Pluses and Minuses As an avid cookbook reader and registered nurse, I tend to be very picky about food books with recipes that make health claims. I was a bit alarmed when I read in the very first paragraph of the book that people are interested in the gluten-free diet for weight loss or because it's trendy... no mention in this spot about the medical necessity of it for some. I was a bit alarmed when I read in the very first paragraph of the book that people are interested in the gluten-free diet for weight loss or because it's trendy... no mention in this spot about the medical necessity of it for some. This author certainly made some missteps, like some of her descriptions and distinctions between celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and gluten sensitivity. She is only sometimes or partially right, unfortunately. The book has a large introductory section about gluten in general, including a list of foods that typically contain gluten. I wish she made distinctions between foods that always contain gluten, what sometimes contains gluten, and what usually only contains gluten if there is factory cross-contamination. She went off on a bit of a tangent toward the end of this section, discussing things like the paleo and alkalizing diets that don't have to do anything with following a gluten-free diet. She shares some of her personal experience with adopting a gluten-free diet for her family because of her son’s celiac sprue diagnosis. She talks about the weight loss aspect of a gluten-free diet, but then many of her recipes are actually highly caloric with a fair amount of saturated fat. For the most part, the recipes seem appealing, even for those of us who do not need to (or want to) specifically follow a gluten-free diet. I appreciated greatly something I rarely see in self-published cookbooks: the ingredients were actually given in the order in which they are used in the recipe. Each recipe has a photograph, though I am not certain if all the photos truly go with the recipes they are at the top of. One supposed chicken avocado salad seemed to have pieces of fish and no avocado, though I might be wrong. Unfortunately, every single photo in this book is black and white, which isn't as helpful as color photos to know what a dish should look like. Some photos are quite dark, too. The book also has a fair amount of language errors, including wrong words (there are vs. they are, for instance) and incorrect punctuation. The book certainly was not professionally copyedited or proofread. Some directions are definitely overwritten; the best recipe directions only use the words needed to get the instructions across. If you are looking for a gluten-free book with appealing recipes, this one might interest you. But if you really want the lowdown on the science of it, you need to look for another book. I received a free copy of this cookbook, but that did not affect my review. My book blog: https://www.readingfanaticreviews.com

Wow!!! Such an awesome tool!!! I was so impressed with the way the author explains everything from a description of gluten to what types of problems it can cause. Also, I really liked the way the recipes were categorized into mealtimes. They all sound so good, which is an added bonus!

My brother has recently gone gluten free due to some digestive issues. I got this so that I can understand the why and learn the how. I can't wait to make some of these when he comes to visit.
