Kevin Grierson has a malevolent doppelganger, Shadow, who starts to take over his life as a speed-addled fashion copy writer in the late 60s “At Darlington’s” by Richard Bowes, while Stern, a veteran of the Brazilian Wars where mind-controlled mechanical spiders cut a swath through enemy soldiers, is recruited to assassinate a senator by controlling his daughter in “Sheep’s Clothing” by Dale Bailey. The wizard Kedrigern and Princess are called to a small kingdom to try to fix an ailing griffin but the cure may turn out be pretty costly in “Nest Egg” by John Morressy, and Marc Laidlaw closes the issue with the grim fantasy of the swampy “Dankden”, where phib hunters kill the indigenous life for their waterproof skins but where some hunters have taken to an easier and more atrocious work. Good issue overall.

Re-read. I originally read it in 1995. Kedrigern and Gorlen were familiar, but once again the stories forgotten. 14 • Lifeboat on a Burning Sea • 29 pages by Bruce Holland Rogers Very Good/Excellent. Maas is working on a way to extend life by creating a way to store his essence in a machine. He's the hardware man working with Robinson ideas and Bierly finance. They name their project TOS for the other side. 61 • At Darlington's • 19 pages by Richard Bowes Awful. The premise was good. A guy having Re-read. I originally read it in 1995. They name their project TOS for the other side. 61 • At Darlington's • 19 pages by Richard Bowes Awful. The premise was good. A guy having an inner shadow that takes over. But both Kev and his shadow were the same guy, and I didn't care about either of them. 80 • The Singing Marine • 13 pages by Kit Reed Fair/poor. On his way to turn himself in a marine is distracted from his purpose by a woman. She leads him to get a tinder box. By that time it's too late. 93 • But Now Am Found • 6 pages by Nina Kiriki Hoffman OK or eerie good. Iris wakes to find two extra bodies in her bed. It's fat self and a small self. 99 • Count on Me • 11 pages by Ray Vukcevich OK/quaint. A lot of fiddling around with numbers. 110 • Sheep's Clothing • 29 pages by Dale Bailey Excellent. Stern, a veteran and now teacher is recruited to assassinate a senator who has a swing vote which could lead to the production of biologic weapons. Stern was a remote operator of the spiders during the war. His recruiters have found a way that will allow him for 20 minute to control movements of the senator's daughter. 139 • Pulling Hard Time • 5 pages by Harlan Ellison Good. A man kills four men who are raping his wife. Due to the brutality he used he is sentenced to life in prison. Not sure what the moral of this story is. 144 • The True History of the End of the World • 29 pages by Jonathan Lethem, John Kessel, James Patrick Kelly Very Good. Chester, leader of the valutarian party, is one of the last hold outs not taking the C-K treatment. His frustration with the world leads him to going to an accommodation center. The first person he meets is the leader of a religious cult. 185 • Nest Egg • 17 pages by John Morressy Excellent/VG. Kedrigern stories always have an extra sprinkling of humor to go along with him solving a problem. In this case he is summoned to help cure a griffin who is refusing to eat or even leave his shed. Not only is he a great friend to the king's children, with him ill the kingdom is being threatened by invasion. 202 • Dankden • 35 pages by Marc Laidlaw Very Good/Good. Gorlen is a bard and has been afflicted with a hand that has turned to stone. He arrives in Dankden to find it a very wet town inhabited by humans and half-breeds. The human occupation of hunting phibs for their skins has caused a great deal of tension.
