They live in a previous nunnery which has a leaky roof, invasive blackberry plants, mould in the basement -which she had planned on renovating but gave up doing as she gave up architecture for many years. A succession of several miscarriages & a final successful pregnancy which produces a baby girl Bee, with congenital heart disease that requires several surgeries, will lead to a close bond between mother and child, but a deteriorating relation with her husband which culminates in his having a 1 nightstand with his "admin"who becomes pregnant & his becoming convinced that Bernadette needs to be committed to a psychiatric institute due to her peculiar behaviour which includes depression, social shunning, taking drugs, falling asleep in a pharmacy, and destroying her hated neighbor's house with a mudslide caused by removing blackberry bushes that stabilized the slope(albeit at her neighbor's request). Bernadette disappears before being committed, during a voyage to Antarctica which was supposed to be with her daughter & husband initially. They go on a search for her at the instigation of Bee, and ultimately find her, now transformed & back to normal as a result of her finding her purpose in life again, when she takes on a project to build an Antarctic station. The family is reunited & reconciled.
