This book is a revelation. Leblon gave me a much broader view of gypsy history than I'd previously seen, but he also included specific information about gypsy origins which was fascinating. Then he discusses the origins of flamenco. I hadn't known that "flamenco" actually means Belgian in Spanish. Why would a form of music and dance in Spain that didn't evolve in Belgium be called "flamenco"? The reason has to do with the history of Spanish gypsies. Stylistically, this is a dry book. Why would a form of music and dance in Spain that didn't evolve in Belgium be called "flamenco"? The reason has to do with the history of Spanish gypsies. Stylistically, this is a dry book. It is a scholarly historical text filled with facts. I found them interesting facts, but there are no colorful descriptions. There are a few anecdotes. There is also a section of 200 gypsy flamenco artists that I skimmed. I think that section would be of more interest to a specialist than a general reader. I personally had no problem with the style because I am accustomed to scholarly historical texts, but other readers who are accustomed to popular history written in a more novelistic style may be disappointed.
