The premise of this series is very cool. It’s like a new twist on the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (or even the Justice League), but with more unique, and urban fantasy-type characters. So, despite the fact that the first book never really sucked me in, I went on to Furies because the potential was so high. I have read many books over the years written by two (or more) authors. Most of the time, I don’t notice. Regrettably, it is very noticeable with this series. At the beginning, the team splits: three go to Greece to investigate mysterious murders and four go (eventually) to the Underworld. I can’t help but think the two writers each handled one segment – and it was like reading two different books. This issue was exacerbated when it came to character development – they are all one dimensional because there is no connection between them, or the two lines of the plot. The hobgoblin, Squire, can travel through shadows. I know because EVERY SINGLE TIME the story switched back to him readers were again told that he travels through shadows (this after being told every time in book one). It's like the author has to remind you after you come back from reading that other book! But, that’s all the info we really get about him. Eve, the ultimate sinner, is a vampire with a refined taste in fashion. But, how did she come to be with the Menagerie and why? With such an unusual and eccentric bunch of characters, that it is implied have been together for a long time, I expected more camaraderie – or at least familial nitpicking – and some sharp, funny, emotional dialog. That is completely lacking. They are like strangers to one another. I did like that these novels incorporate so much historical into the fantastical, and that the various mythologies and religions all exist and have unforeseen repercussions. The overarching plot with the DemoGorgon and Sweetblood is tantalizing while still allowing each book to have closure. In short, all the ingredients are here for the perfect recipe of urban fantasy. But, in this case, too many cooks are spoiling the pot.

The second installment of the series takes us to Athens, where the menagerie is investigating why men and women are turned into stone. One of the things I really like about this series is how the authors take classic myths and they put a different spin on them. I won't go into too much detail because I don't want to spoil the story, but I can say that this installment introduces us to the queen of the Gorgons, and that during the course of the story the team makes a foray into hell. Interesting plot, good cast of characters, fast paced story - a good choice overall.

The Menagerie is a very pleasing series of collaborative urban fantasy novels by Thomas E. Sniegoski and Christopher Golden. They books feature a large and diverse cast of characters such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Eve (yes, -that- Eve!), and influences ranging from Lovecraft and Alan Moore to traditional ghost and Fae folklore and all manner of mythology. It's like The Avengers and a Justice team got together in a cool prose situation, with great McGrath covers. Each volume tells a self-contained story as well as building upon the previous ones; unfortunately a huge threat is slowly revealed to be getting closer and closer... but only four novels appeared, leaving an annoying cliff-hanger. Nonetheless, they're all a lot of well-written fun.

This book is a fun, pulpy, dark superhero tale with a lot of mythology, gothic sensibilities, clever characters and action. I felt like I was reading a great comic series. My personal favorite character is the Hobgoblin, Squire who can 'teleport' by walking through shadows. I will definitely be reading the three other novels in this series. Not recommended for people who don't appreciate a pulpy adventure, but better than most of the like out there. Another great book and a good follow up to The Nimble Man, it continues the development of the characters and their interrelationships. You learn more about an excellent group of historical individuals, once again saving the world.

Another exquisite tale with our beloved Menagerie! I loved watching the growth of Danny, the demon changeling, the bond between Clay and Eve, and the rekindling between Conan Doyle and Ceridwen. I look forward to the next adventure!
