Charlie Hitchcock, class geek and Tyler Yu, class bully are stuck in a tentative friendship after solving the mysteries happening at the hotel Tyler's family owns so Tyler could buy the motorcycle he had been saving up for. Now the elevator operator Brack (who is really the famous missing magician, Abracadabra) is planning to put on a show at the hotel and reveal his secret identity to the press and the rest of the world. The only problem is that the currently famous magician Theopolis comes to the hotel and performs some seemingly impossible feats of magic - all at the same time. Can the boys figure out how he managed it, or was it really magic after all? And will Theopolis succeed in stealing the show and Brack's part of the hotel right out from under him? This was a good follow-up to the first novel, which had Charlie and Tyler solving the mysteries of the hotel itself. This time they have to find out Theopolis' secrets before Brack loses everything. To me the illustrations were the best part, just like in the first book. It was a cute book about friendship and mystery, but I felt like it was lacking some of the magic in the original. The description and following picture of Brack's secret room on top of the hotel was awesome. And the answer to the mystery was plausible, but predictable. I think this book would have been a lot more fun if I was still under 13 years old and loved magic tricks. Overall, a fun book that was just a good fluffy, middle-grade read to give my brain a break from all the YA and Harlequin angst. I would recommend this to middle-school and late elementary teachers for reluctant readers and young boys. VERDICT: 3/5 Stars *I received an Advanced Reading E-book Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. No money or favors were exchanged for this review. Fun story! This one did a better job of making the boys into heroes rather than kids who ruin the fun of magic tricks. I also like the fact that the boys aren't kids who seem like they'd normally be friends. You never know who will share your interests and hobbies, try to get to know everyone and you'll find the best friends where you least expect! Fun story! The Return of Abracadabra is the second book in the “Hocus Pocus Hotel” series. Once again, we join Charlie and Ty as they set off to solve mysteries in the Abracadabra Hotel. Our heroes know the way these tricks normally work, but they are stymied when they learn that the floor underneath has been sealed. Charlie and Ty set off to question the guests, all accomplished magicians, and figure out how the secret behind the illusion. The second part of the book involves Brack, the famous retired magician Abracadabra, challenged by the Great Theopolis to figure out how a trick was done or forfeit his hotel. The world now learns what Charlie figured out in our last book – that Brack owns the hotel and disguises himself as an elevator operator to avoid pointless challenges. Instead of being able to put on his show as he’d originally intended, Brack enlists Charlie and Ty to help him figure out how the trick was done. Charlie and Ty race around the hotel, questioning magicians and performers to attempt to save the hotel from Theopolis. Once again, the book is gorgeously illustrated by Lisa Weber in vivid colors. The stories are well-targeted at the Elementary age reader. Several explanations are given for the illusions of magicians with nice sketches to explain all of the components involved. Posters aren’t just described, but are illustrated in full detail. My thoughts: This is a worthy successor to the Hocus Pocus Hotel and sure to captivate young readers who have an interest in magic and mystery. My child was looking forward to this since finishing the first book and quickly devoured it when given a chance. I’d highly recommend it for younger readers. Disclaimer: I was provided with a preview copy of this book with no expectations on the part of the publisher. In this follow up to the earlier Hocus Pocus Hotel title, unlikely friends Charlie Hitchcock and Tyler Yu join forces again to solve a mystery, in this case, how the arrogant magician Theopolis managed to perform feats of levitation and juggling amid special effects and his own disappearance. I enjoyed reading this fast-paced story and trying to guess what the magician was up to. I liked the scenes in which the special effects seemed to impress the audience more than actual magic since that represents our times in which so many are enamored with style over substance.

Another one of my granddaughter's summer reading books. Interesting and fast paced. She liked it and I did as well. Magic was involved and puzzle solving. Colorful pictures and graphics in this book, as well as in the first Hocus Pocus book. Another one of my granddaughter's summer reading books. Interesting and fast paced.
