This did not work, but not for the usual reasons although they are all still there: mean, hairy hero (excuse me, Popeye the One-eyed Hero with an eyepatch lol), an overly forgiving heroine, know-it-all hero on a ranch, an off-page OW that puts out. You know, the regular DP drill. Nope, what got me on this one is the evil W, no OW as she's the H's sister, is the evil doer here. Best friends since she and the h were kids she stabs the h in the back more than once. Insta-forgiveness of course. One, we need to see the OW, and SHE is supposed to be the snide, lying conniving bitch. Best friends are, or should be, off limits. And I forgot two. Barf. Oh yeah, two, the heroine was a little catty and judgey over the OW who probably had no idea she even existed.

Hero’s sister has a gambling boyfriend who is only dating her for her money. He flirts with the h and lil’ sis is jealous. She tells the hero that she saw heroine and her bf making out. Hero insults heroine in front of the whole town. Result: (view spoiler)[ Heartbroken heroine moves to Dallas after graduation. It’s a good thing heroine is getting married and not staying in the classroom. She’s such a doormat those kids would eat her alive. Diana Palmer checklist: Hairy chest Is there any other kind? He plays hot and cold with her. There are some funny lines in the book between the two of them and he was dating a woman named Glenna in the book. The heroine had this to say about her, “Her name is written in so many phone booths, she could qualify as a tourist attraction!”! I loved that line. It is hysterical. But I digress. So for years they have been dancing around each other and loads of sexual tension. He says at one point he says, “I haven’t had sex for so long, I’m not even sure I remember how.” but then he is dating the tarty tart woman so I am not sure if he has been celibate or not. I think he has but who knows. He loves the heroine of course and she adores his eye patch and hairy chest. Did I mention that he had only one eye? I caught myself laughing a couple of times about the look in his 'eye' which was not really nice but it just sounded so weird. The sister is a mess and gets jealous of the h because her slutty wannabe boyfriend is flirting with her and so she tell the hero that she saw them making out. The hero bans her from his land and their life. That was a really sad part for me. She has no one to watch her graduate from college because she is an orphan and he publicly calls her a tramp basically in the middle of the town and everyone hears it. She decides to move away and gets a new job. She is living there through the summer and the H is still an ass. He knows since the day the heroine left that she had never kissed the other guy but he didn't go after her. He did stop dating the tourist attraction Glenna though which was good and he lost weight. The heroine almost gets killed while trying to separate two teenagers from fighting and they H and his family all run to see her and tell her they love her. Of course they marry and have an HEA, all with his one eye and hairy chest and sexual moves. She remains a virgin until their wedding day but he does show her what will happen when they finally do get married. There is the DP deflowering scene on their honeymoon in Cancun and they ride off into the sunset. Just a strange book all the way around. I used to love Diane Palmers but this one kind of got to me. Maybe because I am reading it as a mature adult and not a 17 year old girl! LOL. Oh how times have changed. So if you like hairy, one eyed, commitment phobic heroes, this one is for you!!!

Natalie is a cliché: orphan, poor, not too pretty (but god forbid she'd be ugly) And how come the virgin is always best friend with the village slut?! This had all the hallmarks of a traditional Diana Palmer - experienced, older, authoratative man, completely innocent and naive girl. Though the book is 12 years old, that doesn't play well anymore for most people. Except that she doesn't hold completely to this formula. Yes, he's got the experience and she doesn't, but she's not totally naive and he's fighting what he's wanted for years. For one thing, she's not scared of him. He is very attracted to her but feels that coming with the ready made family of his younger siblings is too much a burden for a young woman. When his sister, in a jealous rage, drives a wedge between them, Mack is forced to face a life without Natalie and discovers it isn't a life he wants to live. As for Natalie, she proves she can do it, have a life and career without Mack and his family, but she doesn't want to. It's sweet and sexy and an easy read.

Natalie is a true innocent when it comes to romance and men, but when it comes to life and knowing what's important she has wisdom in abundance. She's been in love with her best friend Vivian's brother since she was a teenager. Mack's always had a special place in his life for Natalie, even knowing that Natalie loves him, he can't bring himself to make a life with her. He's vowed never to marry, and because of that he's constantly battling his desires. He has promised Natalie that when the time was right he'd be the one to show her what love making was all about. And now she's 22 and slowly he's awakening her desire and he's awakening feelings in himself that he doesn't want. But something happens and Vivian is certain that Natalie has betrayed their trust, and Mack pushes Natalie away, forbidding her to ever set foot on their ranch again. As mentioned, this is a very emotional story. The bond between Mack and Natalie is a deep one that grows as Natalie matures. In Mack we see a brooding hero who's duty to raising his sister and brothers makes him a loner. While Natalie is a spirited woman who knows instinctively how to make the world right for others around her. Ms. Palmer brought these two to life. Their story grabs the heart and holds on.

I should have loved it. Virginal heroine, ranch owning alpha male hero, it had all the makings of a favorite. It was a major disappointment. If it weren’t so short I probably wouldn’t have finished it. Other than mentioning he owed a ranch there was no “cowboy” flavor to the book. I totally don’t understand the desire to mention over and over that he has an eye patch. Being a virgin doesn’t mean you have to be a clueless idiot. And the hero was a jack ass. Seriously, skip it.

Classic This was the first romance novel I ever read as a teenager. Harlequin had sent two free books for a subscription service and this was one of the ones we received. I must have read this book 30 times over the years. However, as my tastes evolved I stopped returning to this book. Well, I reread it today after a 10 year break. It was such a nostalgic read. I’ll always be grateful to this book and Diana Palmer for sparking my love for romance novels.

A good story with great characters. Natalie has loved Mack for years, but did nothing about it. If I'm completely honest, this book only got a four because of nostalgic value. It's a cute story, but the writing and dialogue is kind of amateurish and almost not believable. The story follows Natalie Brock as she wraps up the last of her education to become a school teacher, but most of the focus is of course on the tension between her and Mack, the man who she has known most of her life. Other things go on, but the story centers around this main conflict and since the book is short, almost anything else is summarized in a few paragraphs. If you're a Diana Palmer fan, you'll probably enjoy the book (a few fans note that her books have many similarities), but I probably won't be particularly eager to pick up another novel.

This is my favorite Diana Palmer. For the most part if you've read one of Diana Palmer's books, you've read them all. They all seem to be based on the same theme. A young, sweet innocent girl is in love with an older, possesive, experienced man. Most of her books can be read in an hour, or two, so they make good quick reads. This is my favorite Diana Palmer.
