The authors of this book have collected fashion plates for decades and have a collection that spans the 15th century to the 1950s. The book illustrates plates from their collection and provides a social background for the illustrations explaining how fashion changed and the names of various publications as they came and went. (though it seemed to miss the consolidation of the various publications in France in the 1820s that saw many gobbled up by journal dames et des modes) For an overview of the The authors of this book have collected fashion plates for decades and have a collection that spans the 15th century to the 1950s. If however you are a collector of fashion plates this book is of limited use. Few of the images show the the full plate and most are lacking the descriptive elements below the image or the plate numbers usually at the top of the plate. In some cases plates which are copies of original French plates in foreign magazines are shown without an explanation that this is the case (or any advice on how to tell them apart). The book also lacks any comprehensive list of the magazines illustrated and the years they were published in. In short, if you want a book that will give you an introduction to fashion plates you might find this useful. If however, you are like me and have collected plates for some years you will probably find the book a disappointment and there are other older books which provide more useful information on fashion plate publications for collectors.
