I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book when I started reading it. It didn’t ‘click’ with me right away, like some books do. That bothered me because I liked the first Thaddeus Murfee book. But it got better fast and I tore through it. There aren’t many twists in the plot – it’s a mostly straightforward A to B to C deal – but there are moles in both the good guys’ and bad guys’ camps to add to the tension. The body count is also pretty high for a legal thriller. And Thad’s love life is a soap I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book when I started reading it. My only beef is suddenly Thad is loaded with money (from successful lawsuits) and can spend it profligately and does. I always find that aspect of a character hard to buy into. I’m looking forward to where Ellsworth takes Thad next.

Protagonist is the smartest man in the world. Oh no! The author wasn't clear how the main character enraged Bang Bang, the evil one. He took liberties with the procedures that were less than entertaining, and mislead the reader. It reads like a YA novel. Protagonist is the smartest man in the world. Oh no! Thaddeus, invincible Again, Thaddeus is smart enough to stay alive and get extremely rich. His character is so likeable, but I was disappointed when he met up with Katy. This seemed so unfair to his hometown honey Ilene. How will Thaddeus handle fatherhood? He is a hot mess now and playing with fire!

FANTASTIC READ(S)!!! John Ellsworth may have just become my new favorite author! (Sorry John G.) I just now finished BEYOND A REASONABLE DEATH right after having purchased and read THE DEFENDANT a few days ago. I am excited to see that there's another book by this author just waiting for me to "One Click Purchase" after I've written my review. (ATTORNEY AT LARGE, here I come!) The books are excellent reads that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good legal thriller (that doesn't get TOO bogged down with more legalese than my little pea-brain is interested in absorbing). Both of these books hooked me right from the very beginning all the way through to the very last pages. The story is fast-paced, with twists and turns that kept me wanting to read more. I don't write reviews very often and I often worry that I don't know how to write the review well enough to do the book and the author justice...BUT, when the book has given me exactly what I look for when I want to "curl up with a good book" and allows me to "escape" for a while, I want to try to say "thanks" to the writer and, hopefully, encourage another reader who enjoys this genre to pick up the book I've just finished and enjoyed tremendously. I hope that my "two cents" here has accomplished the effort. Happy Reading!

This legal thriller is the story of a very young lawyer in a small town who crosses the mob. They send a hit man after him. Trying to break free, he sues them, and a courtroom drama ensues. Very quickly he learns you don’t sue the mob and go back to normal living. He is pursued relentlessly and runs west to the mountains of Arizona, where he seeks refuge with a Navajo shepherd. He sets up his office in a cabin while he pursues his case against the godfather. The shepherd has many lessons for Thaddeus Murfee—lessons about surviving when all odds are against you. Together they face the first mob soldier sent after Thaddeus. Plus…the old shepherd has a granddaughter who attends medical school. Katy teaches him to fly-fish, and romance blossoms. Then, he has pursued again and must abandon her in this powerful crime fiction. Set in Chicago, Mexico, and Arizona, Thaddeus is hunted. He must battle wealthy lawyers who seek to protect the mobsters. Thaddeus takes his case to trial with astounding results. What did I like? Well, I fell in love with Thaddeus in the first book and he just keeps, getting better and better. Who would have ever thought to sue the MOB??? I mean it takes it outside the realm of what you could even think about. Hey, if it works then that is what you do but at what price? What will you like? If you’re like me and like to think out of the box, then this is the book series for you. Thaddeus does things in the way that takes everything a step further and for him, it works. There is plenty of legal action, but it doesn’t stop there, he is chased, shot at, ends up in the mountains on a Navajo reservation and it just keeps going and going. Fast action, fast thinking and don’t stop and smell the roses will it be enough, just read on. Note: this is actually book three in the series even though it is listed as number 2... Had me confused for a while but after doing some serious checking I found a beginning book on Thaddeus that is not numbered.

The Title Does Make Sense A daughter who wants back in her father's good graces, to finally be loved by him, has a plan. It involves a happily married gay man. An unexpected murder. The return of SAIC Pepper, who helped Thaddeus in the last book, who turns out not to be so bad at all, despite her demeanor in the last book. I must admit I am confused a bit by the book description, but that's just me, I guess. This is another in the ever growing bibliography of John Ellsworth. He tautly writes legal thrillers full to bursting, high octane excitement. The protagonist in this book is a 27 year old, wet behind the ears, baby lawyer. Meaning with no preconceived notions on how to litigate the "proper" way. This is no different. Although he has taken a partner in Chicago to sue a particular brand of bad doctors, and is becoming rather good at it, Thaddeus still has a lot to learn. However with the Don of the mafia and a price of $1.5 million on his head, when he finds a incredible place to hide, he then has almost nothing to do but learn. Reading a Thaddeus Murfee book is almost a primer on how not to practice law, recovering from your mistakes and fighting a good fight. This is no exception. The reader learns a lot of other useful tidbits - don't run your car at extremely high speed with your air conditioning on in the desert, for example. Or how to fly fish, then eat your catch as freshly as possible, so it melts in your mouth. So there is more here than the good guy up against the baddest of the bad. Which makes for some exciting, can't wait to see what comes next reading. Never dull. Oh, I forgot to add in a gleeful judge. Mr. Ellsworth has very quickly become my favorite legal thriller author. Highly recommended.

Constant action. Really good.... until the last few chapters. Not worth more of the series. Thaddeus Murfee is a high powered talented attorney who just happens to have a hit put out on him by the mob. This is my first time reading any of the series so I'm not familiar with the background. Thaddeus is awash in money but has this problem with wanting to stay alive. Well darn, now he has two women pregnant. Nothing like sowing your seeds everywhere then leaving a trail of fatherless children behind. Although I liked Thad for most of the book, this made me decide I has no more time for such a worthless man. There are decent heroes to be read so this type of scum isn't worth the bother.

Fast Paced & Intriguing Beyond a Reasonable Death is a thrilling book. When my Kindle hit the 40% mark I had to think back to the beginning of the book. I enjoyed the first meeting of the Navajo Shepherd. He makes an appearance in Flagstaff Station and I really like his character. I am excited to continue the series.

Interesting, fun read but needs a thorough edit. The plot moves at a good pace, it's easy to connect with the characters, and legal moves and solutions are definite highlights. However, it's a stretch to believe (spoiler alert) that the protagonist could defeat a concerted effort by the mob--but, of course, it's fun to see the everyman underdog come out on top. Three's The Charm! This is my third Thaddeus Murfee novel. The first two definitely hooked me. I expected this one to be just as good but it turned out to be the best so far. There is no down time in reading this book. Something is happening every minute. Please start at the first novel as these stories build on each other. The characters in the stories are well defined and are easy to carry over from novel to novel. Time to get my Kindel and see what follows next. I read my westerns on my Kindel Three's The Charm! A good follow on to Book 2. Worth reading! This is the 3rd Thaddeus Murfee book in the series and the 3rd I’ve read. These sequence books need to be read in correct order as each gives away much of the plot of the earlier ones. Thaddeus is an interesting character and Mr. Ellsworth does a good job of making him real. The plots are somewhat far fetched but entertaining and who knows, maybe possible if not very probable. I intend to read the entire collection. They are fun and suspenseful.

Okay, But Not His Best If I had read these in order, I might have gone no further. The story was good. However, something was lacking. It can't be that easy to obtain ownership of millions! Everything just falls in his lap. Even with his personal life. None of your attorneys can be faithful to anyone. Yet no hard feelings ever. And right out of the gate, 2 illegitimate children. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. This is the 2and book in the Thaddeus Murfee series and it was a great story. The story picks up from where the Last book ended. Thad is on the run from the Chicago Mob. Thad has to use his tremendous legal powers to save his life and the people around him. The story takes you from Southern Illinois to Chicago to Vegas to Sacred Indian land in Arizona and even Mexico. The story was so good I couldn't put the book down and the ending was awesome and left me anxious to read the next chapter. Thaddeus books These books keep getting better and better. I read the first in this series and found the dialogue and character development stilted and unrealistic; however, the story kept my interest. I am critical of spelling and typo errors, so the next book irked me for that reason. This most recent book pleased me immensely. The author has honed his craft and the editing has become more efficient. I am anxious to begin the next story.

This book is quite suspenseful. Not only is this a solid legal thriller, the writing is very good. I appreciate descriptions of things like scenery, towns, people. I didn't know how much more I could take at times, the tension was so high. Thaddeus has a knack for attracting trouble, certainly, but he's adept at getting out of in just in time. This on was an improvement over the first To me the first book’s plot didn’t hold up very well logically, and I didn’t like the Perry Mason ending of an unnecessary (except to the plot) confession on the stand. This one held together better and the characters, at least on the good guy side, were a lot more interesting. It is a fun read, although the hero’s virility is still a bit on the unbelievable side!

extremely addictive! thaddeus is a lawyer who is definitely on the rise. He also is a lawyer who is marked by the mob! You definitely need to read this to see how he retaliates. Not in a manner that you would expect! along the way, he finds himself in a extremely difficult life situation. He has some difficult decisions to make, his decisions will affect the lives of others. Definitely, extremely interesting and suspenseful!

SO FAR THE BEST OF THREE Ok, this is the third of Ellsworth’s Murfee saga that I have read. The first was so badly written that it was hard to finish! The second one was much better and this one makes me want to read more of Ellsworth writing. The court scenes appear unrealistic and naive but the story is fun, !

Very good read Enjoyed the book. It is very interesting how lawyers act very often (almost every time) in their own self interests. Reader feels a rapport with the character as he escapes from the bad guys. How the main character tries to reconcile two love interest, makes for interesting reading. Only negative is that the main character seems overly greedy. Recommend

I have read the other books in the series and this one didn't disappoint. What I have noticed is how much Thaddeus has learnt, not only in the courtroom but how to kill his would be assain. He is left with a moral dilemma at the end of the book so I have downloaded the next one to see the outcome but reading in between the lines, I have a fair idea as to his choice. Another engaging story that’s got me into it already. Time for a criticism, Ellsworth really, Police returning a stolen vehicle to a perp?.?.? I don’t think they would do that, but who knows, I didn’t think the court would allow a deposition conducted in a foreign country, but I looked it up and sure enough. Anyway great read all the way, I highly recommend. 5

This was a slow go for me. A lot that was not believable and characters that have no depth. I don’t think a bodyguard company would be around if they just pulled up shop and left their client empty. The best character was Henry. Why it got 3 stars and not 2: cheap, quick, and there was some good suspense.

Implausible No spoilers: After the first book I was looking forward to a new series. This book has sadly put me off. There are enough good bits to keep me going to the end but for me the story is just far too implausible. I do need to be able to relate, even just a little, to a character.. and I need events to be believable. This book failed for me.
