This text will not only introduce readers to various types of digital tools and resources but will provide practical approaches for using digital tools in instruction. Each chapter will contain key elements that prompt brainstorming about digital tools, connections to the Common Core State Standards in Language Arts, and resources for teachers to plan instruction that incorporates digital tools. The introductory chapters (i.e., Chapters 1 & 2) establish and situate digital tools in K-5 education by (a) providing an overview of the importance of using digital technology in education and (b) outlining long-range and short-term planning for integrating digital tools into instruction. Chapters 3 11 focus on different categories of digital tools (e.g., digital images, audio tools, writing tools, social networking tools). These chapters open with vignettes providing classroom scenarios concerning the use of the topical digital tool. The chapters then provide sample tools and activities for readers to consider (a sample table is provided in the description of Chapter 4), along with explicit connections to Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts. A detailed lesson plan is provided in each chapter to illustrate how that digital tool may be used in instruction. Finally, sample activities and resources relevant to the topical digital tool are presented. The closing chapter (i.e., Chapter 12) describes possible issues that may arise when integrating digital tools into instruction to address concerns or hesitations relevant to integrating digital technology into K-5 curricula."
