I'm already thinking of the two ways I can use this book as a mentor text: 1) Mother's Day is coming up next weekend. Have students write "Because you're my mom" pieces. 2) This is an example of an entire book using one of Jeff Anderson's infamous AAAWWUBBIS (As, Although, After, When, While, Unless, Before, Because, If, Since) introductory elements. This book can be used to show students how they can correctly use because at the beginning of a sentence so that it's not a fragment. After reading it, I have come to the conclusion that Ahmet Zappa is the dad every kid deserves to have. He clearly adores his daughter Halo and it shows through in this tearfully sentimental and also chuckle-inducing story.

Really a 4.95 for this part: "Because I'm your dad, you might miss a few days of school when I take you to New York for a hot dog..." First, as an educator, it would be both hypocritical and irresponsible for me to pull my son out of school for a frivolous trip when I am constantly complaining about being forced to accommodate students whose parents take them way for a week just before or just after our school vacations (cheaper prices, must be nice). Second, New York City is a steaming hellhole that I plan to avoid for the remainder of my days on Earth. Should my son be accepted to Columbia University, I'll pay for the Uber to drive him down there and see him at Thanksgiving.

Because I'm Your Dad is a really cute book for young children. Minimally it makes monsters seem fun and harmless. But it also helps children really connect with their dads. I love the spaghetti for breakfast. When my husband would go away for days on trips I would purposely give my kids an ice cream cone for breakfast - why? Because I could. Memories can be created in some of the simplest ways and as a parent (mom or dad) we have phenomenal power to create them. Every winter we drive to Maine and let our kids go in the ocean. We could go in our own state but it is the full day adventure and all the stops along the way that make it memorable. This book makes it very clear that each little thing creates a lasting memory. I do love this book and feel strongly that the author and illustrator did a fantastic job. I give this book 5 stars. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What a terrific book to give any dad or dad to be! Dan Santat’s bold illustrations of Monster Dad and child are fun and in no way alarming or fear-inducing for young children. The extras that he includes in them will generate more conversation after the text has been read. The simple text from author Ahmet Zappa embodies all the things that children deserve to experience with dad and brought a smile to my face as I remembered my husband doing many of the same things with our kids as Monster Dad What a terrific book to give any dad or dad to be! We are going through a bit of a monster phase in my house, with many discussions about whether monsters can be nice or mean and how sharp their corresponding teeth are in either scenario. I thought this would be a good book to put a positive spin on monsters and maybe help us move past this phase. Thumbs up! The dad monster does all the crazy "dad things" like spaghetti for dinner and late night TV together, and does other "dad things" like miss his kid while he's on business trips. It's been great for my son to see the monsters behaving just like he and his father do (that's a sentence I didn't see coming). The kid monster even has a little stuffed monster he sleeps with, and when he goes to bed his dad monster checks under the bed and in closets for him too. My husband gets a little protective when my son wants him to read this over and over, saying that we need to get some mom books too. I find mom books to be a dime a dozen though, but when you find a good dad book it's worth noting. I think this is a pretty good dad book.

I bought this book as a Frank Zappa fan, but as one who has followed with interest the development of his family. I have to say all the Zappa kids have come into their own as adults, each with a different niche in the artistic world. Ahmet's place is in books and movies for and about children. Dan Santat's rich illustrations are a further delight and offer parents an opportunity to go beyond the text, such as teaching about other animals not named on an Australian excursion. In its own, this is a beautiful little book for parents and young children to share. As a bonus for FZ fans like me, it's a fitting tribute to the memory of his famous father that Ahmet would want to bring up his own child the same way he was raised.

Lots of Kids books gonna be on this feed in the next few years since I'm Daddin' hard so be warned. I really can't handle all the kids books about a parent's love for a child. I just get too sentimental and start ugly crying in front of the baby, which is just awkward. Anyways, this one's fun and the art is good. Certainly easy for me to relate to my stand-in being a big furry monster. I really liked this story for several reasons. One is that it celebrates unconventional fathers, and who has a dad who isn't unconventional in some way? Another is that it shows that there's no need to fear monsters, as they have children, too. And my most favorite part of the book was when the dad said, "Because I'm your dad, I will miss you so much when I'm away and I promise to bring you back big surprises." Highlighting the benefits of having a "fun" dad, this book includes things like having french toast for dinner and playing rock music at a high decibel level. Filled with great illustrations and some silly things for dads to do with their kids, this one was a hit with Daddy, who's read it to Shortcake several times now. It's nice to have the phrase "Because I'm your Dad" be fun now because I have a feeling I'll be using it later in life in ways that aren't as much fun for her. I didn’t love this, but a child probably badly would. Which makes sense, as it’s a children’s book.

So, this is not a book that I would normally gravitate towards if I saw it on the shelf of a bookstore, or was shopping online. For one, the artwork on the cover does not catch my eye; for another, the title Because I’m Your Dad reminds me too much of “because I said so,” which to me is a non-ender for any argument with anyone. For one, the artwork on the cover does not catch my eye; for another, the title Because I’m Your Dad reminds me too much of “because I said so,” which to me is a non-ender for any argument with anyone. This book was a gift to me and my child, And, I am very happy we received it, because otherwise, we would have missed out on a solid read. Zappa, third of four children born to Frank and Gail Zappa (yes, that Frank Zappa), has crafted a tender book that highlights some of the things “Dads” generally do, at least according to popular culture, in raising their children. Zappa mentions everything from teaching how to ride a pogo-stick to making mud forts in the backyard. By the way, did you notice how I put dads in quotation marks? Well, I don’t necessarily think that it’s only dads that do these things. I think parents do them all the time when they want to inspire, cajole, motivate, or simply demonstrate love. But, I don’t mean to get preachy. Here is the thing. There is a dearth of books on the market that highlight fathers. In fact, as my child has not yet reached “reading age,” I find myself changing the gender on some stories merely to feature a father as the main protagonist and/or the figure that is showing parental affection. It is easy to find a story that features maternal affection–paternal affection, not so much. Zappa captures it brilliantly. The true test, comes in a reading. My four-year-old loves this book. He demands that we read it again and again. He even loves the artwork, that leaves me, well–cold. But, like so many things in life, it’s not about me, it’s about him; because he’s my son.

The 29-page book consists of a first-person narrative of a monster dad telling his monster child why he dedicates his attention and love to him. The hairy green, two-horned father appears to be single or live on his own, but still invests his time and devotion to play imaginative games with his child, travel, provide physical affection and provide a home with flexible rules. The book ends with the reason for his parenting style: "...because that's what my dad did for me.", which plays well as payoff if that is the reader's real experience. The illustration style of Santat balances details and simplicity using coloring and shades without any line work, which appeals to children as well as adults. The bond between father and child is especially noticeable in the fact that they are the only monsters in the human world. The child's color, purple, could play well with any gender if it wasn't for that fact that he plays in an all-boys soccer team. It is still a good book for fathers to read to their children, especially if they are not living with mom, and written in a style that is perfect to read aloud.

Because I'm Your Dad is a fun, bright and energetic book for young ones who adore and are adored by their Daddy. Bold, colorful, and a cute narrative from a father monster to his little monster. My little monster enjoys the book, though he still gets a little distracted. I love that it puts monsters in a harmless, not-so-scary narrative. Maybe I won't have to check for them under the bed! It's a great gift for Father's Day or just to encourage some daddy/child reading time. I'll be honest that I still love to read it to my LO too. This book is all about the “fun,” and maybe a little bit rebellious things that a dad does with his child (like letting him eat ice cream in the bathtub, or staying up late to watch tv, or teaching him how to burp loudly). Well this one is definitely not for every dad, some will love it. The illustrations are great and colorful.

Cute story and illustrations with a good sense of humor. It plays on a lot of the popular dad stereotypes for better or worse. I personally didn't love that the end was "I'm your dad, and I will do all of these things for you and more... because that's what my dad did for me." It's a sweet thought, but misses an opportunity for the emotional literacy of a dad to just tell his son, "I love you." Cute story and illustrations with a good sense of humor. As an adult reading this, I see a single father, possibly a part time one, trying to be the favourite. From a child's point of view, it is all the greatest things a father can do. So it is pure and fun, which is the best way to write a children's book. As an adult reading this, I see a single father, possibly a part time one, trying to be the favourite.
