This is a powerful account of the Ku Klux Klan and terrorism in the South during Reconstruction. The majority of white southerners were determined to keep blacks in a condition of subservience and slavery. They achieved this by whippings, arson, murder, and rape. Blacks were driven off their land at the threat of death and their houses and land were stolen by thugs. The documents are compelling since this was a congressional investigation.
