Gastown was the first significant community in Vancouver, named as such because of Captain Jack Deighton, nicknamed 'gassy jack' because of his talking, who set up the first saloon. Vancouver was initially a mill town and only came to prominence due to the Western terminus of the trans Canadian railway being located there Not a literary masterpiece, but an interesting history of Vancouver.
