If you liked Ender's Game at all, you're gonna love this story. It takes place decades before Ender's birth and details how the battle school was created. The focus on Mazer shows that he is an intelligent fellow whose strategic thinking can influence things even from light years away. The focus on Mazer shows that he is an intelligent fellow whose strategic thinking can influence things even from light years away. An upstart young lieutenant named Graff is tasked with running a project called battle school with the goal of finding a replacement for Mazer, the commander who won the war with the Formics during their previous invasion of Earth. The generals of Earth have decided to send the whole fleet to attack the Formic homeworld before the aliens can mount another attack on Earth. This is a 70-year trip, so Mazer is sent to a secret location in a ship flying at near-light speed to extend his life. (view spoiler)[Mazer is regularly contacted by ansible, an instant messaging system, to advise on what to look for in his replacement. Maser's refusal to cooperate causes the generals to order that his family be involved. Graff sends Mazer recordings and letters from his family which make him act, but in his own fashion. He threatens to reprogram his ship to never return to Earth if Graff isn't given full cooperation in battle school with Mazer's input. This creates a major reshaping of the military in support of Graff's search. (hide spoiler)]

Short and Sweet You have to have read some of the Enders Game novels to understand and appreciate the story. I enjoyed the short story, it fleshes out Mazer’s and Graff’s characters and we get to see the start of bonding they develop and the changes they bring about in the military. The art is good and suits the flow of the story.
