The Special: A Story About Self-Esteem is about a toy lamb who fears not being wanted because of everything she perceives that she lacks compared to the other toys. This feeling is exacerbated by those toys’ arrogant claims of superiority. Children have a very strong sense of justice and of right and wrong, so in that sense, I believe many will be gratified by the ending. I myself was a bit conflicted about it. We are given a glimpse into each toy's life after the toy store and the reader is left to make conclusions about the lessons each toy may have learned. I feel those lessons might have been drawn a little clearer for the reader, particularly as it relates to self-esteem. Ultimately, though perhaps a bit predictable in its conclusion, The Special is a truly charming story. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. *

"The Special" is a great story to inspire kids to be themselves and that they have worth. The story begins with Mr. Woody, a toy factory owner, picking up a little stuffed lamb, Fleecy, who was just made in the toy factory. Mr. Woody tells his wife that each toy made is a special gift for a child. Fleecy wonders what is so special about her and does not feel very special at all. She does not know what she could offer a child. Mr. Woody tells his wife that each toy made is a special gift for a child. Fleecy wonders what is so special about her and does not feel very special at all. She does not know what she could offer a child. Her doubts are escalated by the other toys in the factory and later the other toys in the toy store, who brag about their abilities and special features. After seeing all the special things the other toys had, especially the pretty dress on the doll, Fleecy really doubted what Mr. Woody had said about her being special. Since there was a sale that day in the toy store, the other toys were quickly bought by children, including fighting, whining, and bratty kids. Fleecy was so sad when she was the last toy on the shelf. When a grandmother came with her granddaughter, she told her granddaughter that she was sorry all the good toys were picked out, so she offered to go back a different day. The granddaughter loved Fleecy and wanted to take her home, so the grandmother bought Fleecy. Fleecy was so happy! Although she was last, she got the best home. The fate of the other toys is also told at the end of the story. Since they were all bought by fighting, whining, and bratty kids, they did not have as nice of homes as Fleecy, so they were broken and forgotten. The story is a great lesson for kids to remain true to themselves and realize that they have worth. Not everyone may see that worth, but there are people out there who will appreciate them. This would be a great story for kids around ages 5-8 since it is a slightly longer story than regular picture books.

This book has a cute storyline. It's about a stuffed toy, a lamb, who is picked last at the toy store, but learns to appreciate itself and the unique value it brings anyway. It's a nice story that carries with it a valuable lesson for young children to learn, that they carry inherent value even if it doesn't seem like it when they compare themselves with others. I Just Loved this short & Sweet storybook. Highly recommended bedtime story & picture book for children. This story gives a special message and moral to children, that simplicity is always fruitful! I love the pictures illustrated as well, that goes well with the story. Good work!
