Love it! Examples are easy to follow. The use of syllables to pronounce the words in Spanish is very helpful. Also, the pictures give you an idea of the application of the phrases.

I think what would have made this book better is if it came with a disk to hear the pronunciation of the words.

"Spanish Reader For Beginners" and a companion book, "Spanish Phrases for Beginners", both by Elliot Carruthers, are cute books that present short Spanish phrases with their English translations. The "hook" here is the little cartoons that accompany each phrase or sentence. In Spanish Reader (this book), the cartoons are very simple and somewhat repetitive, but they get the point across. I found that with the visual help, I could frequently ascertain/guess the English translation, but had trouble "Spanish Reader For Beginners" and a companion book, "Spanish Phrases for Beginners", both by Elliot Carruthers, are cute books that present short Spanish phrases with their English translations. I found that with the visual help, I could frequently ascertain/guess the English translation, but had trouble remembering the Spanish version when going the other way. Not the author's fault, just the way my mind works (or fails to). The reader won't learn any heavy Spanish, but the book title does say "for Beginners". And it mostly worked for this beginner. 2.5 stars.

"Spanish for Beginners" by Elliot Carruthers which I won through Goodreads/First Reads is a delightful and innovative introduction to Spanish phrases. Although the book is short in length the cartoon illustrations are original, humorous and very relevant. As the title suggests this is a excellent instructive guide for beginners especially children loaded with everyday phrases that are very useful. I recommend it to anyone just learning Spanish. Would be a fun book to have in the classroom to help non Spanish speakers learn some quick/easy phrases. Provides english phrase, then Spanish phrase, then child friendly pronunciation. Ex: Fire! ¬°fuego! Fway-go I received this free from goodreads book giveaway

I get what he was trying to do, but it didn't click with me. Not a bad read, just not helpful to me. I get what he was trying to do, but it didn't click with me. Not a bad read, just not helpful to me.
