This book reflects my longstanding interest in idioms and other expressions referring to body parts, and it ‘connects’ anatomy with the spoken and written language.” This book was written for three main reasons. First, anatomy matters, particularly in surgery. During the last several years, collecting such expressions became a hobby for the author. Second, as someone moving to this country from another part of the world, Dr. Hasselgren is interested in the peculiarities of the American language. Idioms, slang, and other expressions are specific for any given language and quite often cannot be directly translated. Third, when one starts to be aware of them, written and spoken body language can become quite entertaining. About the Author: Per-Olof Hasselgren, M.D., Ph.D., is the George H.A. He is director of endocrine surgery and vice chairman of research in the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School. The author who received his medical education in Sweden has been a surgeon in the U.S. for more than thirty years. This was one of the main reasons he decided to embark on such unusual writing journey - his big interest in specialties of American language. Collecting expressions and idioms that are related to body parts is Per-Olof Hasselgren’s hobby for last couple of years, because, as we all know, the peculiarities of particular language usually cannot be directly translated making them even more interesting for person who is not native speaker. I would say Per-Olof Hasselgren is not kind of man you would imagine writing this kind of book - M.D., Ph.D., George H.A. Clowes Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Director of Endocrine Surgery and Vice Chairman of Research in the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard Medical School. But due to that reason his book is even more interesting – combining his medical know-how and obvious literary talent, Per-Olof Hasselgren created book full of knowledge, in same time humorous, accessible and easy to read. And this is certainly reason I could recommend this book though it is not anymore on my shelf – I already borrowed it to my friend who was curios about it because of my retelling. I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions.

As a big fan of fun facts and figures books, I was delighted to receive a review copy of this book from Goodreads Giveaways. It has added charms all along the way of famous figures' quotes and inspirational speech about all parts of the human body. I learnt a lot more origins of phrases through reading this. This book all the way through is fascinating and I'm sure I will be going back to it time after time to discover more - definitely one for your reference shelves or just to have a quick dip into to raise a quick smile.
