I won this book in a giveaway and received a paperback copy. I did’t know what to expect from this very small novel. I only contains 30 pages. So I was very curious about such a short story. The cover isn’t very spectaculair. I had forgotten the book quite soon. So I didn’t really have the urge to pick it up any. Eventually I was like. I should definitely read this sometime, it only 30 pages. So that how I ended up reading it anyway. Besides the story is quite strange. Strange in a good way though. There was a lot of humor in the book. That was great, it kept me smiling all the way to the ending. I was quite surprised about the bog elves. The seem like such magical creatures. Having the same interests as human creatures. I really liked the idea of the story, the mystery and the landscape. But I was quite disappointed. The story was amazing, but it should have been written with more details. The magical creatures should have more of a history. But not only that. The landscapes should have been better. There was nog time to imagine anything. The story was going so fast. I had no time to fantasize about the land, the creatures or the characters. This could be an entire book. It a shame it didn’t became one. But besides these marks. I still give it a 3 out of 5. It is a good short story, but not one of my favorites.

Doctor Edmund Huntsfee's Perilous Expedition into the Heart of the Flood Plains by Diana Parparita is a short fantasy travelogue of a small quixotic band in search of the elusive bog elf. Told in Dr. Humtsfee's slightly pompous point of view, this novella provides a teasing glimpse into the "scientific" viewpoint of a steampunk world. What happens when those who are used to a finer things of life find themselves traipsing through the mud in search of a "myth'? Mythology and fantasy; elves and rusalki; steam engine and great landscapes, British Victorian era with a slight Chekhovian perfume, explorers and scientific researchers, you have them all. All of these are spiced with the finest humor, originality and well-sketched characters. You’ll find great descriptions of the bog-elves and of their habitat and a delicious confrontation between the alluring rusalki and the well-determined Victorian ladies. The author kindly sent me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I don't think I stopped smiling at any stage during reading this story. I'm still smiling now! Ms. Parparita has taken the best of Conan Doyle and Jules Verne and has... I was going to say "brought that style back to life" but she has achieved far more than that - "Doctor Edmund Huntsfee's Perilous Expedition into the Heart of the Flood Plains" is pure genius!
