I was so happy with this novel and I was surprised by the end at how much I enjoyed it. I had difficulties enjoying the past two books in this series. The characters in the previous novels didn't grab my attention. Not to say that the story wasn't good, but that's beside the point. This book was a better read overall. There were a few common day phrases that threw me out of the book such as "let me level with you" and at least one other phrase that jarred me from the book. Otherwise the language I was so happy with this novel and I was surprised by the end at how much I enjoyed it. I had difficulties enjoying the past two books in this series. There were a few common day phrases that threw me out of the book such as "let me level with you" and at least one other phrase that jarred me from the book. Otherwise the language and style felt natural to the character's environment and their unique personalities. Dery has a great talent for weaving the mythology seamlessly into her world, I loved the story of Orwyn. It felt like something you've heard, something ancient and memorable, but only because it has the flavor of a well-told legend. I absolutely loved the struggles that the characters dealt with and their very natural reactions to their situation. Their dire circumstances were always at the forefront and were never sideswiped by an overly saccharine romance scene as is prone in most novels of this genre. Overall, this novel was a wonderful read that I managed to get through in a matter of hours. As the author forewarned, this novel does end on a cliffhanger, but it only entices me to read the next book in the series, rather than leaving me frustrated and angry. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book, as well as any other books Mrs. Dery cooks up in her imagination.
