It is written in an easy, understandable style that will work for beginners in social media as well as those who’ve gained some knowledge but still haven’t dipped their toes in. Her information is reliable and based on solid marketing information. Chris Syme outlines her suggested plan using SMART, an acronym. Smart Media is Sustainable, Manageable, Author-specific, Relevant, and recommends Tactics Last. After explaining what SMART media is, in clear and understandable detail, she then details some of the unnamed basics of the SMART marketing plan. She even offers a variety of resources that authors can count on for relevant information on their way to using social media to market their books. Social Media is a means for authors to communicate with the intended audience of their book, and with easy-to-follow recommendations, Syme explains clearly how to do just that. She first explains each step of what SMART media is, then offers ways to implement them. Syme even includes a brief list of what to do to get started. Review: I like that Chris Syme takes the time to explain that this plan needs to be tailored to each person’s own book. What works for others will not necessarily work for everyone. The short list of very helpful steps to take toward each part of the plan she describes, recommending authors use a journal to keep track of what they are learning, what they see, and what parts of the plan they intend to implement. With key questions at the end of each chapter, she asks authors to look closely at themselves to hone their focus. I found the recommendations about the amount of time to spend on social media very helpful, as well as well as the inexpensive and handy tools (computer programs and websites) she uses to make the job easier. And I’m sure a lot of beginners to social media will appreciate her descriptions of how to use each channel of social media correctly. Another concept I found useful were bucket lists. These involve what your audience and fans want and need, and what you can do to provide it for them. It’s a great way to get a handle on how to meet the needs of your audience, which is all an important part of what working with social media is. I highly recommend this book to any author who hasn’t been using social media to sell their books, or those who aren’t sure they’re using it to full benefit. It’s a great book with great suggestions and enough details that you’ll fully understand what you’re doing, and why. Why listen to Chris Syme? She’s very well qualified to offer these suggestions on how to market books. She owns her own marketing and communications consulting firm, using a variety of marketing services geared specifically toward authors and publishers. She also has several other books offering training in other areas of social media. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. SMART Social Media for Authors is one of those rare books that is a valuable resource for both novice and experienced marketers alike. The first half is the basics of marketing and social media and the second half gets into the nitty gritty of campaigns. If are new to social media, this guide is MUST. It’s more than just a social media guide; it’s a primer on marketing in general, with tons of good advice. Syme clearly knows her subject matter and is aware that marketing scares a lot of authors. Therefore, she starts at the beginning and walks you through every step from setup to progressively more complex campaigns, showing that marketing doesn’t have to be frightening; it can (and should) even be fun! Throughout the text, she gives practical examples of how you can use what she’s discussing and action steps at the end of each chapter help to guide your thinking in what you need to do next to apply what you’ve just read. As someone with a master’s in public relations and a day job in marketing (and 13 years of experience), even I found this book to be extremely useful. While the first half was old hat for me, the refresher was a welcome one. I particularly enjoyed the later sections where she shows you how to set up a Facebook group, discusses advertising, walks you through a book launch campaign and gives suggestions on the best ways to use popular forms of social media to attract not only followers, but dedicated readers and champions of your brand. This is definitely a tool I will be keeping on my shelf and referring to throughout my career. I recommend this as a book every author needs to add to their toolkit.

In Part 2 she goes over basic fundamentals which give insight to authors on things they need to consider such as goals, their target audience, their bucket list, which social media sites reach which target audience, and how to build up a fan base. Part 3 discusses many of the tools available to help you succeed and Part 4 goes in to great detail about how to use momentum to really get the ball rolling. One thing that I really liked about this book is that there are action steps that are listed at the end of each chapter that clearly give the reader instructions on how to take the knowledge that was shared in the chapter and use it. I found this to be an extremely user-friendly book. There are so many wonderful things listed in this book to help any author better succeed. I would highly recommend it to anyone who would like to gain a better understanding of how to use social media to their advantage in this highly competitive world. I really appreciate the author's take on how to approach social media. In a world where the majority of society lives online, Facebook and other websites can be a great benefit to authors. While social media has a wide reach, if you don't tackle it the right way, it can also be a huge waste of time. Chris Syme puts a huge reminder on the fact that planning is essential to success. A great plan is necessary to a good end result, as is a budget to help boost those posts to a wide audience. I found I really appreciate the author's take on how to approach social media. I found the action steps she suggests to be helpful, but I would like a better idea of how much cash to sink into my page annually. This book is short and based around an acronym that's simple to remember and follow on a daily basis. These are easily applicable to everyday marketing techniques and strategies that can help me when it comes to marketing businesses or books on social media. I think this guide is well-written and includes a great deal of information. Though this book was received for reviewing purposes, this review is written based on my unbiased opinion.

(I received a free audio version of this book in exchange for a fair review.) For me, the challenge of writing a book is nothing compared to the challenge of marketing a book. If you feel the same, Chris Syme's book, SMART Social Media for Authors, will quiet the frustrated chatter in your head, explain where to invest your advertising dollars and your precious time, and, best of all, tell exactly what you need to run an effective advertising campaign, no matter what strategies you already have (I received a free audio version of this book in exchange for a fair review.) I had listened to a couple of Chris Syme's webinars in the past, and was impressed because, more than just cheering you on, she gave advice based on her marketing research. She seemed very well-informed and I liked what she had to say, so my hopes were high that this book would be useful. She does not disappoint. The advice that resonated the most with me was that social media, to be effective, must be used wisely, not at random. Action plans at the end of each chapter define precisely how to do that. She lists the tools available for marketing and frankly assesses each one for strengths and weaknesses. I appreciated that she differentiated authors' activity levels and always refered to that in her comments. I also liked the fact that she offered strategies to use at different times when building a marketing plan. She is obviously a seasoned marketer and she shares her experiences on what worked well for her, what did not work, and why. She warns that we must stay abreast of changes by constantly educating ourselves and it is plain that she practices what she preaches. She made it a point, in one webinar, to stress the importance for indie authors to share advice generously, and in this book she does just that. There are countless tips for accessing information on blogs and in books written by others. These alone are worth the price of the book. My only reservation is with the format. I would rather have the print version of the book so I could more easily reference the countless lists and tips. That being said, I'll listen to the book a second time, take even more notes than before, and probably still find many invaluable nuggets of information.

This book has some good useful tips. I like that there was some very practical steps to follow. The idea of buckets is a great idea - much more organized then what I currently have. She shares a lot about social media and which one(s) might be your best options as an author. There was also some good information on approach, pre-launch, launch and post-launch of a book. The best advice - know your audience. A helpful book for authors.

A View from the social media jungle Many, many helpful tips ( just have to implement) but it also feels quite overwhelming. Where is the time to write the next book, not just the next post, Tweet, or blog.
