries to maintain a grasp on her sanity, Damian is fighting his own internal battles. Guilt plagues him. He always seems to be too late when it really counts. He's been too late to save the one he loved in the past and he doesn't intend to let Cara slip away. There is definitely a slow build-up between these two. Given Cara's recent trauma, a sexual relationship is the last thing on her mind for quite some time. She has a lot of raw, painful emotions to work through. Although Damian came across as cold and distant at first, he was the type of character that grows on you. It became apparent that his actions were to protect Cara. It was also obvious that he cared for her in his own way. Yet, just as these two are starting to figure things out, everything hits the fan. Damian must tell Cara the truth of how he came to cross paths with her. He knows that it might crush her, but he owes her the truth. While I appreciated the unconventional storyline of this book, I spent a lot of time waiting for something to happen. There was too much downtime for me between memorable events. I understand that the author wanted to stress that Cara's recovery was slow and painful. However, that sentiment was reflected in the reading experience. So much of this book was just depressing and slow-moving. Part of me wants to applaud the author for trying to present an realistic portrayal of emotional and mental status post-rape. However, the other part of me has to acknowledge that this did take away from the story for me. I felt that it could have been done with fewer pages. There wasn't a need to continue to pound it home. We got it. She was completely screwed up! As a whole, this was a good story. Some parts were just "okay" for me, but most of it was good. This isn't a fast-paced book, but it wasn't the slowest-moving either. I did find myself getting distracted a few times while reading, but that was probably more of a reflection of my schedule this week than of the writing. If you're a Kindle Unlimited member, this title is worth a shot.

Michelle writes dark and twisty incredibly well. Her ability to suck readers into the dark while filling them with light and hope is second to none. In fact I'd say this is by far Michelle's best work to date. From the Prologue I was hooked, pulled so deep into the shock and suspense of the story that my heart was almost beating from my chest, my jaw had dropped and breath stopped. Michelle's description of her characters and their surroundings was outstanding. I was able to feel as though I was right there watching the horrors unfold and feel the pain and disgust oozing from Cara. I honestly don't think Predator (Damien) could have been any better written. His cold, unloving demeanour at first suited him perfectly for the angle of the story. What Michelle did with his character through out the book was wonderful. Predator breathed again, felt life and while reading I saw that develop really well. The two as a couple are beautiful. Two damaged, broken souls who find life in one another. Who find solace and happiness with each other. Michelle makes her characters strong when they should be weak, she gives them hope when there is so much dark, she shows them bravery when there is so much fear. And she shines the light and leads them to their paths perfectly. This whole book, is truly wonderful. Heartbreak turns into blissful fullness and tears turn into smiles. And above all else hope fights it's way throughout, wins and shows anyone that they can make it.

I saw this book while browsing around Kindle Unlimited, and it seemed like the perfect read for my mood. Michelle Horst is also a new author to me so it was the perfect time to discover a new writer, which I love to do. But with that aside, I liked how haunting this story was at times and it really kept me captivated. I may not have always understood exactly why the characters were doing whatever it was they were doing, but that was just another reason I was on the edge of my seat. I never knew what was coming next, yet had a strong need to keep reading so I could find out. Bottom line, not a favorite of mine, but still a book I would recommend.

3 Stars Overall Opinion: This kept me intruiged, but it's not going down on my favorites shelf. I got a little bored at the beginning and ended up skimming to try to find the good parts. Luckily that did happen, and I became more engaged. For a book with a title "predator" I was kind of surprised that it wasn't that dark of a read tbh. Don't get me wrong -- it did have some horrible events that makes it lean towards the dark side, but the H wasn't a dark guy. He killed people, yes. But he was more of a vigilante type than just a bad guy. I also had some issues with the fact that he lost his first love and this is why he ended up doing what he did. I wouldn't say that I felt like the h was second best, but I got a little tired of hearing about the dead girlfriend. I know this will irritate a lot of my safety gals too. Overall, it was just ok for me. Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Cara and Damien's story. Cara's parents are murdered, and she is put on the run by her uncle for 7 years to avoid the people that killed them. Damien is a "cleaner" and he cleans up people's messes. Cara is a mess Damien is hired to handle. He saves her from some men that had kidnapped her and helps her heal. They form a bond and eventually that bond turns into more. There are some action packed and suspenseful moments, some sexy times, and some sad moments...and they get a HEA ending. POV: This alternated between Cara and Damien's POV. Overall Pace of Story: Ok. I thought it was a slow start, because I skimmed some at the beginning. Otherwise, I thought it flowed well. Instalove: No. They take a while to develop stronger feelings. H rating: 3.5 stars. Damien. There were some instances that I wanted to shake him, but for the most part I liked him. h rating: 3.5 stars. Cara. I liked her, but sometimes she seemed a little immature. I really did appreciate her strength after what she endured. Sadness level: Low/moderate. This covers some heavy themes, but I never needed any tissues. Push/Pull: Not really Heat level: Moderate/low. They take a good while to become intimate (for obvious reasons), but once they do they have some hot chemistry. Descriptive sex: Yes Safe sex: Yes. Condoms are used until h starts birth control. No mention of past practices. (view spoiler)[The men that raped the h didn't use protection, and she ended up pregnant (lost the baby later) (hide spoiler)] OW/OM drama: Yes(view spoiler)[There is an OW (that the H had a sexual past with) that needs his protection and moves into the house with them. The H doesn't see that the OW is trying to get with him. She says some passive aggressive things to the h, but there is nothing but friendship going on between her and the H from the H's perspective. Once the H realizes what's going on (and the h runs away) he kicks the OW out. (hide spoiler)] Sex scene with OW or OM: Not really (view spoiler)[There is a scene of the h getting raped that is descriptive (hide spoiler)] Cheating: No Separation: Yes(view spoiler)[ The h runs away from the H and they are separated for 2 months. No mention of other partners during separation. (hide spoiler)] Possible Triggers: Yes(view spoiler)[ The h's parents are killed, she's on the run, she's kidnapped, beaten, raped, a surprise pregnancy, loss of baby, dead partner, and an 11 year age difference between the h (25) and H (36) (hide spoiler)] Closure: This actually had a pretty feel good ending that I was happy with. They got a HEA IMO. How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription. Safety: Safe with exception/Not safe -- dependent to personal triggers (view spoiler)[ - Does Not have cheating - Does Not have a descriptive sex scene with OW/OM - Does have the h pushing the H away because of trauma - Does have a ~2 month separation between the h and H - Does have abuse (physical and sexual before H saves her) - Does Not have OTT sad parts IMO (view spoiler)[ some might consider the loss of her baby an OTT sad part (hide spoiler)] - Does have a HEA ending. (hide spoiler)]

This book was truly something else, cried through most of it and at times I wanted to stop reading but I pulled through. I admired the writing as I easily connected to the characters & it was so sad to see them go through what they did, especially the heroine. Overall, it is a great book. TITLE: Predator AUTHOR: Michelle Horst GENRE: Contemporary Romance RELEASE DATE: April 29th , 2016 MY RATING what do you do when 5 stars just isn't enough?? You shove it on your favorite bookshelf!! To say I loved this book is an understatement, I can't even pinpoint at what stage I fell in love with this book, I was just drawn into the story-line as soon as I started it and it didn't let me out of it's grip until that very last page..This story just wowed me, gave me enough dark and grit then the feels started rushing at me on speed.. If you've read and loved anything by this author previously you should know by now that she doesn't disappoint, she uncannily pushes us into the darkness book by book and I have no doubt that this book won't be any different.. That synopsis had me chasing this book down on my knees begging for an arc copy of this!! PREDATOR The opening Prologue gave me goosebumps and definitely piqued my interest, eighteen year old Cara is the soul survivor of a boating incident, which subsequently took the lives of her parents leaving her frightened and alone in the world. She wakes up in a hospital and is handed an envelope by her Uncle which holds a passport under a new identity, he urges her to run, to leave South Africa and never look back!! You can't stay here! Once you're in America, stick to the small towns and never use your name again. Forget where you come from, of they will find you. Run, Cara. Run far away and never stop! After that intense debilitating Prologue we're now Seven Years Later Cara is still on the run, moving swiftly from town to town, a lonely existence, taking on menial jobs just for survival, not making any intimate connections for fear of getting caught. When you're on the run, getting attached is like carrying a dead weight around your neck. Abducted, held hostage Terrified, questions screaming through her mind at an alarming speed Where am I? How did they find me? Are they going to kill me? Panic fear Anger Rescued I don't think there will ever come a time that I'll trust another human being or feel safe again. Predator is an intense and intricate novel that had my heart racing a million miles an hour in anticipation of what "Michelle Horst" was going to throw at me next, page by page you are woven into a story of unbelievable proportions as you feel/connect with what Cara endures at the hands of madmen intent on making her pay for the sins of her father. Predator is spoken in dual POV's Predator (her protector/her savior) and Cara (the girl who must walk within the shadows). When we're first introduced to predator, he's a robotic cold shell of a man, he goes in rescues the target and gets back out again and hands that job as he calls the target over to the person who orchestrated the rescue, it's not until you delve deeper into the book that you are privy to another side of him. "I see the most beautiful fucked up woman in front of me and she's perfect. you're so beautifully broken it makes me want to keep you." MY THOUGHTS You know when you come across a book and you just want to savor it, breathe it in, take your time and slow down your reading so that book never ends, where you wish you were an author where you could convey exactly those emotions that race through your blood stream whilst your reading that book, this book is that book, a book where I don't look at the time and think one more chapter and I'll go and do this or that, this book like a fine wine is to be enjoyed, sip by sip in no hurry to finish it, page by page reading at snails pace so I don't reach the end of the page and have to say goodbye to these characters, this book, this author has ruined me, she embodies everything i love about reading, the dark, the grit, those boxes are ticked for me!!

Cara is orphaned and ever since then she has been on the run. She knows her parents were killed and she has to hide to protective herself. The book starts out with a bang and instantly I was interested in Cara’s story. Why were her parents killed? Who is after her? It’s years later she becomes careless and gets kidnapped. No, this isn’t your typical kidnapping book. The kidnapping part of the book is pretty short, but it’s the darkest part of the book. I found this the MOST interesting part of the book because like I said, I’m a dark junkie. You really feel for Cara and wonder what kind of person she will become if she ever gets out of it. Damien is the man that comes for Cara. Damien is a killer. He gets hired for jobs and he leaves emotions at the door. I really liked Damien because I found him a bit mysterious and a bit harsh on Cara. He tells her she can’t cry or vomit because he doesn’t have time for that. There is nothing sexier than a Hero being harsh to the Heroine but that is me. I found the chemistry between Damien and Cara a bit lacking at times and wished there was more character development. I felt like this book could have been easily a five star read if it was tweaked a bit. I love a fast pace novel, but I wanted more connection. Cara runs away a lot too. I think if I played a drinking game for every time Cara runs away I would be passed out drunk or dead. I was starting to roll my eyes every time she gets a panic attack. I get she’s upset, but I wished she did something else instead of running away. Also the book isn’t really steamy, I’m not saying I need sex in every book, but I felt like the sexual tension was lacking. I really wanted some pent up sexual tension between the two and I just didn’t get it. Overall, I liked the concept and idea of the book. I read it fairly quickly and I wouldn’t write the author off. Maybe the next book she writes will be really dark and blow me away.

I read the blurb, I'm familiar with the author, and so I dove right in. I expected lots of darkness and depravity and, in the beginning, the author did not disappoint. It was graphic and disgusting, turning my stomach and keeping me glued to the pages. But then the intensity kind of fell off and I was left with a story that had more of a contemporary feel than a suspenseful one. So let's recap the story... Girl is out with her parents on a beautiful day, appreciating time spent with her family, and then everything turns scary. She winds up in the hospital, learns her parents are dead, her uncle gives her fake papers and sends her out of the country. She only knows that someone is after her, but not why. Seven years go by with her moving from small town to small town, without forming any attachments, and she starts feeling the itch to move again. Too late, she's captured and tortured and about to die when she's saved. Predator comes through, rescues the girl, kills her captors, and takes her to safety. Trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys isn't easy when the girl is traumatized and scared, but he's unwilling to let her go. While not really romantic, this story was still entertaining. I've tried and tried and tried this author and I don't have any plans of giving up. Her work always has a note that draws me in and I'm sure that won't stop any time soon. So while this particular story didn't completely blow me away, I'll patiently wait for the one that will.

Dark, disturbing and oh, so good… Once in a while a book comes along and just messes with my head. THIS is one of those books! 3.75 "I live you" stars Since i have read book 2 / Protector, first and loved it, Predator now seems like a fading copy... it s like the same pattern of the storyline with changed details but even though i liked the characters in Predator-Damian/Sam/Alex and Cara/Karen/Nina, they don't hold a match for the characters I LOVED in Protector, but that s only my humble opinion and affection pouring out. But since this is Cara and Damian's story, i need to be honest and give them enough attention as they rightfully deserve. Cara survived a horrible boat accident at 18 years old, leaving her alone without parents, with only her uncle who made sure she escaped South Africa, with a new identity, without explaining her the reasons why. She's been living under her mother's name Cassy Smith for seven years, moving around, changing jobs and motels, never staying anywhere for longer than a few months, until she slipped. She lost guard and got herself caught and held captive, beaten and sexually violated until she no longer knew of her own posture...and still not knowing who took her or why. Then when all of her hopes of rescuing were shattered and disperesed a man called Predator, came for her. "You're safe. I have you now." And the story of healing, revolving, evolving and growing into this man, finding the reason to hold on to, yet through his trying to make her independant of him Shit happens to the best of us...it's how you deal with it that counts. You're gotta fight for what you want, otherwise this life will chew you the fuck up and spit you right out. You're either a fighter or a nobody... only backfires on himself as his own past shadows come to visit and he realizes Cara is not just another job, All the rules I've lived by fly right out the window. None of them work for Cara. She's not just another package. I don't know what she is but she's not a job anymore. There's no going back. Me and all my rules, and I was the one who broke them all. she's way much more... I see the most beautiful fucked up woman in front of me and she's perfect. You're so beautifully broken and it makes me want to keep you. even if he's reluctant to admit it...at first, but he'll never stop protecting her, keeping her safe until all the loose ends are no longer existing. "I risked my life twice for you, Cara. I'll keep risking my life until I die, if it means I can keep you safe, because you are priceless. The man holding me is everything but sweet. He's exactly what the ink on his skin represents. He's predatory. He's dangerous. He's mine. Even if they are headed towards their HEA, it's a long way further for Cara to get rid of the memories that scarred her and he's the only man that can give her new memories and not just new identity...as their journey is unique by the grasp of it, the emotions they feel are no longer subdued to labels...it's more than themselves...and they LIVE it. "Love is too much like hate. They are emotions that come and go. Life, that's a different ball game. You get one life. I live you, Cara. You're my life." This is my second book by Michelle Horst and even though i already knew what to expect to find in her books, since previously read Protector, this story was also intense, it dealt with tormentuous, violent issues, then there was a period of facing and dealing with it while the person tries to heal and move on in a way, those were the things I learned to appreciate in Michelle's books, and yet I found it a bit less lovable than the second book. At times i felt it was too slow for the intensity that wanted to deliver and then there were times that delivered just the opposite, when i needed it to be slow to intensify the motion, it was made in away that didn't leave me fully appreciative of the notion it was supposed to give me. But nevermind my "personal affiliation", this is still a story worth of mention, worth of your attention with meaningful insights on life, pain, death as much as it has on light, LOVE and most of all HOPE. Cara Ellison's life took a drastic turn when her family was killed in a boat accident and she was told to flee the country to USA to avoid being kill by the enemy. After living alone and skipping town after town for seven years, her luck is running out and she is finally being caught. Predator aka Damian is a cleaner and was hired to retrieve Cara. The last thing he needs is to form any attachment to his job, but he decided that he can't return Cara to her rightful place. What Cara went through is sympathetic, especially when she was captured and abused before being saved by Damian. I don't mind to read Damsel in distress and a woman who is in need of healing. But I find it hard to admire a heroine who spent almost the entire book breaking down in tears. Even until 90%, this woman can still find the will to cry. As for the hero Damian, I think he was pretty selfless and admirable, though I did find his reason to keep and take care of Cara not that convincing. Also I don't feel like the Damian had enough of page time being a Predator. The only time he looks absolutely kickass and badass was when he went to rescue Cara. I miss seeing him in action. I rather read about him killing villains than to read about Cara having a pity party. One problem that I experienced while read Michelle Horst's other books is her tendency to use to numerous exclamation marks (!). I feel slightly annoyed by it as if the characters are constantly shouting or mentally freaking out all the time. Overall, I feel that this book lack the suspense to match the overall tone of the story. Too much focus on the heroine's problem and healing and lack of the hero being in action. For a dark romance to work, I need actual romance happening at least by 50% mark. No point beating around the bush, having all the push and pull until towards the end. It just makes me running out of patience for these two.

I read only a small part of the book to be honest and that's because I couldn't go further. Yes the book does warn it contains 'dark themes', but damn it, my freaking house lost its electricity by all this darkness in it lol. When the whole nastyness ends and the 'hero' comes in the scene to save her, I felt some relief and tried reading it further just to give it one more chance. But even after the whole torture, I couldn't keep reading about the young battered and overly raped girl who couldn't even walk straight and even had this way too cold and feelingless dude telling her that she needs to take a freaking bath quickly and even demanding that she cleans up her wounds (we're talking about burns, scratches, beatings, bleeding,etc..wounds), quickly and efficiently so they'd get back on the 'move'. It was too much. Even for a book it was too surreal. You don't treat someone who's been nearly to death after such torture like that, you don't expect someone to just go and rub those wounds off of her fast and furiously as if nothing has happened and no I can't take the details or description of her torture well either. I'm much upset, much disappoint..lol. Anyways the book was not for me, maybe others have a stronger stomach for this kind of thing but for me it's too nasty and painful to even read. K..bye now.

3.5 This book wasn't what I expected. With a title like Predator and the somewhat vague synopsis, I expected a more suspenseful/thriller/dark romance type read. Predator was more of a Prince Charming. In my opinion, the book focused more on the healing of the heroine and the relationship building between the hero and the heroine. There was low angst and quick resolution of anything that was outside of the relationship building. I couldn't connect with the characters and I really couldn't understand their relationship all through the book. It was just a dull romance novel with some steamy scenes (and those scenes were nearly at the end of the book) I couldnt belive my eyes when I read the Line H says 'I fuck hard and fast' to our h (who had kidnapped and raped and beaten just months ago) Sorry this book didn't work for me. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. DNF at 75%. I really gave it the old try. The beginning was gripping, if far-fetched,but the further I got, the more plot holes I fell in. Most importantly, I ceased to believe in the characters. H is a professional "cleaner." He cleans up the messes other people make. With his gun. He retrieves h from a bunch of mafia types who have subjected her to torture including rape. He kills the nine men single-handedly by walking into their house, with the traumatized h in tow, and with his one gun to their nine. Ooooooookay. H is going to rehabilitate h on his own so she can get past her trauma and resume living, this time armed with more survival skills that will prevent her from getting caught in this mafia vendetta again. However, knowing she was raped, he neither a)gets her medical attention or counseling b)gets her tested for STDs or c)gets her a pregnancy test. Now I am not a professional hit man/retriever but wouldn't plain common sense dictate he or she would think about some of these issues? Because neither of them does, and she ends up pregnant from the gang rape. Unbeknownst to either of them His idea of rehab is to get this PTSD survivor to act as his assistant and help with the rescuing of another kidnap victim, basically causing her to re-live her nightmare. He also drops her off at the mall to fend for herself, takes her out to a bar, where she collapses in the bathroom, and finally, drives her to run away by moving in his friends with benefits inside his house. Ooooooooooookay. Still not giving up. h runs away and gets picked up by a total stranger who turns out to be her fairy godmother. Well not quite but the character of the older woman who takes her in at her isolated farm and within minutes starts treating her like a daughter might as well bibiddy-bobiddy-booed her into a magical ball gown and glass slippers. Of course the bad guys catch up to her and proceed to shoot her in the stomach, causing her to lose her baby. I honestly gave up at that point but I still pushed myself to read a bit more to see if I could avoid another DNF since this is a short read. But I just couldn't. My problem is not that it dealt with dark issues, it was that it dealt with them in a trite, implausible manner, to move along a plot with more holes than Swiss cheese. It wasn't silly like those OTT pulp fiction dime novels, and it did not have the required character development, sensitivity, and authenticity to pull off an effective dark story.

Why leading her on? Even the h asked him this. His answer was ridiculous and induced major eye-roll. Nothing happens with the OW, but I wish he ignored her or keep his distance. You know!? (view spoiler)[Being pregnant with the rapist's child. The unborn child dies when the h was shot in the lower abdomen. (hide spoiler)] This is a hard limit for me and it depends on the author how she/he presents that. Let's just say it didn't work for me in this presentation. I just want to live in my happy bubble where all the children are concieved in love and happiness. I live you instead of I love you. It loved it in Hopeless, but now it feels unoriginal. The h and H having a monologue. Not an inner one. Full out loud talking with themselves. I talk to myself out loud on a daily basis. But this was just weird. I can't explain. The epilogue was sweet. I'm conflicted about this book. Did it work for me? Did I like the MCs? The plot? I'm not sure, sometimes I did but then I didn't, thus 3*. You might like it, who knows!?

So it seems like Horst writes some pretty dark stuff; I think one of her other books deal with sexual slavery/trafficking, and this one definitely had some brutal, sexually violent scenes that are definitely intended for mature readers. So, please be warned -- some readers may find the content extremely disturbing and offensive. Unlike me. Because for me, it had the opposite effect. I wasn't offended at all, and if anything, I was disappointed that this book wasn't as "dark" as it claimed to be. I wasn't offended at all, and if anything, I was disappointed that this book wasn't as "dark" as it claimed to be. (Especially considering the title.) Without revealing too much, this story is clearly a love story with a few extra trimmings, sprinkled on very lightly for decor -- or maybe for a little bit of spice. Unfortunately, if you're going to write about rape and kidnapping and death and torture, then please don't make that the back-story! A love story thrown into the mix can be interesting, but it has to be believable, if nothing else. The one thing that I did appreciate, was that there was NO instalove. If there was, I would have stopped reading right then and there. Instead, it was a twisted, sloppy version of Stokholme Syndrome Part II with Cara and the "Predator." I appreciated Cara's strength and will to live, but she was really meek and her character was kind of a pushover (mostly). Her attachment to the "Predator" (I'll stick with that name, because he ends up with a lot of different names later on), was understandable and slightly believable (under the circumstances), but I didn't get Predator's attachment to her. It wasn't his first rescue. It wasn't like it was the first time he had to take care of a broken girl -- kidnapped and violated. What was it that made her different? Horst gives semi-believable explanations, but none were good enough to justify the CHEESY as HELL ending this story had. Also, how cliche is it to have yet another Damsel in Distress with her Dark Prince Charming/Hero there to rescue her AND sweep her off her feet? I don't know. I'm conflicted with this book. I was engaged throughout the book; there never really was a dull moment. There was a lot of action, and a lot of *dark* and sometimes unnecessary, unspeakable horrors happened upon Cara -- who kept trudging on, despite the shitty hand life kept dealing her. You're going from one page to the next, thinking, no freaking way. Un-freaking-believable." You're half hoping things get better for her, while the other half is curious what horror would happen next. So, there was that. But then the whole romance thing starts slowly churning.... There are small, subtle, but powerful hints and reminders that Cara and her Predator may get their very own happy ending. I was OK with that, until the reminders weren't subtle anymore, and things started happening. And FAST. It was a very slow-build, which ricocheted into something very cheesy, predictable, and bland. There's definitely sexual content here - and a lot of it. Some are disturbing, some sexy. Predator is really "perfect" boyfriend material (minus the fact that he's a killer), and Cara's just the perfect mix of broken, yet vulnerable. HORST really knows how to build likable characters, and I did like them. I did root for them. I just didn't LOVE them. If HORST took that extra step and really made Cara unlovable, and Predator live up to his name... then who knows what we would've gotten? Maybe not the fairy-tale love story, story book ending, but something else entirely. Characters that I maybe could've loved. This book will definitely keep you entertained, but don't expect a truly dark and disturbing read.

Do you give up or do you keep fighting? Everyone has has a reason to give a book a 5 star rating. For me its because I was held captive from start to finish with Mchelle Horst's writing voice and the flow of her writing. This is a stand alone romantic suspense that kept me on my seat right to the last page. Be aware that there are scenes in this story that are teeth gripping and for some readers it will push their comfort zone. I felt strongly for what Cara Ellison suffered. It was upsetting and at times hard to read but she was a strong character and I loved that about her. I also loved the Predator - he was a hero in my books.

Knowing that the people who killed her parents are after her too. Yep...she is living in the dark. But it is about to get darker. Much darker. My mind is quiet for the first time, as if it's switched off. Cara tries to lose herself in small towns and cheap hotels. But she doesn't hide well enough or long enough. Then the darkness surrounds her. It feels like my soul weighs a ton, dragging me under the wave of emptiness that keeps crashing over me. Damien is a predator. A finder. A cleaner. He gets in quickly. Finishes his job quickly. Gets out quickly. No attachments. No long term commitment. To anything or anyone. When he finds Cara, he knows this is different. She is different. She has been in the dark so long, she will need guidance back to the light. I feel small in his arms. He's so much bigger than me, but I feel small because there's nothing left of the person I once was. Damien and Cara hide. From the world. From each other. From themselves. They are both so conditioned that they have little hope of changing the way they think or act. And life keeps reinforcing that. I'm so tired of never getting to say goodbye to people. They always just fade into my past. Ms Horst has given us a delightfully dark read. One that gives you glimmers of hope just to pull it back. And like Charlie Brown we keep running toward the light. Hoping that this time it will be different. Hoping that Cara and Damien won't be swallowed by the dark again. I'm too alive for all the pain inside of me. It gives the pain something to feed on, something to destroy. This is a dark read. One that will knock you down again and again. And yet, you keep reading because it is so well written. So heartbreaking. So hopeful.

Fear turns people into monsters and every sound into a warning of what may come.” Clara is on the run after her parents are murdered. 7 years later, the past of her father finally catches up to her. She is kidnapped, placed in a shipping container and is brutalized. The day she is supposed to be killed, a predator saves her. From there she is on an uphill battle of building what was stripped from her. Despite her efforts to reclaim what was savagely taken from her, more events happen that continue to beat her down. ”Jealousy doesn’t make you nasty. It makes you a fucking actor. It eats away at you until there’s nothing left of the person you used to be.” Clara slowly builds a safe haven within the predator’s confines, until one day the walls of that safe harbor are stripped from her. Jealousy makes a decision on her behalf, and in the middle of the night she leaves, only to be faced with more unfortunate events. Clara says it all with: ”Fuck my life.”

Solid 4 stars! This was actually a very depressing story, however, I don't feel depressed or miserable. To be honest, the heroine was deeply depressed and psychologically damaged for most of the story (and for a darn good reason, too!!), yet I still feel kinda hopeful after finishing this book. Predator, which is a bit silly title as his name is Damian and he's is never actually referred to as Predator, is hired to extract Cara from captivity where she has been severely brutalized and abused. Predator, which is a bit silly title as his name is Damian and he's is never actually referred to as Predator, is hired to extract Cara from captivity where she has been severely brutalized and abused. There are some graphic scenes. He is adamant that she not become attached to him, but perhaps the problem is more his attachment to her? I was a bit surprised that the storyline mostly focused on Cara's road to recovery with the help of Damian (although his methods were a bit questionable at times) than on the mystery surrounding her parent's death and the threat on her life. However I didn't mind much. I would have wished for a bit more action (I mean, it's called Predator. So is some badass one-man-army action or at least an explosion or two too much to ask for?), but what we got satisfied my romance hungering self! I really enjoyed the slow burn between the MCs and I fell more and more for Damian. His POV was necessary, as some of his actions left me puzzled, but getting to know his reasoning only endeared me to him. The ending was a bit rushed and a quite anticlimactic.. I definitely feel an epilogue was in order! This was my first read by this author, but it won't be my last!

I love this book. Minus one star because somewhere in the middle it was a bit out of place, heroine jealous of Hero when most of the time she doesn't give a damn f and Damien somehow didn't appear as deadly as I thought he would be (still good tho). The beginning of the story gripped my heart like no other as whatever happened to heroine was too graphic. Then again, it gives me depth of how messed up in the head she is and reason why she's in her own world most of the time. Damien, by far, the mos I love this book. He's calculated, dangerous, hard and it took me by surprise how he handled the situation unlike any other protector-heroes (sweet and hard at the same time? COUNT ME THE F IN!). He's not a cocky/heartless Hero given his profession so that's ALWAYS REFRESHING! Especially the part where he brought her necessities and that will always be my favorite part. He's so attentive and caring ❤️ The relationship of these two and ending killed me ahhh love it need more❤️❤️❤️
