Don't get me wrong, I love sparkling. But, what dulls my sparkle is considering all of the ways in which the world raises my histamine levels, which is Doreen Virtue's thesis for this book: "...the next day as I was walking along Post Street in Union Square, I heard the inner message that is the basis of this book. ... "The reason why you and so many people are experiencing life drama is because you're addicted to histamine." loc 81, ebook. She goes on to list various ways that one may lower this including: major dietary changes, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, certain types of exercise, therapy, dry cleaning chemicals, what types of plastic bottles to drink from, what types of television programs to expose yourself to, what types of make up to wear and much, much more. I hope that the readers who are looking for this type of information find Don't Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle because it is one of the most complete types of books of this kind that I've ever read. The thing is, I could make myself crazy if I tried to control all of that stuff. I've discovered, through my own life, that if I do the inner work of feeling better then external circumstances sort of fall into place on their own without me dancing around trying to make it so. Don't get me wrong- I am all for self care. Regular massages, aromatherapy, professional therapy, organic foods, support groups, whatever you need to make yourself feel better, do it. I just don't need to adjust those things to sparkle. I feel innately sparkly. I am a veritable disco ball of sparkles. Beyond the histamine issue, it is clear that Dr. Doreen Virtue had another career in psychotherapy. If you've experienced drama of any kind, trouble finding that special someone or encountered difficult personalities, she will help you get past that in this book. There again, my significant other and friends are all quite normal and low drama- sparkling, if you will. But, if you've had troubles, this could be the book that you're looking for. So, seriously, don't let me deter you if you feel you need to read it. "Remember, it's not about how many friends you have; it's the quality of the friendships that matter. Even one good friendship, built upon mutual respect and other healthy qualities, will help you sparkle throughout the day." loc 2034, ebook. Meditation and yoga, two of my favorite things, are highlighted in this book as ways to improve your life. I couldn't agree more! In this passage, Doreen is talking about dealing with potential drama in your family or with in-laws: "...any way you slice it, the situation will bring up stress hormones in your brain and body, and part of being responsible is taking care of yourself. So, go do yoga as soon as you can. Play gentle music, meditate, eat a low-histamine diet, and avoid chemicals." loc 1961, ebook. The trouble is: brownies are not low-histamine. That's a deal breaker for me. I recommend this book if you're sick and fed up with the way life is going and you want to try something drastic to turn it all around. Otherwise, I'd have to suggest borrowing this one from the library. I've heard that high library usage lowers histamine levels and makes you sparkle too. Kidding. Thank you to NetGalley and Hay House publishing for a free digital copy of this book.

Not in a bad way; this is more of a good shock. I'm going to do this review differently. I'm just going to write. If you know me, you know my reviews are long. So, let's get to it. First, the only thing I didn't agree with: loud music being negative. I am a rocker at heart. My rock music gets me through things that nothing else has been able to. I blast it in my headphones and, well, rock out. I am doing that right now, actually. Seriously, that is it. That's all I don't agree with. On to the rest. Note: I have express permission to share these details. I cried. A lot. PTSD is a very active player in my family. In the 90's, a freak work accident almost took my dad's life. The left side of his face was crushed by a pipe - he was hit around 32 times. His neck and back were broken. He should have been killed, yet I am proud to say that he's right downstairs, texting me as we speak. By the miracle of God, he can walk, talk and is a completely normal, functioning human being. He developed severe PTSD from that accident and has battled it ever since. Somehow, my daddy, my hero, never once let it affect our relationship. As I write this, I am 30 years old and he is 63. He and I basically live together. We cherish each other and when I moved to Maryland in 2012 to escape people and be with my husband, my dad and I both sank into a deep depression from being apart. My husband moved us back, and now my dad and I are together again. His relationship with his only daughter has never once been hurt or negatively affected by his PTSD. I have no idea how he does it but I sure do admire his strength. He's one hell of a role model. My husband Sean is a combat veteran. He was in Iraq and came back changed as soldiers do. He also was injured very badly. He's been diagnosed with severe combat PTSD. He would fight this with alcohol and drank so much he couldn't function without it. In 2012, I told him that we were going to begin weaning off alcohol. I drank infrequently. (What?! A Wisconsin girl that doesn't drink?! I know, I know.) So, Sean and I did it together. As of October 1, 2013, we have been sober. We battle PTSD every single day, all day long. Reading this book, this phenomenal literature, about PTSD, was life changing to me. Ms. Virtue gets it, she understands, and she helps. There is no blame here. There is no "sucks to be you" tone. It is crystal clear that she isn't writing books to write books. She wants to help. She wants her readers to be okay. Best of all, she knows who her readers are. She describes symptoms and follows that with what you can do to help yourself and those you love. You learn how to handle any given issue, and these are easy things you can do. This isn't some long, drawn out process. She lets you know it will take time, and it can be hard, but you can do it. She gives a lot of reassurance but is honest. I had no, "huh?" moments reading this. Now, let me say that I have looked into, and read about, PTSD and trauma almost obsessively. I want to know everything I can. I keep up on the latest research and breakthroughs. I want to know about therapies and help. I have more notes than I care to admit. I've taken this on with Sean. And in doing so, he's gotten a lot better. But, something else happened. I ended up with secondary PTSD. I don't need to go into that here, the book talks about it and describes it. I have been called crazy and told that STS is not a real thing. Believe me, yes, it is. However, I would not change it, but I have not even begun to deal with it. With the help of this book, I now can do that, because there are answers here and a lot of helpful ideas and suggestions. Drama is something that surrounds us. I always bristle when I hear, "oh, I hate drama. I avoid it!" because I know that that can't happen. It's inescapable in the world we live in. If you want to know how to constructively handle drama, this book is full of ideas. You will learn just what drama is, how it manifests, how it truly affects you and what you can do to better your life. I saw a lot of things that I have never noticed before. I also feel a lot better about relationships that have ended in my life that before, I missed and didn't understand. Now, though, it makes sense, and I know I am better off. Personalities are described here, and I warn you to be prepared. You may see yourself in these, and like Ms. Virtue says, that is okay. If you are honest with yourself, there are steps you can take to heal these things. Be open and ready for change. You aren't going to be stigmatized here. The wealth of helpful information in this book is unlike anything I've read when it comes to these things. Anything you can thing of, from natural remedies, to yoga, to journaling, and everything in-between, is here. You aren't going to get "do this and you'll be all better". No, this is detailed, laid out easily for the reader. There are resources too, places you can go for help for everything. If you are looking for help or just to better yourself, you will find it here. I feel like I hit the jackpot with this book. It came at the perfect time in my life and it is now a treasure of mine. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, really. A lot is covered here, and nearly everyone can benefit from the trauma and drama help you'll find. Read it with explicit honesty with yourself. Utilize the resources. I believe that no matter how amazing we are, we can always improve and be better versions of ourselves. Or, read this to help someone else. Either way, it's all included in here. I can't think of one thing that I wish would have been here - that's how complete it is. And that, my friends, makes this book a serious, ultimate hit to me.

With such a fabulous title I so wanted it to hit the spots! To grab me and to really help me see the sparkle in myself and in others too! Well, right out of the gate I had some issues. To begin with, I did enjoy the talk about trauma. Trauma is literally traumatic, so much so that it can stop someone in their tracks just by a trigger! I have some issues that are triggered out of nowhere so I was hoping this would be a positive experience. So many people are hurt by trauma and the drama that surrounds them. Sadly, it doesn't quite hit the point in her questionnaire. The Drama Quotient Quiz seemed a bit off. Things that I said yes to, like I enjoy watching reality television shows, do not seem really dramatic. A more pertinent question may have been if that reality show is mired in drama. I get her point but there is a difference. For the reality shows I watch, they are all art based. Project Runway DOES have drama but it is not based around drama. Neither is watching Pitbulls and Parolees. I love dogs and want to help them have a voice. Some drama in that one, but not enough for this list. Also, I am one of the hardest working people I know. This question definitely got a yes from me. I work hard and I enjoy putting in 100% effort. If I do not put in 100% effort I know it. Other people will know it. Again, I'm confused about this question as well and so many others. So, while the questionnaire was interesting, it also frustrated me and put me on alert. This book is supposed to be about losing the drama right? The book then continues to point out places where there may be drama in your life that you are choosing. •Choosing friends or romantic partners who have high-drama personalities •Focusing upon low-priorotiy activities, instead of working on what matters to you •Ignoring your inner knowingness, which is warning you to stay away from a person, behavior, or situation •Sending more money than your budget allows •Abusing substances that magnify your anxiety (for example, stimulants, including caffeine, nicotine, and sugar) or depression (depressants, including alcohol, for instance) •Not planning ahead and facing an impossible deadline that has you racing against the clock. While I agree that these can cause drama, she then says "This isn't to blame you (after all, blame never helps anyone or anything). Instead, it's call to engage in detective work to help you recover your beautiful sparkle and everything that goes with it: happiness, health, peace, abundance, and high self-esteem." I did agree with her idea on how some people just live for the drama. I have a few people in my life that are like that. Sometimes I am too. I prefer not to deal with drama but there are certain subjects, dogs for example, that I will do everything and anything for. There are people out here that would do anything and everything JUST for the drama of it all. Seems exhausting to me! Although I did start enjoying her points she wrote a book that seems to be pointed out for a younger audience. It's almost as if she is condescending and making things even more simple than they have to be. Something I am hoping to get my PhD in is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and this portion really was my favorite. I love how she addresses this as a serious and overwhelming reaction to trauma that ANYONE can have. It is not just for those in the military. She talks about the reactions and what can be done about them. And most importantly, that anyone with PTSD can have a life! Prior to the PTSD chapter I was ready to quit reading. This chapter was the book saver for me. Everything that I've studied (so far) about PTSD she has in here. The diet chapter though. I understand needing to reduce sugar but some of these foods seemed interesting to me. Dieting is already hard enough and she is adding in egg whites and black tea, among many others! I have not done any studies on histamine but I feel like there is already so much out there that taking away all of these foods also, as well as KALE, I mean... we would starve due to not being able to eat anything. It isn't her fault that all these studies are out there but my goodness... Part two explains how to regain your sparkle but my goodness. After all of this now comes the positivity! I almost wish she would have edged some of the positivity into the beginning parts of the book. It may have felt like less to digest. "Sometimes we have drama-filled lives because of fears that peace is boring." While I may not have believed this for myself, I totally felt this from a family member. My Dad cannot sit still for two minutes. And maybe that is why I hate drama so much. Both of my parents absolutely love drama in its various forms. I can see how this statement can be true, even if we do not know it is. For me, it is not that peace is boring but that, especially with the reality shows I watch, I want to see growth. That's why we go to films, or read books; to see the character arc. It does not have to be a horrible, drama filled character arc to be good either. Overall, I think the book was okay. I really enjoyed some portions and some really frustrated me but overall it was a good book. I'm curious about her other writings. Received from Hay House, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a typical okay, average, self-help book. It did have some good information and content that can be taken away with after reading but it really did seem like the average read, nothing beyond that. Additionally, I found some of the suggestions and recommendations unrealistic to the point of causing an eye roll or an actual laugh out loud. First the dietary recommendations. I understand that an individual's diet can have a large impact on their stress levels. However, the suggestions and restrictions given in this book SEVERELY limits what a person can eat. That in itself seemed unhealthy to me. This is not your average "gluten free" or "vegetarian". This is THAT restriction while restricting healthy elements like certain vegetables (kale, peppers, etc), teas, and more on top. While I do think this book did have some good tidbits within, I also felt that it kind of stressed me out. Kind of ironic considering the purpose of the book eh? I felt that there were some pretty extreme expectations that could be set just by reading this book and that they would be pretty hard for anyone to follow. I read many lifestyle or "self-help" books with the same purpose of holistic wellness and decreasing negativity/stress. There are many books more helpful than this one and I definitely would not recommend this one to others.

One of my favorite of Doreen's books, although it does go off on tangents still. Focuses primarily on the attachment to drama due to some form of trauma, and then how to work through it. Some chapters I felt were more helpful than others. A few phrases stuck out as being adversarial or even defeatest - which seemed counter to the book's premise. One in particular stung more than the rest, something about "back to therapy" if you hadn't done XYZ yet regarding romantic relationships. While I understood what the author meant, I didn't feel the comment (while intended to be a joke) that lighthearted or supportive for someone struggling with reducing the drama in their lives in order to attract a loving partnership. All in all, I'd recommend this book. It's written with a simple, straightforward focus, and takes otherwise woo-woo topics and makes them seem like no big deal. The subtitle, I feel, described the book more than the actual title.

Well, as a someone addicted to approval seeking and people pleasing, this book really hit the spot. Just for the clarity and vocabulary alone. I mean, angeraholic. It explained so much for me. I found the reasons for my extreme emotions and stress, you might fine yours here as well. Doreen also give a lot of excellent advice in area of detoxing from stress and avoiding or coping with stressful future situations. Highly recommend!

I have borrowed this book twice now from my local library and I was pleasantly surprised with its content. I had written Doreen Virtue off as a Fairy Queen, ungrounded in reality and capable of new age delusions. This book was disappointing! The content was a loose compendium of research with no cohesion. I didn't finish it and skipped chapters trying to find a connection. It was nothing more than basic lists of 'causes' ; diet, PTSD, addictions etc and 'suggestions for sparkle' diet ,exercise, meditation etc. Nothing new here. This book was disappointing! Doreen Virtue is highly qualified to give advice on how we handle, and could better handle, stressful situations. She holds her hands up and openly describes how her own life led her to the research behind 'Don't Let Anything Dull Your Sparkle', which, looking at the bibliography was quite extensive. Although not all of the content exactly resonated with me, a lot did and much of it to others I know; so much so that within a few chapters, I was ordering a copy for a close friend. Although not all of the content exactly resonated with me, a lot did and much of it to others I know; so much so that within a few chapters, I was ordering a copy for a close friend. There is a great deal of food for thought about what we let into our lives, intentionally or not, from what we choose to watch and read to what we eat and even wear. Virtue only refers to the law of attraction in passing reference and focuses on the mental and physical effects of traumatic experiences and how we become addicted to stressful situations and thinking. It's the law of attraction made incarnate, so to speak. We forcibly manifest negative experiences because we're junkies for the thrill. I like Doreen Virtue's style in that she puts herself into her writing. She has a tendency to use particular words and phrases quite frequently, which might be annoying for some, but since her aim is to help us make a shift in thinking, reinforcement by repetition is no bad thing. You can't fail to read this book and take away an understanding of what harm we do to ourselves on a regular basis. For such a heavily researched title, it's a surprisingly quick and light read and definitely worth investigating.

Doreen Virtue is my aunt in a past life. I’m kidding. But really, Ms. Virtue inspires me to be my best self. It is super cheesy, I know, but this book gives the butt kick you need. There are key tools in here such as getting out of yourself so that you can truly shine in this case, Sparkle! We absorb so much crap and drama in this media world. If you can imagine a world without all this, like hey don’t take on other people’s inventory, then keep reading. You are in for a treat. You take this app Doreen Virtue is my aunt in a past life. You take this approach to change and take it head on, like you would a bull’s horns, and you don’t let go. Her intent of this book is to help people gain understanding into experiences and emotions we may not understand, but also helps us seek understand into other people’s actions. I am not sure whether I was angry with her at time because she was spot on with what she was saying, or more angry that I myself am victim to all of it, because I allow it. Whatever this is to you, a wake up call, a slap in the face, your dream calling, your bedside confidant, give it a chance. The worst you can say is I read it. Read it and form your own opinion. You may just find yourself writing these practical tips down. If not, then hey, count how many times she uses the word sparkle instead .

One thing missing from this book is mentioning that the practice of yoga for trauma is something else. I wished she had looked into it more and discovered that yoga for trauma can sometimes cause more problems for the person than to help. Secondly, a very strong opinion about metal music that it's always going to have a negative affect I disagree with. I felt the list of histamine and non histamine producing foods was limited and that a person could not work from these lists very easily if they wanted to try following this kind of diet for any amount of time Traditional meditation also is something that can be too difficult for someone with PTSD where other options may work better. It depends on the person, the degree of their trauma and a whole host of other factors. These are just things that may help but should be done under the supervision of a teacher with training and experience for meditation and yoga for trauma. Otherwise it's generally a great book leaning towards the positive and a multi diverse plan to strive for balance in your life

This book was transformative for me. It was a real eye-opener into how I could better help myself to deal with stress and drama, including the foods that I was eating that serve to amp-up feelings of anxiety. It boosts serotonin levels, and many people can max out from consuming too much leading them to feel unhappy and miserable...Since learning about histamine and it's negative effects on the body when we produce too much of it, I've modified my diet and am definitely benefiting from this changes. I also loved the fact that Doreen comes from a clinical background as well as a spiritual one. That means that she is considering more than conventional medicine to assist readers in reaching their personal goals. I also suggest having an open mind when reading this book. People who are in a rut tend to approach new information negatively and dismiss information quickly if it doesn't fit a conventional model.

I always admire Hay houses Authors, Doreen Virtue is one of my favorite Authors. This book is awesome. I have had some past traumas in my life and I am working on self healing. I will practice some of these that she talked about some I have already been doing to heal all of my aspects of my life to have a perfect harmony. As there is a new situation that is really new in my family life but I am being adaptive too but still need to get more healing time on this situation. One good thing the mother had asked for my forgiveness and knows it will take time for me to do. I am at the fearful stage and eggshells of what is it she really is after? So the forgiveness is one of the areas I have to work on. I have a better understanding of myself also. So if someone wants a good self help book I would recommend this one, I had a lot of AHA! moments while reading this. And she cited good.

I thought this book was great. I liked the ideas of not reacting to every trigger that comes your way but working thru your feelings. Also listening to your feelings with boundaries. And finding ways to deal with negative talking that I hate doing with something I hate doing.....like dishes and how bringing more music and bringing more things I love into each day. As with the histamine subject I found it very interesting but I feel you really have to discern how that works with your body. As som I thought this book was great. As someone who has been studying holistic health for 30 yrs and have had counselors over those yrs remove sugar from my diet unsuccessfully, I found that indulging in a childhood love of baking regularly and being really good at it and bringing treats and joy to me and others far surpassed the need to stay sugar free which was making me miserable as a baker. So it all comes down to how your body feels. And your mind.

We can reduce stress in many ways including using discernment when watching news, movies , or television.

Awesome read. Very eye opening. There is a ton I’m taking from this book. This book was very healing for me. Although this book is subtitled “how to break free of negativity & drama” I feel as though it’s more of — how to heal yourself from negativity & drama. — I loved the food knowledge in this book and the link between food and chemical responses in your body. I will definitely be using this information going forward in my life. Doreen talks a lot about PTSD in this book and although the book Awesome read. Very eye opening. Doreen talks a lot about PTSD in this book and although the book doesn’t hint it is for those with PTSD, I think it would be a great tool for helping on the journey. Also the connection to PTSD and the references give the reader the ability to understand the magnitude of the drama/trauma effects on the brain. You’ve gotta read this!

On my wife's recommendation, I started reading this slightly unconventional work from Doreen. I have to admit that a lot of situations felt very familiar, but dragging in the supernatural and jumping to conclusions made me not like it that much. Yes, it's very well researched, but adding a reference from rat experiments does not mean it's appliccable to humans, and tht is not even mentioned in the text itself. I love Doreen. I have so many of her books, CD's, audiobooks and cards. Been a follower for many, many years. Even though she has made some life changes I still love the inspiration and knowledge in her teachings. This was the audible version of the book. I have both. Just listening to Doreen read her story makes it come to life. She is very easy and joyful to listen too. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a lift or a gentle inspiration.
