While on Christmas vacation at a ski resort with his friends, Lasse expects only snowboarding and fun. What he doesn't expect is Marko, who draws Lasse in and stirs feelings he never expected, feelings that Lasse is nevertheless more than happy to go along with. Love is never easy though, and the fact that Marko is from another country is only one of the complications. After a day on the slopes, Lasse gets into a confrontation with a man named Armas who won't take no for an answer. Coming to Lasse' rescue is Markos, Armas' brother and fellow vacationer. Markos and Lasse are instantly attracted to each other and spend the rest of the vacation together. But Markos is Finnish, and the vacation is coming to an end. The stress of a long-distance relationship is only one of the tests their love comes under as Markos and Lasse struggle to keep their winter love alive. Upon finishing the story, I wondered why I found it so dissatisfying. On the surface, the story is plausible and well constructed, the characters of Lasse and Markos likable. Further reflection crystallized several problems I had with Winter Love. The first is characterization or the lack thereof. All of the characters here are so bland as to be interchangeable, with the exception of the group slut, Oliver, and homophobe Armas, who sleeps with men. Otherwise, you can switch out Markos, Lasse, Dimitri, and Mathias with each other based on personality alone and no one would notice. It's just one note character after another. When glimmers of depth or layering comes up, or when we think that a backstory is about to be discovered, it is either immediately forgotten or dropped. These lapses in character and story development are so frustrating that the reader is tempted to skipped ahead to see if it (whatever it is) comes up again. And of course, it doesn't. At one point, Oliver is described as being bitter, which would give meaning to his promiscous behavior but it is never mentioned again. Also during the epilogue, Lasse wonders if he should bring up his past as a alcoholic and drug addict to Markos' parents and the reader starts going "what? what?" because this is the first mention of this side of Lasse' character. Had we had a backstory on Lasse earlier, it would have made him a more relatable person, instead we have a bland personality masquerading as a main character. Plot lines within the story are handled with the same nonchalance as character development. A major character in one of the main story lines threatens suicide because of a trauma that has driven a major section of the plot. He then disappears for the rest of the book, leaving the reader to wonder why this character was introduced at all if he could be so easily discarded. Also disturbing is the manner in which the potential for suicide is treated by the other characters. One singular moment of tears then nothing. T. T. Kove is Norwegian so the thought did occur to me that some of the issues I had with the story might be due to translation or language difficulties. Also, I have not read any Norwegian fiction so perhaps story development or plot outlines diverge along cultural lines. I am not sure. I would like to give her the benefit of the doubt, rather than using Winter Love as a standard for her prowess as a writer. Cover: Beautiful cover by Megan Derr. I loved the image but wish the author's name could be more legible. A larger font in the same color as the title would have been better.

I must admit that at first glance this story sounded very appealing to me. Vacation love, different setting and snowboarding? Well, yeah, bring it on. However, as I started reading, it didn’t take me long to change my mind. Lasse and Marko meet at a ski resort, where Marko came with his brother and friend, their respected girlfriends and Kira who you can say had a ‘hard on’ for Marko despite her being a woman. Lasse is there with his friends who are all gay and have some suppressed feelings of their own. At first Lasse is attracted to Marko’s brother who thinks he’s irresistible and doesn’t always take no for an answer. Only after Marko rescues him from the said brother does their passions ignite and they start on a journey to their happily ever after. The first thing I didn’t like about this story was the overall writing. It wasn’t necessarily bad, it just felt awkward to me and while I can appreciate it to an extent considering neither of the characters was a native English speaker, it still pulled me out of the story more than once and I just couldn’t get used to it. The first part was better, while everything was still developing between the guys and there was a certain dose of anticipation to it, but as soon as Lasse and Marko got together for the first time, all these situations I didn’t care for started happening. The sex was pretty reckless and didn’t suit either of their personalities and in addition it rushed the whole story. There are several jumps from the ski resort to visiting each other and so on, that interrupt the story and leave all the interesting information leading to that happily ever after unsaid. There was this whole ‘gay’ issue that didn’t sit well with me, both concerning Marko as well as his brother, and the resolution left a lot unsaid, especially when it comes to the brother Armas. There probably will be a second story, maybe even a third, if the hinted love stories were anything to go by, but unless they have more focus on single issues without just mentioning bits of everything, I don’t think I’ll go there.

But, Lasse is from Norway and Marco is from Finland and Marco’s brother (Armas) is hostile towards them. Can Lasse and Marco make it work or will distance and Armas keep them separated? This is a lovely little novella that warms your heart. Lasse and Marco meet and are attracted to each other. They get to know each other and begin to fall in love, but Armas is against them being together and then they have the problem of distance when they go home. They make plans and things seem to be going well, but then a drunken Armas confesses secrets to Lasse. Marco and Lasse are a really cute couple and they hit it off really well after Marco comes to Lasse’s rescue. While this story of love is sweet and gentle towards Lasse and Marco, it has some darker undertones from Armas. His past leads to him acting like he does and it has an impact on both Lasse and Marco who try to handle the revelations with support towards Armas. Lasse’s friends are great and Marco’s family as well, who welcome Lasse with open arms. The sex between Lasse and Marco is a mix between passionate and loving and doesn’t let you down as you can nearly feel the lust and love that it is infused with. With this one I will recommend this to those who love gentle love, overcoming distance and different countries, hot sex and a very happy ending. P.S. I am hoping Armas’s story is next as he really needs a happy ending.

A fun sweet read. I liked getting to know Marko and Lasse and seeing their budding relationship. It was a bit weird for me seeing some of the things being revealed about Armas is the same stuff that is revealed in Sakura Kiss but that's my fault for reading them out of order (which you don't have to do). Lasse and Marko were sweet! I like reading about different countries and the way they say I love you! ♡ But there were so many issues left open! What about Marko's brother? What about Lasse's friends? There was no closure! :( ETA: just found out that there is a sequel. Ah! Lasse and Marko were sweet! What I loved about it was the feeling of recognition. I have been to Norway, I have been to Helsinki. I have actually been to the club Lost & Found. And yes, Finnish is weird (apology to all Finnish GR members!). And Norwegian men are cute, generally speaking of course
