Considering his past, it doesn't come as a surprise, though. However, by doing so he is also hurting Thomas. But Thomas is determined to render their first Christmas as a married couple unforgettable. Well, you are in your forties now. Some decay is expected. Don't forget, before Christmas Eve dinner with my mother, you have to practice not using the f-bomb as punctuation on every sentence. "I'll clean up my language for tomorrow night, but in exchange, I want to hear that word come out of your mouth now. Often. Every time I use this" --the spoon tapped his ass-- "You put it in a sentence I'll like. Statements, requests and outright begging are fine. But use it as a demand even once…" Good yet very painful memories… HOT DAMN! Of course the sex is panty-melting hot! "I love you, Master." It rasped out of his throat, so obvious he couldn't not say it. Those green eyes flickered and the mouth softened. "Same goes, pet. Fuck, I missed you. I almost…but I couldn't. I just couldn't." "Beautiful, but it hurts," Thomas murmured. "I know just what it means." 43 pages of wonderful writing skills. Even Joey's freebies are fabulous! Sure, it is a tiny bit sentimental but isn't it the perfect time to read a beautiful and sentimental little story? This is a short read that packed a total punch at the end. Aside from some steamy and titillating sex, I enjoyed the quiet and reflective scenes all the more. Some well placed humor and banter as well as the adorable Julie were the icing on the very delicious cake. Besides, Marcus is such a complex and special character; I will always hold him very close to my heart. I just want to hug him! Gawd, what a man…*sniffles* Marcus and Thomas's Christmas Vignette provided a range of deep emotions, plenty of passion and a love that goes beyond the written words of "I love you". And I think that hell froze over because…here it comes…I even liked Elaine. Geez, what's wrong with you, Baba? Also, I must repeat myself, I want to read Julie's story. I LOVE, LOVE her! Joey said that certain secondary characters of this Christmas Vignette will get their own story and…Joey…do you hear me? I'm begging you to write Julie's. Pretty please. You can't see me right now but I'm on my knees. *puppy eyes* All in all a heart-warming and great little number. Must be read after Rough Canvas. "Just enjoying what's mine. All mine." Recommended read. http://baba.booklikes.com

Wow. I feel like I held my breath that entire time...it was so...intense...and gorgeous...and romantic...and heartachingly loving. I'm not big on D/s books as many of you know. Rough Canvas was pretty much the only one I've ever enjoyed and I was captivated by it for so many reasons besides and including the BDSM elements. So, though I'd almost never choose to read the subject matter, I couldn't NOT read this. It is Marcus and Thomas after all. And aside from the minor irritation with "master" / Wow. Feelz. Have mercy, this was lots and lots of feelz. I haven’t quite figured out how Hill possesses the ability to cause such extreme emotional overload with her stories. Especially when she conquered it this time in only a few dozen pages….. but damn, she played her trump card here. This gift was intense, passionate, intense, powerful and intense! In all honesty, I’m not sure why I’m so surprised. Their story burned me the first time around; left me scarred with their memory. I was hoping for a repeat offense and I was not disappointed. The newlyweds are preparing for their first Christmas together…. sadly this brings out evil demons from Marcus’s past, demons he had successfully locked away…until now. Everything guarding Marcus is stripped away and we’ve got a front row seat for the reveal. Their relationship is unlike any other and their needs for one another left me awestruck. I was vigorously nodding along with Julie’s sentiments more than once. Impeccable writing allows us to plow straight into their hearts and I relished every bit of the journey getting there. This deeper exploration was excruciating, yet tender at the same time- just like Marcus’s gift to Thomas. Julie was absolutely hysterical and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Elaine reclaimed a few notches back up the hell-no-you-didn’t ladder she was pushed down. I actually enjoyed all of the family. It was gorgeous. It was healing. It was soaring, and left me hanging in the clouds. I grieved the final page. *sigh* I want more….I need more….please? *5 favourite-fiercely-fragile stars*

As expected...INSANELY GOOD! Beautiful Christmas... Marcus and Thomas ... Their love is beautiful, real and so fiercely emotional. I love these men to pieces! Things got quiet and intense as Marcus put one hand over Thomas’s, linked fingers and squeezed, message received. That eased the harder edge to his expression. But not too much, thank God. I need to re-read Rough Canvas...

“Would it be easier to spend Christmas without me?” Marcus asked, his voice neutral. “In your current mood, yes. But no. Because easier doesn’t mean better. I’m starting to get what the better or worse thing means. I’d rather spend my worse day in the world with you than the best day without you. Because it wouldn’t be the best day if you weren’t there.  I just…I feel like we’re just making one another miserable, me wanting you to do Christmas shit, and you so not wanting to do it.” “So you’re try “Would it be easier to spend Christmas without me?” Marcus asked, his voice neutral. “In your current mood, yes. "First Christmas: Marcus and Thomas Christmas Vignette" is a freebie available on JWH forum. It's a forty or so pages novella about Marcus and Thomas first Xmas together. I love these two to pieces, their love story is one of my all time fav book so when I saw that one of my GR friends just read it, I couldn't resist. “I don’t ever want you to dismiss your needs, do you understand? I’ll do more than blister your ass if you do. This works because you don’t retreat an inch from who you want to be with me. You’ve been down that road, remember?” He glanced down meaningfully. “That ulcer is now under control. You do shit like that which sets it off, you and I are going to have a real problem.” Their relationship is still beautiful and intense and I loved Daralyn and Julie's participations. I only gave it 4 stars because even though I know that sweetness usually goes with Xmas stories, here it kind of killed its emotional edge. “You know, at first I wasn’t comfortable with positions like this. You nurturing, surrounding me.” “I know.” “It took me time and practice, and then one day, I wondered why I’d ever resisted it.” Marcus lifted a hand, closed it over Thomas’s on his chest, even as he continued to stare out the window. “I’m your Master, Thomas, but there’s a comfort and safe feeling to your love that I never realized I needed so much, not until you started exercising it with such marvelous consistency.”

After loving Rough Canvas as much as I did -- as much as I do -- it comes as no surprise when I say what I loved most about this vignette was EVERYTHING. This little peek into Marcus and Thomas's life after Rough Canvas, seeing them as a married couple was a perfect follow-up on one of my favorite couples ever. It just reminded me why I love them, why I loved their book, why Joey W. Hill is one of my favorite authors, and why I think Rough Canvas is her masterpiece. This story was beautiful. Hotness, SM, angst, love, sorrow, and happiness all wrapped into one. It was great to see how Marcus was trying to get into the family life, and Thomas helping him do it. I also liked that it gave me the answer to what happened with Daralyn. I had an idea, and I was glad I was right. Reading about Thomas and Marcus always gives me warm, fuzzy feelings, but the gifts they exchanged... Ah, they left me speechless, and a teary mess. It made me love them even more. Anyone who liked Rough Canvas even a little has to read this!

I loved it! It was the perfect visit with two characters that I adore. This vignette delivers the same emotional depth and electric intensity that kept me entranced in Rough Canvas. There's the same presence from both characters but the added material highlights their (Marcus more than Thomas) continued efforts to build a life together. Who would have thought?! ;) I loved it! Joey Hill sucker punched me again! She truly is the Queen of Angst and I love it! She can construct characters that are so three dimensional that I actually become attached to them. I miss them and find myself re-reading some of her books. It's not that she fleshes out the characters and their relationships so magnificently, others do that well too but, she creates their entire world-their friends, their families or lack thereof, their pasts, their idiosyncrasies, the music they listen to, everything. Everything is written in such a way that the reader enters that world. We're transported and isn't that what makes reading fanatics of us all? Reading Joey Hill is a visceral experience. Of course, it doesn't hurt that she writes about kinky people either, in my book. Marcus and Thomas are two of my favorite characters from the Nature of Desire series and this is the tale of their first Christmas together as a married couple. If you've not read Rough Canvas this short will lose something in the translation, although I'm sure it'll still be enjoyable. The backstory on Marcus isn't a pretty one and that past rears its head here. However, with the perseverance of Thomas, his family and their friends Marcus's past doesn't stand a chance. When we put it on the tree, I remember Emile put his head on my shoulder, wrapped both arms around me and said the star wrapped in thorns was like love. ‘It hurts, but it’s beautiful, too. That’s why I like it. It wouldn’t work if it didn’t have both, you know?' The incorrigible Julie makes an appearance. I still want her to have her own book. The boys play matchmaker for Daralyn and Rory and discover Daralyn innately responds to dominance so… that could lead somewhere, I suppose. The kink level in this vignette, I would say is pretty mild or as a friend referred to it, "fluffy bunny, consensual BDSM" which I thought was cute. The sexy times… *fans self* Da-Yum. Just Da-Yum. I think she really let's it fly in her fanfic offerings more so than her published works. Case in point: "I’m awake enough to get inside you. That’s how I want to fall asleep.” Marcus’s hand dropped, thumb hooking inside Thomas’s belt, his fingers curling over his groin on the outside, stroking. “And when I wake in the morning, that’s where I’ll put myself first thing. I want my first Christmas morning memory married to you to be all about tasting every inch of your skin, listening to you begging me to come. I want to see you gripping the sheets, all helpless and out of control, feel your ass squeezing my cock and know that what I want for Christmas is underneath me, all mine. My farm boy." My work here is done. Fantastic holiday present! Thanks, Joey!
