I received this Kindle edition ebook as a goodreads giveaway. I really wanted to like this book. The premise, people traveling back in time, who become involved in a war between rival societies that could lead to the destruction of the entire planet, has so much potential for creative plot twists and social commentary. Unfortunately, that potential is not realized here. In fact, there isn't even a near approach to it. This might have been a decent 300 page book. Unfortunately, that potential is not realized here. In fact, there isn't even a near approach to it. This might have been a decent 300 page book. At over 600 pages, the plot moves at a glacial pace, hindered by banal dialogue and mindless, unnecessary details, such as characters moving from one location in a room to another. There is little character development. The main female character reacts to everything with tears and wailing; one of the male protagonists deals with things with sarcasm, and the other seems to mature and grow, but still cries all the way to the climactic scene. As if that weren't enough, I doubt that there was even one of the more than 600 pages that didn't have at least one grammatical error. For the love of God, I would rather see people incorrectly use an apostrophe every time they needed to pluralize a word than to see, over and over, two or more words pluralized, once with the apostrophe and the other times without it. The book, while it contains a few scenes that are of an adult nature (nothing graphic), mostly reads like YA fiction. Sometimes it's like it was written FOR a young adult, but, almost as often, as though it was written BY one.

I won an eBook version from Goodreads Giveaways. The premise sounded interesting to me -- I like space/time travel sci-fi, portals into alternate realities, reluctant heroes pressed into service as savior of a world-- but I'm afraid this self-published Indie book is "not ready for prime time." I respect aspiring writers and those who actually produce a full-length novel, and clearly this author developed some creative ideas about an alternate reality. I respect aspiring writers and those who actually produce a full-length novel, and clearly this author developed some creative ideas about an alternate reality. Unfortunately, the writing is problematic on many levels; not only does this desperately need serious editing, pruning and proofreading, but the author could benefit from writing classes, workshops, peer groups and other tools to help her develop her craft. The writing feels very much like that from a novice: character development and motivations are superficial and predictably formulaic, plot devices and explanations strain credulity (the main character, in his role as janitor, is conveniently able to readily eavesdrop on sensitive conversations, and retrieve classified meeting transcripts and reports out of a wastepaper basket), point-of-view and tense often shift disconcertingly, too much exposition occurs through "character 'splainin'." Grammatical/syntactical errors abound, and I'm left wondering whether the author simply did not proofread sufficiently, or if she "doesn't know what she doesn't know." Sometimes Indie novels can be gems, but this one did not draw me in. It needs a lot more work before it should be presented to a reading public.

Characters and writing need some more work. The writing seems flat, it does not draw you into the story.
