A copy of "Charlie Palmer's American Fare" arrived at our door as we were sitting down to dinner this evening. As soon as we finished eating, my husband and father-in-law began looking through this beautiful cookbook. Each of them immediate selected several recipes they want to try. My father-in-law is famous for his pound cake. He was surprised and delighted to discover that Charlie Palmer's "Hazelnut Pound Cake" recipe is practically identical to his own recipe. Fantastic cookbook filled with a wide variety of simple yet tasty everyday meals to a few more expansive "company's coming" style dishes (see the smoked honeyed turkey recipe!) to experiment and impressive with. Lots of great dishes that our family will be going back to and working into our dinner line-ups. Also very nicely illustrated and very well written, making it great just to pick up and peruse for inspiration. I enjoyed Charlie Palmers cookbook. It will be a great book to use when I need to make something for the picky eater. It has a lot of recipes that are a little bit fancy but still recognizable for the meat and potato crowd. I am excited to try several recipes including the Brussels sprouts au gratin and the pork chops. The recipes had a little too much cream and dairy for my liking but overall, the recipes seem easy enough to do on a weeknight.

Probably one of the most satisfying books I've bought on American cooking. Incredibly well designed recipes and flavors, just makes studying the ingredient lists a joy, like one of Ruth Reichl's books. I cannot rate a cooking book before months if it is great, or at least weeks if not so great. That is why I will start with 3 stars, knowing I will come back to this page and adapt the stars to the results... I've noted 4 or 5 cooking books in my life. One was from Michel Guerard, # stars Michelin, when he opened a hotel and restaurant in Emilie-les-Bains, if I remember well, to enable people to ea sumptuous meals with less than 1000 calories for all, and often less than 600. One was from Michel Guerard, # stars Michelin, when he opened a hotel and restaurant in Emilie-les-Bains, if I remember well, to enable people to ea sumptuous meals with less than 1000 calories for all, and often less than 600. A great book, proving you can save on fat and sugar, while maintaining the standards people expect in a luxury restaurant. A wonderful and easy book, if you could not find langoustines, do it with shrimps, it will work almost as well and such comments were all along in the book. Meaning you could go to the market and find something that would enable you to do the recipes. In the same kind, I have had he most wonderful Chinese book, where the author described a sauce almost impossible to make, because the proper ingredients were not here. He told people to replace the main one by an empty vegetable can, pour sugar and vinegar in, and heat in with anything from the toolbox which could hold it fest. We made beef with onions worth of a Chinese restaurant in half an hour, sweet and sour pork better than in most restaurants, etc... Them I wa given a book about seafood. Ultimate catastrophe! Roger Verges, who told you you must cook with fresh, fresh and fresher products. Yes, but even by the sea, fresh fish is so expensive, or is not here, or are already be reserved for restaurants. Not a good one for normal people. Then, I got the book from the Heaberlin in Illhausern, Alsatian food which was wonderful if you could find the game meat or the sweet water fish. The meat, I had some hunter friends who would sell it to me at a decent price, the fish, I never managed. Now, I received from GR an ARC of Charlie's American fare. Worth trying. I'll have to see if you can get the necessary ingredients, but only after can I give a real mark... Ill tell you

Full of wonderful photos and descriptive recipes, this book is for anyone looking to make a tasty and well-presented dish. It's a cookbook, so I didn't exactly read it cover to cover, but I read over many recipes that I intend to try and they all look amazing. Of course in some areas, especially rural ones, some of the ingredients might be hard to get, but most of the ingredients should be easily available.
