    Much of the tone was off-putting and how many times did you have to reassure the reader that you, of course, wouldn't believe anything so ridiculous? BUT . . . the insight into Jesus' life and his example of complete egalitarianism was astounding. There are several quotes I loved, but it really boils down to this one: "The mission [of Jesus] . . . is not, like Paul's, a dramatic thrust along major trade routes to urban centers hundreds of miles apart. Yet it concerns the longest journey in the Greco-Roman world, maybe in any world - the step across the threshold of a peasant stranger's home." (121) I still think the longest journey in the world is to let the stranger, the outcast, the marginalized, cross our threshold (or cross their's) as if we were all welcome like friends. That is the real challenge of Christianity, so in that Crossan's work was enlightening.
