   It's not the ending we deserve, but it's the one we need right now. When original Batwoman writers J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman left the series (in part due to constant editorial interference), their long-running storyline was left with an incredibly abrupt cut-off point. The lengthy wait since then has meant that even trade readers like myself have caught up to their final issue (#24), in the excellent volume This Blood Is Thick and have been left wanting a conclusion. New series writer Marc Andreyko has now been given the unenviable task of ending a complex storyline he had no part in creating. Does he succeed in delivering a satisfying ending to the previous writers run? Not exactly, there's too many instances of poor dialogue and weak characterisation for that, especially with Kate and Bruce. He does however, deliver a fairly solid issue that completes the job for which it was intended. After all, from the moment DC quickly changed Batwoman #25 to a Batman: Zero Year tie-in, it was clear this series was being brought in line with the other Bat-family books. The Annual concludes with them swinging through the night sky for a patrol together. (hide spoiler)] There are a few neat touches here for long-time fans, including the return of regular artist Trevor McCarthy and colourist Guy Major. With this being an annual though, McCarthy shares art duties with Moritat. While his work isn't bad, it doesn't have any of the series signature creative flair, a problem also shared in the writing department. The remaining plot points are wrapped up in a predictable fashion, although there's a stand out page near the end that it'd be hard not to enjoy. All things considered, it's great that there was an ending to this storyline at all, it's just a shame it's lacking the excitement and innovation seen in the rest of the series. The Batwoman Annual ultimately does the job it was created for and without doing anything to outrage fans. Andreyko deserves credit for that, but this is most likely last i'll be reading of Batwoman.

   I really appreciated Andreyko giving readers some closure to the arc that was left unfinished by Blackman/Williams. It wasn't ideal for anyone, but this was able to tie up all the lose ends left by the previous writers.    I'm hoping that the next storyline is promising and give the new writers a chance to get a feel for the characters - I've been so in love with this series and really want it to continue well. This wrap-up was a little odd and abrupt but I think that's ok as long as they hit the ground running. Mostly I find I'm into/not into a storyline depending on whether I find the Big Bad interesting and this wasn't. I'm hoping that the next storyline is promising and give the new writers a chance to get a feel for the characters - I've been so in love with this series and really want it to continue well.
