    Whilst this little book's focus is specifically on John Coltrane and his music, it's scope means that it serves as little more than just that. It aims to place Trane's, and indeed Jazz's musical development into the context of the American socio-political climate of the latter half of the C20th; as a means of expression, protest and political galvanisation. In so doing it not only charts the music's course over the last 80 years, mentioning nearly all the major players but also that of the Ameri Whilst this little book's focus is specifically on John Coltrane and his music, it's scope means that it serves as little more than just that. It aims to place Trane's, and indeed Jazz's musical development into the context of the American socio-political climate of the latter half of the C20th; as a means of expression, protest and political galvanisation. In so doing it not only charts the music's course over the last 80 years, mentioning nearly all the major players but also that of the American Civil rights movement of the 1950's and 60's, and shows how symbiotic both of these were to each other. This focus does mean that there are certain necessary omissions, Jessie Jackson and Herbie Hancock to name but two, but if you wanted a short introduction to either of these subjects, this would be a good place to start.
