This is an awesome book to read with lots of information to how curses work and how to receive blessings. If you suffer from some type of bondage or behavior that controls you, you might consider a deliverance ministry to remove the demonic strongholds (deliverance from demons) in your life. One of the joys of reading Derek's writings is the prevalence of the Holy Spirit and the inclusion of scriptural references and precepts for the edification of his reader. Although he was a scholar in his own right with an estimable academic pedigree, we encounter a man wholly reliant on the Lord and driven by His Word and dependency on the leadership of the Spirit for his well-being and sustenance. Knowing God did not prevent him from needing Him. His confidence was not in the knowledge he obtained, but in the One who wrest him from the darkened abyss where he once dwelt. As with most Old Testament subjects, the Christian interpretation has many elements ranging from uncertainty to replacement and the wholehearted conclusion of its inapplicability. In situations like these one wonders how the conclusions are drawn and if the suggestions of perpetual maintenance often mentioned by the Lord have acquired a different meaning in our modern age. Thankfully, Derek grabs the bull by the horn and candidly clears the air on a subject mired in silence and confusion. The bible is filled with multiple inferences of cause and effect. Right action begets a positive conclusion and its opposite brings a less desirable outcome. In regard to curses, he illustrates the concepts which breed their creation and continuity and those which yield the favorable blessings many seek. One of the clearest depictions of this principle is found in Proverbs. If one approaches the text utilizing the equation of "if and then" the outworking is easy to detect. The concluding prayers and proclamations are helpful tools for those unfamiliar with the practice or requiring assistance in applying the appropriate word to their situation. While many long to rest in the fullness of the blessings He proclaimed, we cannot ignore the ramifications of our rebellion and the difficulties it brings. Nevertheless, we have a clear resource which enables us each to stand before the Throne of Grace in humble submission, contrition, revocation, and repentance. These are the tenets for freedom along with our continued commitment to maintain that state and avoid further captivity. To do so we must acknowledge our besetting sins and desist in applying futile logic to God's holy writ.

I need to comment on this book because of the amount of harm it has done. Two of the most harmful deviations from Christianity are exposed in Derek Prince’s writing, and if I didn’t know that it has happened again and again over the centuries, I would say that he is the origin of the modern manifestation of this twisted version of Christian discipleship. First, I must point out that Prince is what I call a Jerusalemist. Jerusalemism is the mentality that Jerusalem lies at the center of the universe. It started when David moved the tabernacle from the holy places established by Moses and placed it in his own capitol city, thereby asserting his own ownership over God. From that point, David’s bloodline felt free to deviate from God’s covenant while still holding Him to His promise of blessing their nation. Religions have done this with their various deities for thousands of years, and it is done by almost every nation and empire in one form or another. And it never ends well. Second, and more to the point, Prince does not understand the nature of the demonic realm. Demons exist to do three things: deceive, condemn, and oppose. They deceive by leading mankind astray from the Truth. Then they condemn mankind for having gone astray. Then they oppose those who try to lead mankind back to the truth. Their opposition often comes in the guise of more condemnation—especially if they can deceive a large populous of people into thinking that the Truth is really a lie. Even Jesus could not avoid being condemned by those who had been deceived. In the first and second part of this book, Prince paints a hopeless picture of demonic curses lurking in every shadow and around every corner waiting to pounce on us and our children. All curses, he asserts, are the cause of sin by either ourselves or our ancestors. The situation seems pretty hopeless. Then he goes on to point out that even Christians, not being careful how they pray, can pray condemnation and curses on their own brethren when they pass undue judgment. Essentially, we are cursing ourselves. The Catholics are cursing the Protestants. The traditional worshipers are cursing those who sing loud songs of praise and wear their hair long. The Baptists are cursing those who don’t go to their particular church. Jerusalemists are cursing you for not pledging allegiance to Jerusalem. And the Amish especially are cursing you right now for reading this (using electricity to do so). When Prince eventually comes to the point, he provides a solution to the problem that is as much white witchcraft as the old “Claim it in faith, buy it on credit, make God pay the interest” prayer that I used to hear so much just before the housing market collapsed. At the same time, it is book-burning superstition at its worst. I, it would seem, am hopelessly cursed because I grew up in a town (not heard of at the time Prince wrote this book) that was heavily involved with the supernatural. I had many supernatural encounters (several in my own home) that I never went looking for. To understand what I was up against, I read books—books that Prince says cursed me for so much as touching. At one point, finding an obviously magical implement that had been placed in my possession, I consulted with a woman, a witch by contemporary Christian standards, to find out what the thing was and who might have snuck it into my house. I dared to go into dark places, and sometimes I got burned (literally) from the encounter. Unlike some Christians, I did not stick my head in a hole in the ground and hide my light from the world. To this day, I read up and study the things of this world so that I can better understand what kids today are talking about. I’ve played Pokemon and the Magic card game as a means of fellowship and an ice-breaker for deeper conversation; Prince would tell me to burn them since they contain images of creatures that might have been worshipped in ancient times. In fact, before I wrote Men of Renown, I studied both the science of dragons (being extinct creatures that were still on this earth in Biblical times) and the flood and monster myths of other cultures that Prince would condemn as delving into New Age religion. Sadly, when I released Men of Renown to the world, I was met with Princely opposition (condemnation) because my interpretation of the Earth in the days of Noah was “different—therefore wrong” by traditional theological standards. After reading this book, I did not burn anything in my house. Instead, I consecrated it. What I have on my bookshelves are there to serve God and to enable me to show Truth to the world. I have to assume Prince did the same with the resources he used to research spiritual warfare beyond what the Bible has to say on the subject. What I do with my time is consecrated as well. I’ve had Christian brothers and sisters criticize me in recent years for not doing what they thought I should do; in one instance the condemnation of a pastor’s wife put my entire family in danger. Perhaps Prince’s work does some good in exposing the dangers of our own selfish prayers and our own judgment of others. For now, all I can do is let the world know that what I do with my time, what I keep on my bookshelf, what I put into my mind, is between me and God. After all, I am His child. And as Prince himself points out towards the beginning of this book, those who Curse the Children of God will themselves be cursed instead.

Fresh New Revelation to Ancient Truth Unfortunately, there are those that would dismiss this body of teaching outright because, in their echo chamber of "truth", they're not familiar with these clear exegetical teachings. Derek Prince has conscientiously provided a profoundly thorough examination of a common subject found in scripture but rarely, if ever, discussed in current theological thought. It is as if Luther or Calvin's failure to discuss the concepts of "blessing and curses" means neither should we! Incredulously, contemporary evangelicalism disregards the significant attention scripture gives in references to this incredibly important subject in both the NT and OT. I can only commend to others that the impact of embracing a modicum of these concepts will dramatically impact their families, church and community in powerful ways.

An in-depth study into the power of words, the material presented has life-changing potential. Be aware that this is probably not something the casual reader can zip through. While organized in a straightforward and logical manner, the reading level may be intimidating to some and the amount of information covered could easily be overwhelming as well. With this in mind, it is probably best approached as a study; even better if you can go through it with a group.

This is a must read. You will learn how to remove any generational curses plaguing your life that you weren't even aware of. You might not believe they exist, but you never know how your ancestors may have behaved that brought your bloodline under the influence of unclean or demonic spirits. Powerful! A must read for any professing Christian! Our culture has become numb to the things of the Spirit realm and this book rejuvenates and reawakens us as Christians to the battle we are in. As well, by the help of the Holy Spirit, the book helps rekindles the fire of the power and authority we have as blood-bought Christians in this world.
