4 Stars Review: I love Jade's friendship with Kett, and I just love Kett, that oddly human yet inhuman vampire, so I was so glad he was back this time! And it turns out I really like Warner and Jade's relationship with him too, in a different way. He's a great guy and definitely a great love interest. And it was overall just another good story with some great characters and lots of different supernaturals. Whoo hoo! Jade is back and she's bringing the hunky dragon Warner and the ever mysterious vampire, Khett with her. Jade is on the hunt for another of the treasures she has been given the task of finding by the guardian dragons. What sent Jade off on the search for treasure number two so quickly? The adventure takes Jade and her friends through the nexus to San Francisco and then to South America. I cannot express thoroughly enough the mixture of emotions this journey with Jade took me on. I was bouncing all over the place and loving every moment! I know I'm being rather vague, but seriously, this is a such a great series that I do not want to spoil anything. So you really just need to head out and grab the entire series so that you can read for yourself what I'm raving about. Anyway, I bet you have come to the conclusion that Maps, Artifacts and other Arcane Magic did not let me down and you would be correct except that I did miss Kandy, the werewolf, who was still with her pack healing from her last big outing with Jade. This book was filled with everything I have come to love about the Dowser series, magic, fighting, adventure, flirting, quick witted dialogue and.....well, that was just so exciting and I'm not telling what happened. Oh and did I mention, chocolate and cupcakes!? Hello, what more can you ask for in a story? Now, all you need is your own copy of Maps, Artifacts and other Arcane Magic , some chocolate or cupcakes, a nice cuppa joe and you're ready for an evening of adventure and......oh I was so happy!!!

Jade may finally be growing up, which would be a big plus for me, as I have never liked her as much as the secondary & tertiary characters. World building is probably one of the biggest weaknesses of this series, relying on the tired and lame excuse that since the protagonist doesn't know what's going on (and she never does), we don't need to either. If you don't already know what Jade's favorite cupcake is from her bakery - information found in all the previous books - then this isn't the book for you. Unsurprisingly, this book was a slog. It’s no secret that I’m not a fan of this series, not by a long shot, but I had to read this book for a challenge, and I must say this fifth installment was just as bad as the others and incredibly boring. Why was it boring? Well, that crazy dragon chick from the last novel appears at the bakery, three month after the last one ended, and prompts a fight scene. It’s absolutely ridiculous just how powerful she is. Apparently dragon chick can withstand the powers of not only Jade, but of her mother and grandmother. Both of which are highly esteemed magic users. Mkay. Because this evil dragon, whose name is Shailaja by the way, is super duper awesome, she just ‘poofs’ away when the going gets bad for her. Which then leaves Jade twiddling her thumbs for roughly 80 pages of the book, and I know it was roughly 80 pages because I got bored and couldn’t read more than that in one sitting. The problem with the plot is that it horrifically drags. I have no idea why it takes 80 pages for anything to happen at all, but it does. After sulk raging about her bakery being trashed, Jade then works with Kett and Warner to find the second artifact before Shailaja gets it. Outside of all this, what I don’t understand is, it’s obvious that the dragon chick is nuts and yet the Guardians think nothing of it, even though she is going after objects that can kill them. How are they not concerned or hunting this girl? I don’t understand! The next 80 pages are a blur of juvenile bitchy behavior from Jade as the trio figure out the second location of the instrument of assassination and head to it. The mysterious centipede item is located somewhere in Peru so Warner and Jade go to Qiuniu for that’s his area, even if Jade is anxious about it. Ever since she gathered the first instrument, many of the Guardians have given her the cold shoulder, including the sexy Healer. Why is that? I have no idea! It’s never explained why some of the guardians now give Jade the stink-eye. After an uncomfortable encounter with Qiuniu, Warner and Jade head off to Peru and join Kett at the airport. After bumbling their way around the Andes, they finally come to a halt. They are now supposedly where the map indicated, but surely it can’t be that easy, can it? Of course not! The Stooges then fight and fumble their way into the mountain and descend down into the depths, crossing a river of molten silver. Things come to a head soon enough as Shailaja has followed them and another fight ensues. Now it’s not really a heart pounding battle, as never once do you feel like Jade will fail, but the end of it blows. Seriously, why does Yazi stop Jade and then coddle cuckoo dragon girl? (view spoiler)[Let me guess, it will be revealed in a future book that they are sisters or some garbage like that. (hide spoiler)] I honestly don’t get it! All I know is that the Guardians are acting really shady and I don’t trust them. Then after some well deserved crying and anger flare ups, Warner and Jade finally hop in the sack. And it’s an incredibly dull and passionless love scene. Bleh! The story then ends with Jade going back to the Nexus to confront the Guardians about what's going on, but she first encounter Chi Wen. He calls her the ‘Dragon Slayer’ and then things start to click in her head. She doesn’t particularly want that fate and isn’t sure what Chi Wen sees in her future, but she’s willing to take up the mantle and do what she’s gotta do, if need be. And that’s all Doidge wrote! I wish there had been more to this story, but there wasn’t. I wanted a grand adventure full of fun and humor, but I got none of that. To top it all off, Jade is such an unlikable little twit and Warner is an absolute tool with no personality. The only saving grace is Kett. Thank god for him! Though I think in hindsight, the only reason I may like him is because he doesn’t talk much so Doidge hasn’t been able to ruin his character. That’s a definite possibility! In a nutshell, the all encompassing story line is dull and pretty lame. The characters certainly do not help with making the plot better! Except for Kett, that is. The only reason this novel is receiving two stars is because of him. I think he deserves 1 star for helping me keep my sanity while reading this mediocre drivel. Why I keep torturing myself with reading this series I will never know. I can’t foresee myself reading the next novel anytime soon, or at all, but maybe one day I’ll feel especially masochistic and give it a go. And I’ll only do that when I miss Kett. The others characters can jump into the river of molten silver for all I care.

Gah – this book was infinitely frustrating. I spent most of my time wanting to wring Jade’s neck or her enemy’s neck. Either way, I am left feeling like there should have been way more death than there ultimately was. Sadly, also, there was a distinct lack of werewolves in this one. So, we join Jade as she navigates life sort-of dating a dragon. Yes, there’s still cupcake and chocolate descriptions enough to make you ravenous. Yes, we are still on the hunt for the instruments of assassination. Ye Gah – this book was infinitely frustrating. I spent most of my time wanting to wring Jade’s neck or her enemy’s neck. She’s been tasked with finding all three of these mystical killing weapons, so we are on to number 2. Also, remember that crazy girl from the previous book? She gets way worse in this one. I am left wanting to throw things at how bad it gets. Seems pretty straightforward for a book, right? Well, there is a lot of drama, travel, anger, horrible angry koala girls, and stupid dragons in Jade’s way. I’m actually pretty glad to take a break from Jade in the next book and visit with Rochelle. While I enjoy the bakery and all things chocolate related, I am getting a little tired of everything going wrong for Jade.

Good not great I get frustrated by Jade . She’s really powerful yet so stupid sometimes. This series gets better and better as you go. I struggled through the first half of book 1 only because i felt a good story in the making. I am happy that i did. There are some typos and repetition as to be expected but it seemed as if the last two books had more than the others. I do not particularly like paying for a book with these errors. Overall, i would recommend the reads

These books are not that good let’s just be clear. They’re not written that well, the characters are slightly uneven, and there’s some seriously cheesy dialogue. But I love them. I love this world and the magic system and Jade and Kett and Drake and Kandy and now Warner. I eat them up like candy and I can’t help it. I need to know what happens next.

In this one, he and Jade are dating...well, trying but with her dad constantly taking him off to destinations unknown, things have been progressing slowly. Either way, we do get Kett back, but Kandy is still recuperating from nearly dying 3 months ago. Whatever happens, do not kill of my favorite characters. We've already had 2 near / temporary deaths. Jade has successfully found the first instrument and has been tasked with finding the second. It has been slow going as she tries to figure out how to read the map for the second weapon's location. Just as she receives a clue that helps her pinpoint where the second instrument is, her child-like nemesis appears at the bakery. Now, on the one hand, I like that Jade does not want to hurt a child, on the other hand, this is no normal child and seriously, she just tried to kill her family. Turns out the child is the old treasure keeper's daughter, someone Warner knew, a dragon with exceptional power as she breaks through the bakery wards...wards that were created by a very powerful witch, supported by another powerful witch and Jade's magic to boot. I'm still not sure how that should have been possible, but it was. And in bringing down those wards, she also disabled Pearl, leaving Scarlett alone to protect them both. Turns out child dragon wants Jade's necklace and jade knife, or rather the powers embedded in each. Jade, in one of her first idiotic moves in this book IMHO, gives her the necklace. S uses the necklace to break through the curse binding her powers (umm, again, if her powers were bound, she must be the most powerful dragon to get through wards that many others cannot penetrate without causing serious harm to themselves). Now, instead of a child, she is a teenager. Unfortunately, she needs more power to fully regain what she has lost and needs the instrument, which she expects Jade to collect for her. Here is where the story started to bother me, and the ending just compounded it. When the guardians find out who S is, and how the seer did not know is beyond me too, you think they would have helped Jade or done anything differently? Nope. It is almost as if she is not important. Jade, that is. Without being a full dragon, on the scale of who is important, she is at the bottom. To re-enforce this, her own father saves S and chastises Jade for hurting her so badly. Um, really? How Jade does not walk away at that point and wash her hands of the guardians is beyond me. Especially since Jade does break the second clue, thanks to Rochelle and help from Kett, goes to Peru, takes on new booby trap challenges, nearly loses Kett again, and definitely loses Warner while wondering what in the hell she is doing all of this for. At this point, I'm happy that Kett is not dead, and that Warner was only temporarily displaced and he and Jade finally reconnected. Because honestly, outside of Drake, I don't trust or particularly like the guardians and need to take a break from the series.

4 Stars... This one was an improvement over the previous book, however, I still struggled with some aspects of the story... Unfortunately, the pieces that are lacking for me are the romantic aspect and the personality of the MC, Jade... I am baffled as to the direction of the romance; it seems forced and unbelievable given the occurrences in the first three reads... The connection with the sentinel lacks any and all chemistry and has seemingly come out of nowhere; she meets him in book 4 and all of a sudden is madly in love, WHAT???... It just does not add up for me when you have potential with both Kett or Desmond... Perhaps things will shift and become clear, but for right now that is a low point for me in the series... Also, the author needs to stop dumbing down her heroine... You cannot say that she is the most powerful supernatural being and then make her more concerned about her clothing and hair than she is about the threat looming in front of them... This naivety worked in the first book due to her being sheltered from her abilities, but now it just makes her appear incapable and shallow... Give her some depth and grit; allow her to demonstrate her strength, intelligence, and ability as a powerful supernatural... We get tiny glimpses of it, but then some one liner comes in and wipes it all out... She has great potential, let her soar!:)

Another great story! The stakes are getting higher. If I wasn’t holding my tablet, I would’ve bit my nails to the quick. I not only laughed out loud, but I gasped startling my husband, and I even cried with this book. What an amazing ride! The world MCD has created is such a delight. I absolutely love this book series. Though a few times the descriptions like that of San Francisco felt a tad heavy handed, everything from the unfolding of the story plot and series plot to the wonderfully developed characters and their relationships to each other, far exceeded and diminished the few clunky and heavy descriptions. It’s such a treat to read something that’s so entertaining and grabs you from the first sentence. That’s a testament to MCD skill as a writer and storyteller. Thank you MCD!

Finally. Some forward motion on Jade's romantic life. The sentinel is very interesting. Desmond is still an ass and needs to get over himself. I love that Jade is a badass who discovered she's a badass and doesn't spend all her time feeling sorry that she's powerful and questioning herself. Love her. One thing I would love is for the author to explain some stuff. She likes to let your read between the lines a lot. I'm not good at this so this stuff goes over my head. Like why was Warner going to let her down when she invites him in? Because he's 16th century? I get confused in these little tidbits. You should go read this. The books are short and I've been binging them like crazy. So good!

Jade continues to search for the remaining artifacts that can kill dragons. Jade struggles with figuring out the map to locate the next artifact that can harm dragons, especially the guardians. She finally unlocks the map to realize where the next artifact is and travels to Peru. But first she has an encounter with Shailara who tries to destroy her bakery. The storyline between Jade and Waren is a little on the weak side, she appears to be settling. But I will continue with the next book.

Dowser series and Oracle series A witch , vampire, Dragon and a werewolf walk into a bakery.... What you get is a series that can't put down!! Jade a half witch half Dragon, works her way through life and treasure hunt with her family and friends helping her along the way. Very funny and easy reading, doesn't have any slow or boring sections. You easily get sucked in from the start. I had to race to get all the series!
