This is not in any way a bad book, and if you want an analysis of the appeal of Henry Ainley, Lily Elsie, Ivor Novello or Gerald du Maurier alongside much better known 'matinee idols', this is for you. However, for me it was marred by a chapter on psychoanalysis and hero worship that is extremely offensive to gay people and mildly offensive to anyone else who has favourite stars of whatever period. This makes the book very much of its time.
