Вълка (Вилка?) е планета на пастири, забутана в гъза на разпаднала се звездна империя. Когато месните решават да не си плащат данъците на централната власт - състоящ Мечове и космически кораби, магьосници и астронавигатори - ако това не е неосъзната мечта на всяко едно пораснало и непораснало момче, здраве му кажи. А тук са опаковани в доста прилична обвивка. Книгата е първа от трилогия, която е замислена като такава и за това чертае само контур на (както се надявам) епичните следващи приключения. Вълка (Вилка?) е планета на пастири, забутана в гъза на разпаднала се звездна империя. Когато месните решават да не си плащат данъците на централната власт - състояща се от военна каста и религиозен орден. Първите с конете и копията, вторите с остарели и почти неработещи звездни кораби и знанието да ги насочват от камик на камик, един проблемен воевода е изпратен там да потуши "ереста" с помощта на млад и не по-малко амбициозен свещеник/космически пилот. Или поне те така си мислят, а целта е там кротко да обвинят в измяна първия и да му клъцнат грацмуля. Едно нещо не осъзнават нито селяците, нито амбициозните младежи, нито кръвожадно настроения им сатрап. Това е последното място където има жив представител на имперската фамилия властвала преди три хилядолетия. Е, позамразен, пристрастен към определена дрога и... направо луд, но извор на знания забравени от векове. Това ще доведе (пак, надявам се) до огромно разместване в многопланетната почти-не-империя. Харесвами как Гилман, въпреки леко дървения си стил, успява да обещае нещо вълшебно на читателя. Идеята не е някакъв диамант, но реализацията ѝ до тук е много добра. Използва и някой от любимите ми похвати за рисуване на по-мащабна картина, които до сега само при Зелазни са ми давали очевидно търсения ефект. Три звездички с надеждата да се вдигат при следващите книги.

It reads like a mashup between Dune and Foundation (and of course Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire): an alien future history whose technology-fearing feudal culture relies on the mysterious Navigators for transportation between the stars, and a small group of people trying to regroup the fallen Empire and shorten the brutal Dark Times. I rather enjoyed it, although it didn't have quite the pace and feel of its sequel, The Rebel of Rhada. I rather enjoyed it, although it didn't have quite the pace and feel of its sequel, The Rebel of Rhada. The depth of details is the same, with the chapters headed by fictional quotations from the Second Stellar Empire and the later, dimly-viewed Confederation. I really like these touches, which really add levels of texture to the story.
