I flip the pages of many decorating books each month, but I don’t remember reviewing one until now. I read much more of the text of this book than I usually read. Perhaps the difference is that the author has degrees in both interior design and journalism; she demonstrates that a caption needs to say more than “The sofa adds a pop of color.” Example, using a double-page spread about dining chairs: About 150 words of copy suggest that (1) one can buy a matching set, but (2) mixed sets are hipper, a I flip the pages of many decorating books each month, but I don’t remember reviewing one until now. I read much more of the text of this book than I usually read. Perhaps the difference is that the author has degrees in both interior design and journalism; she demonstrates that a caption needs to say more than “The sofa adds a pop of color.” Example, using a double-page spread about dining chairs: About 150 words of copy suggest that (1) one can buy a matching set, but (2) mixed sets are hipper, and one should be sure to (3) compare seat height with table height and (4) allow space for walking behind chairs. Three photos add information. The dominant photo shows a wood table with a wing chair for the hostess and upholstered-seat wood chairs for guests. The caption says that the wing chair makes the room feel less staid. [Indeed, when I cover the wing chair, the room looks cold and excessively formal.] A second photo shows a glass-top table with a carved table base, surrounded by four red chairs on metal legs. The caption calls attention to the emphasis on the red chairs and structural table base created by the “barely-there” legs and glass. The third photo, of a mid-century pedestal table with four blue upholstered chairs, reinforces the idea of mixing styles rather than matching. And the caption calls attention to the way the curve of the chair back creates cohesion with the round table. A sidebar on the spread suggests slipcovers for dining chairs, whether custom-made or ready-made, fitted or loose, seasonal or special occasion, or simply practical. In other words, this book has information. Each photo (and a few dozen photographers are credited) shows details that support the copy and that inspire new ideas. The captions offer design tips and often explain “why this works.” My major complaint about this book is that the settings are unrealistic for most readers. Each room seems to have a wall or two of floor-to-ceiling windows, with leafy or watery views. Most rooms seem to soar to 10-foot or higher ceilings with heavy crown molding, and many of the rooms boast cathedral ceilings and/or exposed beams. And - here’s one of my pet peeves about photo-staged rooms - apparently no one reads in those rooms, because most seats lack a decent reading lamp. What’s the point of a chair without a reading lamp?

I am always looking at decorating books, but so many are just too fussy. Paper does it right. This book is almost a crash course in decorating. She defines terms. Tells you how to mix and match colors and furniture. She has tips that helps you incorporate you in the design of your room. She also covers every room of the house. If you are looking for a book on decorating, give this one a shot. I doubt you will be disappointed. This book also counts as a book I could finish in a day as part of the I am always looking at decorating books, but so many are just too fussy. Paper does it right.
