Th Author Mike Johnson is an expert in human resource consulting. He has extensive experience working with leading companies, providing insights on talent management, and strategy implementation. This book was published in 2014. Many discussions in the book become ever more obvious now. The working environment of future decades will undergo major transformation. Mike draws on his comprehensive experience to give advice to readers. I think it's a very useful book. More people should try this out. The book will equip us with better awareness and adaptation in our professional career. As Mike writes in the book, a major problem for many people is they are not 'observing' the trends. World population is growing rapidly, but the job creation might not meet the demands. The working world's structure is transforming quickly due to technology. However, many people, especially young generation, don't have ideas how to cope with the new challenging environment. Therefore, I think it's fortunate for me to read this book because it provides me some essential knowledge for future works. Let me briefly introduce the concepts cover in the book. The table of contents follows. 1. The century of uncertainty Mike provides many evidence showing 21st century is full of uncertainties and risks. Unexpected things can emerge all of a sudden, so organizations need to keep alerted and respond to changes efficiently. That said, there are many obvious trends as well. If one could seize the opportunity, the potential could be high. 2. Seeking our job opportunities People used newspaper or trade magazine to find jobs just a few years ago. Nowadays, firms use social media like Linkedin to search talents. Moreover, networking is critical. Mike gives us some advice how to stand out among peers. 3. People, positions, and places People worked in concrete buildings all day. As technology advancing, it allows us new way to do works. For example, internet enables us to work at home. In the future, a combination of working methods or places will become mainstream. 4. What the workplace look like? The concepts are similar to the trendy 'shared offices'. Working offices would no longer be 'cold' but vibrant. Workplace becomes a place where you work and have fun. It would satisfy social needs, working efficiency, and many more functions. I feel very excited when reading this chapter. 5. Making career inside or outside organization? Traditionally, young graduates flock to multinational companies for secured career. This is changing because MNC may not fit these aspiring lads. Many prefer flexible working styles and better work-life balance. Mike gives advice on which direction we could choose. In fact, the sky is the limit. There are many choices awaiting the right candidate. He also sheds light on how organizations should do to find and retain bright employees. 6. Educate, educate, educate It's no news that employers think new graduates are not equipped with the right capability for real world. He discusses the current business school systems and its drawbacks. He lists several possible transformation that could revolutionize the whole system. But it's hard to implement anytime soon. Most of all, workers need to grasp the capability to 'teach yourself'. Others can't teach you, the best way is to rely on yourself. 7. Organizational challenges Mike mentions some current ubiquitous problem of organizations. Many firms are not doing properly regarding talent management or building a nice workplace. Some improvement is expected to greatly enhance performance. 8. The workplace of the future, or more the same? A recap of the above chapters. * This book is very approachable. The writing style is very friendly and interesting. It's ideal for everyone to learn more about work itself. It's a pleasure for me to read this book!
