So I've been reading a lot of sci-fi/fantasy lately. And, knowing myself as I do, I am aware that sometimes it takes me a while to pull my mental space out of these bizarre and wonderful worlds, and back into real life. During that difficult transition period, I sometimes have problems getting into books that don't have swords and magic and robots and lasers and demons. So I think to myself, how about a good old-timey 'oat opera' to ease the shift? And I am SO GLAD that I did. This book is awesome So I've been reading a lot of sci-fi/fantasy lately. This book is awesome, and the main character Yakima Henry is troubled and noble and near-invincible. And that's exactly what i want, what I need, from a Western novel protagonist. The author paints a grand picture of both setting and characters, bullets ricochet and dig furrows through flesh, whiskey is served by comely whores, and horses' snorts pepper the air. This series is the perfect way to almost come back to the real world.

3 1/2 stars. This should have called Faith the Whore because her character had the most growth and the plot mainly revolved around her. Yakima Henry was just kind of along for the ride. That's ok, though, because she was a pretty cool character anyway. There was some good action here and a bit of sex. I wouldn't go so far to label it a "sextern" (like Longarm or Lone Star), but it is still there in case that would sway you from or to reading this. I also liked how Yakima Henry wasn't an invincible he-man like many other Western 'series protagonists. He is tough as nails, but he doesn't magically repel bullets like Frank Morgan from The Last Gunfighter series seems to do somehow. Overall, this was a lot of fun and I will definitely be continuing this series.

I read another book in the Yakima Henry series, and wanted to read the first one, which this may or may not be. Are there bodice rippers for men? This story has so much sex in it with manly, long-haired men with narrow waists and muscles on muscles and beauteous whores it got a little silly. No, a lot silly.

The Lonely Breed doesn't break any new ground. It doesn't look to push any boundaries. But it succeeds at being an entertaining romp of a western with unexpected twists as it continues. An interesting first book in a series, intriguing enough to be worth its follow-up. The Lonely Breed doesn't break any new ground. It doesn't look to push any boundaries. You don't mess with Yakima Henry the kung fu half breed of the old west. This is pure old fashioned action/adventure with the good guy loner overcoming the odds and getting the girl. It does what is sets out to do and is enjoyable for it. You don't mess with Yakima Henry the kung fu half breed of the old west.
