Deputy Dave is prompt on the scene and starts investigating the man's past, and a flurry of questions begin. Could the mystery game be related to the murder? As a blizzard rages on the mountain and no one can leave; a real killer is now on the prowl. Following the storyline in this marvelous mystery will keep your eyes glued to the pages. I didn't want the story to end. For pet people, every pet is precious, and you want to pet and play with them yourself! The Sugar Maple staff feel like good friends. I'm in awe of author Krista Davis's ingenuity as she continues to create and expand this cozy mystery series. Bravo! I eagerly await the fourth Paws and Claws Mystery! The author provided me with a complimentary copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion and not influenced by anyone else.

I really enjoyed this third installment in the Paws and Claws Mystery series. In this story, Holly is taking over full-time management of the inn while her grandmother is on vacation. She hosts a Murder Mystery Weekend "Murder Most Howl" and someone is actually murdered during the event. Add a snowstorm and various characters with motives, means and opportunity, and it will take the sleuthing of Holly, her animals and friends to figure out what is going on. Her pacing and tone of voice do not vary, regardless of whether she’s narrating the consumption of pancakes or the main character stumbling over a dead body.

This book was awesome. The murder mystery weekend and the real murder blended together until you didn't know who was who and it all came together perfectly for a great and logical ending. I haven't met a book by Krista Davis yet that I didn't like. Highly recommend! This book was awesome. Hotels and places like the Sugar Maple Inn have cat and dog wings and allow the 4 legged family members roam and make themselves right at home. In this 3rd installment the town is hosting the Murder Most Howl Mystery Game where guests try to solve the mystery, like a huge game of Clue. There is a blizzard headed toward Wagtail that could put a little damper on the festivities. Of course, a body found outside the Inn could be a huge game changer too. Holly and her friends know the event is important for the town so they do all the can to keep things running smoothly while they try to solve the real murder mystery too. The regular characters are joined by some very interesting characters in town for the weekend, including The Thursday Night Cloak and Dagger Book Club and couple wanting to adopt a dog. The Sugar Maple Inn has a program called If The Dog Fits where guests can get to know dogs from the humane society. All the characters, human, canine, and feline, all come to life and leap from the pages. I really enjoyed this story. The mysteries, real and in the game, were very well thought out and plotted. Both had their share of red herrings, the game more than originally planned. :) I ended up reading the book all in one sitting and was sorry my virtual visit to Wagtail ended so soon. I look forward to returning there soon.

Another fun visit to one of my favorite fictional towns, Wagtail! As usual, this one didn't disappoint at all. It was a murder mystery weekend in January at the Sugar Maple Inn and Holly's friend Val who owned the pub Hair of the Dog, was one of the people planning it. This was a great idea to boost business in January but no one counted on a real murder, later followed by an attempted murder to complicate things! I loved how the weekend also included letting people interact with various dogs from the Wagtail If the Dog Fits program. Three dogs got their forever homes that weekend and Trixie, Gingersnap and some of the guest dogs and cats got extra playmates for a few days. As with the previous books, this one was a page turner and had me guessing the whole time who the killer was. I was pretty surprised at the end and the interesting reasoning/plotting. The take down was great, assisted by who else, one of the soon to be adopted dogs, Rooster, whose name got changed to Duke. I missed the presence of Holly's grandma Oma and her good friend Rose (Holmes's grandma) but I do love Mr. Huckle who did an amazing job of filling in. At the beginning it explained Oma and Rose were on a two week relaxation cruise. When Oma returned, she was super proud of Holly and how she'd managed to keep her cool despite a murder, power outages, blizzards and everything else that happened that weekend. I'd like to stay in Wagtail awhile so I might just start the fourth book soon!

I feel like a broken record, but I just can't stop saying how much fun this series is! Being a huge animal lover, going on a vacation to a town that caters to pets and their owners sounds a trip to paradise. The recurring characters are wonderful, even crotchety Aunt Birdie, and the characters added for this book were full of personality. And of course, the animals add a charm all their own. All in all, this one was another gem, and I can't recommend this series more! *5 Stars

I could leave it at that, but then this wouldn’t be a book review. So, since I want you to know why I want to live in Wagtail, I should tell you all about my adventures at Murder Most Howl. Technically I wasn’t there, but the writing made it difficult for me to not feel like I wasn’t. Did I mention I want to live in Wagtail? With Cibbl, my review sidekick, I was instantly lost in Krista Davis’ world that she penned. Wagtail is a fictitious town in the mountains of Virginia where dogs and cats roam free with their owners in all the stores, restaurants and homes. It’s like a pet utopia. Two shop owners in town, Holly and Val, are holding a murder mystery retreat called, “Murder Most Howl” involving visitors searching for clues as to who killed the deceased person in the game, Baron Von Rottweiler. On the night of the announcement when the clues and maps are given out, they find a real dead person sitting on a snow-covered bench outside The Sugar Maple Inn. Now, the entire town is under investigation and they have a real murder to figure out. As the game of Murder Most Howl continues the clues to the game start to sound like the life of a local town member. Someone also plants false clues to spread gossip about its residents both new and old. This doesn’t stop some from trying to solve the real murder, however. As someone with unknown intentions spread lies, truths and sets a long-time resident of Wagtail up for the murder, Holly Miller tries to figure out what went wrong and if someone turned “Murder Most Howl” into a real life and death game. “Murder Most Howl” is evenly sprinkled with good plot twists, fun characters and a new take (for me) on main characters as many of the animals play a big role in the resolution of the story. I love the small town feel of how the different shop owners interact and how Holly grows as a character. She starts off unsure of herself running the inn, to taking charge and overcoming emotional obstacles. The great thing about “Murder Most Howl” is how nicely woven the story is. No one acts over the top and the characters seem believable. One does not need to have read the prior books to enjoy Ms. Davis’ latest. This was the first I read in the series and I loved the book even not knowing the backgrounds of the characters. She lets you know who they are without taking a long time to do so. I was never lost when it came to who was who. Plus, if you do get confused, she has the character’s names at the front of the book, how they were participants in the town as well as what pets went with who. Honestly, those animals were all over the town. That was the only part I sometimes couldn’t keep straight. Dogs and cats are everywhere! And the best surprise after you finish the book is a bunch of recipes you’ve read about in the book. There are recipes for both people and animals. I will be going back to read the other two books in the “A Paws & Claws Mystery” series. Now, if Krista could please get on with making Wagtail real, Cibbl and I would like to book a room at The Sugar Maple Inn for the weekend. *I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review*

A blizzard shuts down the mountain and everyone is stuck in Wagtail - with a killer on the loose. Someone has also been stealing expensive items from the Inn's guests. Guess Holly's dream of some alone time with her love interest is not going to happen but she has everything under control... right? It's not Agatha Christie but the famous author does get a mention. The mystery was complicated and I never ever guessed who did what! The clues were just not there. I don't know if that's good or bad. It's obvious that everyone hated the victim and though they didn't deserve to die, they did deserve a bit of revenge. I was not surprised by the stealing plot. That was obvious and Holly would have thought of it if she hadn't been preoccupied. I had a hard time keeping the guests straight. They all blended together and sounded alike- rich, pretty, spoiled women and their husbands; older gossips and hateful old ladies. Another new human character is introduced-Shadow- the young handyman with a mysterious background. The other new human character to play a role in the story is Val, owner of the Hair of the Dog pub. Her story added another dimension to the mystery but the whole thing relied on a lot of coincidences. All other new characters not mentioned above are animal companions and they are the real stars of the mystery. I just ADORE Wagtail and I want to go there in the worst way! (Just not in winter) I love the idea of a pet adoption weekend held at a pet-friendly inn. Holly's romance doesn't get off the ground but Ben pays a visit and forces Holly to evaluate her feelings. She's a great character. She's not overly smart or really stupid. She doesn't do anything dumb and knows when to let the cops handle investigating. She gets spooked a little easily but that's understandable given the theme of the weekend. She's eager to prove herself to her grandmother and she did well. The only thing I questioned was how she could live in Wagtail and not know everyone and every place. How big is it? I love this series and I want more and more! If I can't go there in real life, the next best thing is reading these books.

Murder Most Howl is the third book in the A Paws And Claws Mystery series. Another exciting story for this pet lovers series. The object of the game is to gather clues and prop murder weapons, so that one can ask other guests and shop owners question to be able to answer who the murderer is and what weapon was used. But soon, malicious clues start showing up that become apparent to be directed at a resident of Wagtail. Just as the contest is getting underway a blizzard hit Wagtail, virtually cutting them off and leaving everyone stranded at the inn. Then Holly is out walking her dogs and Trixie, her Jack Russell takes off running and barking and she soon catches up and finds a dead body sitting on the bench with one of the prop murder weapons in his hand. Some of the guests want to leave but can't because of the weather, while others are to intent in outdoing the contestants to give much thought to a real murder. Holly is hoping that Dave Quinlan will be able, with her help, to find the murderer before her grandmother returns. But, probably, most of all the murderer isn't Shadow Hobbs. She'd hate to explain to her grandmother how she could have hired a murderer. Most all of the enjoyable and believable characters are back to take care of the inn and the whims of its guests. And course the pets of the guests and Holly's play a prominent part of the story. What a delightful place this would be to stay where the pets are treated as equals to their humans. Will be looking forward to the next book in this enjoyable series.

Can Holly and Val salvage the hunt and find the murderer? The writing flows so smoothly and the murder plots so well done that you can't stop reading. The central character Is Holly Miller who has been left in charge of her grandmother’s Sugar Maple Inn while the grandmother takes a much overdo vacation. Holly and the residents of the town decide to have a murder mystery weekend. In addition to the pretend murder, a real murder occurs. Everyone in town, including the murder mystery weekend guests, gets involved in solving the real murder. There is a developing romantic interest for Holly as well. Everything is further complicated by an intense snow storm loss of electric power. There are several story threads which eventually reach satisfying conclusions. The book includes a wide variety of interesting characters. It also has an underlying current of humor that I enjoyed thoroughly. A bonus are the recipes included for both humans and dogs. This was a fun read and I look forward to reading the earlier books in the series.

I enjoyed this book very much. Holly is in charge while her grandma is away, and she has her hands full. There is a murder mystery weekend going on and guests are arriving for the fun. She ends up with a murder mystery within a murder mystery when a dead body is found. On top of that she has to deal with loss of electricity, a pet adoption, Aunt Birdie, a blizzard and more. The only thing that bothered me was that as much as I love animals, I really didn't want to read about what every meal they I enjoyed this book very much. The mystery was excellent and kept me guessing, I had an idea but just couldn't quite piece it together. I loved the whole murder mystery weekend idea, and I love the characters. If you're an animal lover this is definitely the series for you, a very fun read and I will continue on with this series. I received this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review, and this is my honest opinion.

This has really become one of my favorite cozy mystery series to read. The animal theme town, Wagtail, sounds like a wonderful town to live in. The mystery was wonderful in this installment, and I was totally surprised who, the killer turned out to be. I'm very much, looking forward to the fourth book in the series. Interesting concept of totally pet friendly town. I’d go there. Ok mysteries. Good enough to keep reading can be a little stilted at times.

4.5 Stars The third book in the Paws & Claws series, Murder Most Howl sees the gang in the (unfortunately fictional) pet resort town of Wagtail hosting a murder mystery weekend. This was a great plot; moved along pretty well, but bogged down a little towards the middle of the book. Still, I have to say that although I figured out who the thief was, I really had no idea whodunit until the very end. I loved the whole murder-mystery-within-a-murder-mystery idea. Really well done! Deducted half a star because of a few niggling things; first, the whole Ben - Holmes - Holly triangle has got to go. It doesn't tantalize, it annoys. Second, there was an event that was mentioned before it was introduced into the story (Spoiler ahead) (view spoiler)[While on the way to Shadow's house, Holly mentions that the money clip has gone missing. Wait, what money clip? Well, a few chapters later, a character reports that her husband's money clip is missing. Either Holly has become psychic or there was a glaring plot error that somehow made it to publication. (hide spoiler)] Last, what the is the point of Aunt Birdie? Seriously?

Adding to the well-drawn characters are the cats and dogs of the town of Wagtail, and the dogs who are part of a try-out program. One couple in town for the mystery weekend and the "If the Dog Fits" program disagrees over which of the available canines will be right for them, revealing possible cracks in the marriage. A book club has come to participate as well, with one overly competitive member. This mystery flows smoothly, and in a number of directions as Holly tries to sift through fact and fiction. This is a likable town with a lot of nice (and a few not-so-nice) people. Krista Davis has written characters and situations that leave you rooting for the good guys and wondering right along with Holly how to put the puzzle together. This is the third book in the Wagtail series. They certainly can be read out of order, but I would recommend reading the whole series! I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am a huge fan of the Paws and Claws Mystery series! Each book is a complete story so you don't have to read the books in order, though I certainly enjoy doing so. Krista Davis has written another deliciously layered cozy mystery that kept me turning the pages, gathering clues and wondering about suspects all the way to the end, when the murderer is finally revealed. I especially enjoy all of the pets in the series and the mischief Trixie, Twinkletoes and Butterscotch get into as new pets arriv I am a huge fan of the Paws and Claws Mystery series! The town merchants and residents are all participants and when a not so popular resident is murdered, there's a double mystery to solve while a blizzard rages and personality quirks cause squabbles among guests and residents alike. Can Holly keep the inn running smoothly while juggling a real murder mystery, a missing guest, her former boyfriend, her abrasive aunt, and a power outage? Follow the clues and get to know and love the town's residents, quirky guests and their beloved four legged companions, who make Wagtail a town we would all love to call home. You will love this book! I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I received this book for an honest review. To be truthful, I haven't read the first two in the series yet and I am pleased I dove right into book three! It is a delightful, yet suspenseful series that only Krista Davis can write. I picked up on the main characters right away and fell in love with them, including Holly Miller. Holly is managing her grandmother's inn while she is away. The town of Wagtail is hosting a Murder Mystery Weekend and they end up with an actual murder mystery. This series keeps getting better. This time Oma is on vacation so Holly is in charge of the inn while a murder mystery/scavenger game is going on around town. Main character Holly Miller is finally in charge of the Sugar Maple Inn while her grandmother is on a cruise. A Murder Mystery weekend is planned and Holly's friends and pets are in for more then they bargained for. With a wind and winter storm baring down on them I too longed to check into the Sugar Maple Inn, getting wrapped up in the latest mystery and enjoying the Inn's famous afternoon tea. Wonderful story!
