"Rock is hot and sexy, vulgar and wild", writes Mablen Jones in her detailed look at rock fashions in Getting it On: The Fashions on Rock N Roll. An eye opening look at what it takes to create the iconic looks of some of rock's most infamous acts, Jones shows no fear of hyperbole when she equates rock acts with the mythological gods of Greek and Roman myths. Some of her analysis, although certainly well argued and sound, do stretch the imagination of the casual reader. The constant comparisons of various personalities to mythological beings like Pan or Prometheus grows more and more overdone as the book continues. More interesting is the chronicle of the evolution of various images of rock stars. The book does a thorough job of tracing various details of dress through different performers, for example the rimmed glasses Buddy Holly wore reappearing decades later on Elvis Costello. The book is sprinkled with amusing anecdotes, ranging from Elvis using an empty toilet paper roll to enhance the size of his 'package' to the design of Little Richards' clothes so he could rip them off and toss to the audience. The book acts as a good history of popular music from the 1950s onwards to the 1980s. For those with an avid interest in music history, if you don't mind the frequent detours into the author's outlining of various myths and legends, this book is sure to be of interest.
