This really reminded me of Colette Baron-Reid's Journey Through the Chakras, especially with the "pop" song for the closing track. Here are some of the lyrics: "Change will take you fast and far. Keep following the brightest star. Change will take you far. Honor who you are." Now, there is some good to be had from this CD, but the last track with its simple rhymes and repetitive melody is kind of childish and silly. Pert is at her strongest during the guided meditation track or the affirmations. Honestly, I would have rated this three stars instead of two if she had left off 'Honor Who You Are.' It really sounds like elevator, new age, dental office/waiting room music. Psychosomatic Wellness is ok otherwise. I would highly recommend Kelly Howell or the Monroe Institute for music to heal and transform above and beyond the last track of this recording.

Not 3 stars. A mere 3-star book wouldn't have tugged at me after I finished it, so I had to check it out from the library again, and consider purchasing the book. Not 5 stars. A 5-star book should be near-flawless, or so treasured that it seems near-flawless. So, 4 stars for Psychosomatic Wellness. What, you may ask, are the flaws? I'm not going to list them because I don't want to ruin the experience for other listeners. You might not notice any problems, or maybe you'll catch some that I didn't Not 3 stars. I'm not going to list them because I don't want to ruin the experience for other listeners. You might not notice any problems, or maybe you'll catch some that I didn't hear. I suspect it's impossible for any guided meditation to be perfect for every listener, any more than every printing of every book can be without typographical error. Having once worked as a copy editor, I see (or in the case of audiobooks, hear) anything I conceive as an error circled in red pencil. The minor flaws in a guided meditation stand out even more than minor flaws in other books. As I listen and re-listen, my solution is to go ahead and make my own personal revisions. It seems like I insert those inner marginalia in every listen. Sometimes I've drifted into sleep or near-sleep, and in the first few readings an error I see as glaring will yank me back into my critical consciousness. But after several listens, I'll just kinda nod my head and say to myself, oh yeah, there's that flaw... and I move right along, the error having become only a tiny ripple scarcely disturbing the narrative flow. My copy of Psychosomatic Wellness has fewer marginalia than most meditations. It flows well and helps me get rejuvenating rest. It won't cure incurable disease, but it can increase my comfort and energy. The music bed supports the narration without distracting. This is great, because a guided meditation with a distracting music bed is pretty useless to me, while a guided meditation with no music bed tends to have dropouts that will snap my eyes open as I check to see if the program stopped or my player battery died or what. I actually like the little pop song at the end. Its simple rhymes help the affirmations remain in my memory, so that I've found myself confronting negative thoughts or triggers with a reminder to myself to "honor who you are; honor who you are becoming." Speaking of triggers, here's one warning. If you're a survivor of abuse, you may not respond completely positively to a suggestion that you forgive. You've probably had to confront the idea of forgiveness, before now, and make your own marginalia that get you through anything from the Lord's Prayer to quotes from Gandhi. Just know that it's in there. Forgiveness. Have your own concept ready in your mind, to moderate or substitute, as needed.

I've done hundreds of guided visualizations, and I must say this one is very effective at getting me quickly into a relaxed, healing state. The affirmations that follow are ok -- at this point I usually fall asleep (which is otherwise very hard for me to do). Then to close, the cheesy song blasts me awake and I curse not remembering to play the meditation track only. I think it's a friend who does the song. It's awful. I think it'd be ok for a 3-year-old's record, but not here.
