A good idea and a very good introduction to French culture for expats. Very annoying layout. You need to read each section twice, once for the text, and again for the side bars. I suppose this is aimed at modern dabblers, rather than folks who actually read. No index either. :-( Good content, poor delivery.

Over the years I have read a few very good books on French life and culture, one of them now long out of print and I can no longer find it. I read it in university and wish I had a copy for my personal library. This one is currently recommended by a number of credible sources. However, I find the style of the book difficult to read. If you can, scan the book design and layout. It's a jumble of little sidebar bits and short paragraphs with headers. Too much overly fancy book design and not enough Over the years I have read a few very good books on French life and culture, one of them now long out of print and I can no longer find it. This is a fabulous reference on France. I'm keen to see what other countries they've covered - it seems to be a series. The book gave a concise history, overview of art, food, wine, movies, books, philosophy etc. and made sure you know exactly where to start looking for more information. Very useful! I was really excited to read this fun and quirky synopsis of French culture, but I actually stopped reading half way in because I didn't feel like I was learning things about the culture that would be helpful while visiting France - which is why I got the book. This was a book packed full of as many facts as possible. I learned many things I had not known before, therefore, it was a successful read!
