I read this little book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down! This is a collection of poems, interspersed with prose written by actor Kirk Douglas. Here, Mr. Douglas provides the reader with a view into his early beginnings in New York, his first plays and films, notable friends and his one great love, Anne. As of its writing, Mr. Douglas was 98 years old and had been married to his wife for over 60 years. Mr. Douglas provides wonderful glimpses of love, family, his struggle to regain the power of speech, life and courage. I had never read anything written by Mr. Douglas before and I really enjoyed getting to know a little more about the man behind the silver screen. His is a story of simple beginnings, struggle and triumph. I humbly thank him for writing such a wonderful book and sharing a little of his story with readers.

I remember growing up watching Kirk in films, as a young girl I think I fell a little in love with him. After reading this little book, now I am sure I love this man. The story of his love for his wife and family touches me deeply. A wonderful read.

I was a lucky winner of this book from goodreads and was pleasantly surprised by the serendipitous mixture of narrative, pictures and verse arranged by the author. The depth and breadth of his experiences, the wonderful photos and heartfelt verse made this short book, a joy to read, and most likely, read again and again. The book itself is attractive. The paper and photo quality surprising good. All in all, I can heartily recommend Kirk Douglas' book to anyone interested in learning "not so common" knowledge about him and many of his famous contemporary actors and actresses.

I read this book purely for the novelty of it - a famous actor writing poetry? Who doesn't want to know what THAT sounds like? And let's be honest - I don't expect him to be a contender for Poet Laureate any time soon. But the poems are sweet and heartfelt, and each carries with it a snapshot of what has been a fantastically complex and interesting life. My only real complaint is that I wish the book had been longer - Douglas comes across as warm and funny, and I would have enjoyed hearing more I read this book purely for the novelty of it - a famous actor writing poetry? Recommended for Kirk Douglas fans or Hollywood fans. (I received a copy of this from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.)

I won this book in a good reads giveaway. I did not know much about Kirk other than the roles he has played. When I first won it I thought it was just a book of poetry. What I got was different, it was a story of a successful man and how his life played out. His poetry is nothing to write home about but it is simple and beautiful. A very gifted man, had what in my opinion was a wonderful life. If you are a Kirk Douglas fan, this is a great book to own. Picked this up from the library when I was on Kirk Douglas kick (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Spartacus, etc.). It's basically a brief autobiography, complete with lots of pictures and lots of name-dropping and some cutesy poems Douglas wrote throughout the years, and is not particularly moving, but it's always fun to get a glimpse of old Hollywood. Kirk Douglas has been writing poetry all his life, about things that he cares about, and here collects some of them. The poems are sheer doggerel, but the stories that introduce them are sincere and beautiful. Altogether a quite charming little book.
