Her unique storylines alone can capture a reader's attention. Add to that, well developed characters and wings and you just can't miss. Yes, you read that correctly, I said wings. Sarah seems to have a true affection for creatures with wings. Ambrosia Pellerin is a journalist sent on a crazy mission, she's to interview a guy who believes he has found a Phoenix. Only said interviewee is just a little possessive of the story, he beats her, steals her car, money, phone, etc.. and sends her off in the desert. Desperate she stops for help at a shack in the middle of nowhere.. Where she meets a mysterious man who initially is all helpful and kind but suddenly give his car keys and his car and tells her to leave. Only she can't. Worried about the man she stays just long enough to watch the entire place go up in flames. Reece Bennu is a phoenix not just any phoenix but THE phoenix, the Prince, the heir to the throne, the oldest phoenix of the purist bloodline. So what's he doing out in the middle of nowhere? He's getting ready to be reborn, in a place where his ashes can safely disperse. What he doesn't need is some crazed human around trying to prove phoenixes (phoenixi?) exist. And he really doesn't need the sexy human around. But really who ever said life was easy? So it's a month later and the ever so pure Bennu bloodlines are in for a bit of a shakeup.. Ambrosia is pregnant and her entire world has changed in an instant. First she finds out she's pregnant, then she discovers the father's a phoenix, then she finds out she has to move (like now), then... Yeah it's a bit rough on Ambrosia. Of course that's before she finds out her smokin hawt baby daddy is well, sort if a god..Oh and that there is major prejudice issues..Oh and his dear old granny is the worst of the lot. All this and really they barely know each other.. But!! One of the reasons this story works is because Ms. Gilman didn't try to make them instantly in love. These two had to learn to work together, had to choose first to be parents, then a family and finally fall in love. They had to discover who the other person was and how to compromise. Reece had to learn that compromise didn't mean that Ambrosia did all the bending, he had to as well. In some ways this was just your regular romance.. That is the true joy of this book. Oh wow. So this would have to be a 3.5 star read. When I saw this, I really thought it'd be sorta fluff and basically cliché. Surprise, surprise. It wasn't and boy did I have a grand old time reading this. I can count the number of Phoenix books I've read on one hand. Completely novel a concept, yet it's not explored much. The couple I have read, have always followed the typical shifter plot base. That being said this wasn't much different in that sense. Except this read more like a contemporary Oh wow. Like my favorite contemporary could shift in Phoenixes. I mean Holy Shit that's effing outta this world. I'm gonna cut this review short here cause I'm on the phone typing this and too lazy to switch to my laptop. Long story short, definitely read this. It has Umaiya's seal of approval. :p ↖(^ω^)↗

ARC provided for an honest review 3 Stars! The book was too short. I never read a paranormal book about phoenixes. That’s why I was really interested in this book and the concept sounded intriguing. The world of phoenix shifters is very interesting. They might be immortal however they need warmth and sun to survive as well as different kinds of food / spices on a regular basis or they’ll die. I had the feeling the synopsis was a bit misleading. They might be immortal however they need warmth and sun to survive as well as different kinds of food / spices on a regular basis or they’ll die. I had the feeling the synopsis was a bit misleading. I expected much more from the story. There is actually no relative of Reece out there who has murder in mind. Well not really at least. It’s just a case of resentment and they want Ambrosia gone not dead. And I expected more from Ambrosias family, too. Maybe I didn’t catch it but there is also no dire medical situation that she has to return to. She does want to return to her hometown / house and her sister but because she misses her. The only medical situation I was aware of is the health problem Ambrosia had as a baby and little kid and her sister was born with a defect. Maybe this is the medical situation and I didn’t really catch that. What I liked was Ambrosia and especially Reece as characters. Reece was so sweet and normal. With normal I mean the little things he did with Ambrosia like kick her in the foot when he talked to her and she said something silly. Another thing was when he let himself fall face first on the bed and lay there for several minutes. In my head this was so damn cute and silly. It made him real and likable. Also Ambrosia wasn’t hysterical or totally overwhelmed by the pregnancy or the existence of phoenixes which she could have been. Who wouldn’t faint knowing you are pregnant with a phoenix baby from a guy you have seen for a total of 10 minutes. But she was strong, caring and reasonable. It was very nice to read and I liked the characters from the start. However the story could have been more detailed and needs some more drama. Nothing major happens in the whole book. The great final is told in 4 pages and no one gets hurt physically or emotionally. There is no real villain. Reece grandmother is a bitch but Sarah Gilman gives us reasons for why she is the way she is. So you can’t really hate her either. All in all, this book was just too short. The basic concept of the phoenix, how they exist, what they do and their whole world is great in concept. This book deserves 100 more pages to really honor the idea of the author and to make it more exiting.

They begin to fall for each other but his grandmother will not let go of the past of their people to give them a chance at love. They have to be strong if they are going to work things out. Ambrosia is a very truthful person. She doesn't like to lie or hide anything. Finding out there are real phoenix she has a hard time with the fact she has to be quiet about it. She is also faced with prejudice people that do not like her one bit. Being pregnant is knew to her and she wants the baby safe no matter what. Reece at time while a phoenix can seem cold hearted, He tries to hold back his feeling from Ambrosia to keep her safe. He is a very caring person and wants what is best for his people and those he cares about. He doesn't like to be faced with leading his people and has put that to the side for a long time. If you read a lot of paranormal books you are always looking for something new. I have to say this book is one for me. While I have read a few books with phoenix in them, nothing like this. The phoenix in this book have a human side and not just a bird like I am used to. I loved every bit of this book as it brought a refreshing new take I couldn't put down. I liked both Reece and Ambrosia. They both had a few things you didn't like about them and it made them more real. They have lots of heat between them and not just because he is a phoenix. Her getting pregnant is another thing that will stand out to you as it is unusual. You get to know them both as you read this fascinating book. I also have to say I liked how you really had not one but two bad guys to read about. They have to deal with a lot. Be prepared to hate Reece's grandmother as I know I did. She is a horrible woman. If you want a different take on phoenix pick this up and give it a try. You won't regret it.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review! I absolutely loved Ashes by Sarah Gilman. The storyline was unique, you don't come across many books from the paranormal genre that feature a phoenix. They have been thrown together in the most extreme of circumstances, and have to figure out a way to make it work between them, if only for the sake of their child. Adding to the depth of the story was the fact that Reece is from a royal phoenix line of nothing but pure bloods, his child will be the first that won't be. Needless to say, his family won't be too happy with the news. I was even more impressed with Reece's character than anything. He wasn't emotionally unconnected like a lot of 'alpha' males are in paranormal books. He actually invested in building some type of relationship with Ambrosia. The two of them falling in love with one another was a complete bonus! I thought to myself while reading this, even if they become nothing but friends it would work. Ambrosia is a journalist and Reece has to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't actually spill the beans about the phoenix. She has a little trouble with it, but for the most part understands the need for secrecy. She managed to keep her end of the deal. All in all, it was a beautiful short read filled with emotion, love and adventure. I wouldn't mind reading it again!

I was given an ARC by Entangled Covet in exchange for an honest review. This was the first book by Sarah Gilman for me, and I'll definitely check out her books in the future. There were things in the blurb, that weren't in the book. I'm not sure how to explain it without giving spoilers, and I don't want to do that because I really liked it and want other people to read it.

This was a great easy read. The fact that our hero is a phoenix made for a refreshing and different paranormal romance and because of the associated elements of sun, heat and fire it wasn't by any means 'dark'. I just wish it had been longer as I was left wanting more. I loved them both; Reece was a sweetheart most of the time and steps up to the mark in protecting his growing family. Ambrosia is strong and a little stubborn, but their attraction is clear and both want the best for their child. Admittedly I would have liked a little more fight and interaction with Reece's family and some more content between him and Ambrosia heading towards the end, but that doesn't detract from a sweet and intimate romance, with passion, some action and a descriptively beautiful setting that I'd recommend. 3.5 stars

I really liked this book from beginning to end. There was no part that seemed slow or uninteresting. IT is not often that I find a book that has a new twist and when I do they are usually a let down. This book was so far from that!!!! A phoenix, a girl impregnated by ashes from his rebirth and a psycho grandmother. Good STUFF! I will definitely be watching for more books from Sarah Gilman. I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book is not a bad read but the story is very simplistic. Nothing really happens the drama never evolves into suspense. There are token scenes with bad guys, who are an immediate threat one moment and then never talked about for the rest of the book. I liked the firebird shape shifting story line and the characters were well written and interesting; but in future books the author needs to include more drama and suspense.

After approaching the man, named Lucas Wade, in the desert, he goes berzerk, beating her up, stealing her cell phone and car, and leaving her for dead in the harsh terrain. After awakening, Ambrosia stumbles around trying to find any signs of life from whom she could ask for help when she comes across a small building. The owner, very exotic looking Reece Bennu, proceeds to tend to her wounds, allowing her to use his car to drive to safety. As she walks to the vehicle in disbelief, the shack explodes into a ball of flames and ash; the ash which rains down upon her like she's in a snow storm. A short time later, she realizes what finding Lucas Wade and Reece Bennu means for her....and it is means a complete change and unheaval of life as she knows it. Back in Ambrosia's hometown of Sandwich, Massachusetts, she is shocked when Reece appears, alive and well. Reece informs her that Lucas Wade is searching for her because he thinks Ambrosia has information about the phoenix he knows was in New Mexico. Reece is there to warn her and protect her. She's also surprised to learn that he is indeed the Prince of a paranormal group of Phoenixes; one of the few of the pure blood Bennu lineage ~ and that she's most likely carrying his phoenix child.....In order to protect Ambrosia and their unborn child, Reece whisks Ambrosia away to Hawaii, where a large number of phoenix live; including Reece's family, who most likely will not take a pure blood phoenix Prince getting a human pregnant very well. What Reece doesn't know is that one family member may commit murder to keep the bloodline clean. Ashes is probably one of the smoothest and easiest reads I've had. All dialogue between the characters is comfortable and all conversations flow well. Ambrosia's character is easily likeable and there isn't any problem picking up her feelings as the author writes them. Her emotional outbursts at finding out who Reece is, what she's carrying and how, plus the anxiety of being told that her child will never be accepted since he/she will be a half breed, are realistically conveyed. Reece's character is written realistically as a man who has very little experience with women in a serious capacity. Flings he may have had over the many, many years he's been around haven't prepared him at all for everything that's tossed at him involving Ambrosia, their unconventional (and probably frowned upon) union, the life that Ambrosia now carries, and the family members that must now be dealt with concerning it all. I really enjoyed that the book contained a different type of shifter. The usuals; wolves, large cats, dragons, etc., are great but the occasional deviation into something fresh and new is nice. The phoenix was a brilliant choice. Oh, and Reece's Tree was pretty cool, too. Review Copy Courtesy Of: Entangled Publishing, at no cost, in exchange for an honest review.)

Reece’s relatives plot murder while Ambrosia’s family faces a dire medical situation and ask her to return. Will the couple survive when Reece denies Ambrosia his trust and her freedom when she needs both more than anything? Review: It must be hard to come up with new and inventive stories, but Ms.Gilman sure did with this one. I don't think I have read a story about a Phoenix before and I really enjoyed it. Ambrosia is a reporter who after being knocked out while on assignment comes across Reece in the middle of the desert. Reece helps her and tries to send her away quickly, it does not work and Ambrosia is there when the building explodes and unbeknownst to her Reece is reborn. In a interesting twist fertile woman can get pregnant from the ashes of the phoenix; which is what happens to Ambrosia. Now, Reece is "back from dead" and at her door saying he needs to protect her from the man who hurt her in the desert and explain what he is. Now, I think the part where he protecting her and the "bad guy" were kind of glossed over and somewhat unfinished. Yes, he destroys the guys evidence of Phoenix's but if the guy was that much into finding the truth wouldn't he just start over and try to pursue them? So, Reece uproots Amby and tells her she will be looked down on because she is human and not pure blooded, that pissed me off and I think she should have been a little stronger with Reece about it. The longer they are together the stronger their feelings grow, as well as Reece's grandmother, who is pretty much a racist. Grandmother does some terrible things in the name of an untainted blood line, which sends Amby running. But you know Reece goes running after her once he has his grandmother taken care of and they have their HEA. A great inventive storyline that kept me entertained and entranced until the very end. 3.5 stars

Another complication for Ambrosia, because Reece is actually a pureblood phoenix, and he expected to take a phoenese (it's phoenix women) for mate. Reece try to coax Ambrosia to go to Hawaii, his domain, and so Ambrosia must leave her life behind. Worse, Reece's grandmother, Marian, and his kin didn't approve Ambrosia and Reece's relationship. Ashes is like a traditional Harlequin novel with sprinkle of paranormal . You just switch a billionaire with baby theme, with a powerfull and well respected phoenix shapeshifter. The story is short, and enjoyable to read. Didn't take a long time to read , so this one is perfect for a short and quick read. Reece and Ambrosia also likable characters and Ms Gilman write their conflict and relationship well. Reece is kinda mix of alpha and beta hero, make me gratefull for he's not fall into "jerk"kind of alpha. Ambrosia had guts and doesn't back away from threat, even the last part kinda change that. What make me a little disappointed and reduce the rating, it's because the confict between Reece and his grandma is too easy. Not any further development and no epic scene. It's also weak. Anyway, if you love a traditional paranormal romance with some cliche and need a short read, you can try Ashes. Thanks for Entangled for providing the e-ARC copy

I received an ARC through NetGalley. I fully expected to not like Ashes. It's one of those cases where I just got excited based on the cover, PHOENIX, but didn't read the blurb. Then I did and was like...oh. Pregnancy is sooo not my thing, especially in a romance, but luckily it is not the focus of the story. It's just what gets the love interests together. Ambrosia (awful name!) is sent to interview some guy who claims to have found a phoenix. Well, he's crazy, thinks she's there to steal his story, so he beats her and leaves her to die in the desert. Ambrosia manages to find a shack where Reece resides, he tends to her wounds, and immediately kicks her out. Reece is the phoenix, and he's about to go up in flames and start a new life. Ambrosia sees the fire and goes back to help him, unknowingly inhales some ashes and winds up pregnant. Oops. I didn't dislike Ashes as much I as expected, but it still wasn't great. Luckily the pregnancy is mostly in the background once Reece tracks down Ambrosia, explains the situation, and whisks here away to Hawaii, since phoenixes need lots of sunlight and warmth to survive. I actually really loved how the author explained phoenixes, and enjoyed the world she created for them. Although the talking trees were kind of weird, but that's okay. The romance is pretty good. It's not insta-love. Reece and Ambrosia get to know each other over months and are lovers in the meantime, but not in love. That comes later. I was totally disappointed in the lack of sex, especially since I had to deal with a pregnancy. I feel cheated. Ashes could have gotten another star, except I realized that the plot was completely dropped! That man Ambrosia was going to interview, Wade, just disappears. Reece had been after him too, since he can't let the secret of his species get out. Wade is also dangerous and comes after Ambrosia in her home town, which is actually how Reece finds her, and he makes a huge deal out of protecting her and looking for him. Then it starts getting cold, they go Hawaii, and Wade is forgotten. Kind of a waste. So, I liked Ashes, but it wasn't anything special. It's super short, so everything moves along pretty fast. The phoenix mythology is great, but the plot and romance were lacking. Read more of my reviews at Pinkindle Reads & Reviews.

I was drawn to this book by the story line that you do not find alot. Ambrosia is journalist and following a fruitcake who is trying to reveal the phoenix is here and where is sent by her employer ti do a story and ends up at the door of Reece who tries to help her and then hurriedly tells her to take his car and go. But before she leaves something unexpected happens and she fears Reece has not survived. He is more than he looks and survive he does because he is the phoenix one of many and a purebred royal. But oh no things not so simple is the fact Ambrosia ends up pregnant and thinks at first must be some one night stand. What is a girl to do? Reece will take care of any evidence that might of survived and namely via Ambrosia and also fruitcake that was following him . With his worst fears confirmed he must make her come to terms with the fact he is father of her baby even no physical contact by them each and tell her without a freak out who and what he is. Interesting so far and gets even more so. Dive in even more and I followed and funny different kind story in this romance that kept me moving right along. Glad she would accept him and go with him but won't accept being treated like nothing just because she is human. You go girl us humans do have some good going for us especially since the other always want a human when they are not suppose to or is frowned upon. Heat is certainly part of the mix they do mix well together. Family important but also mean and nasty grandmother included here-sister spills the beans on some of her nonsense. Love that Reece will stand up for what he loves and cares for and takes the steps to put things right. Victory oh so sweet in the reading too. Nice ending that shows love is really the victor here and would not have wanted any other way. received a arc for a honest review.

Would she anyway considering he's crazy and threatens to turn her world upside down? Nevertheless, the pregnancy raises all kinds of ugly questions. Do they want to keep the baby? Where would they live? Is it safe in this world for a mixed-blood? Even though it's all too much for Ambrosia, the situation cannot be ignored, so she agrees to Reece's plan. That's when things start to get scorching hot between them. While sparks of passion fly, they will have to face danger from all sides. I've never read any novel about a phoenix race living among humans. Of course, I was hooked on this premise and the provocative issue of unwanted pregnancy that changes this unorthodox couple forever. Besides the reversed relationship, which starts with the result and goes forward from that intense point, there is plenty of room for other elements. I thought it was very interesting to see so many tough issues being raised. Racism, family rejection, psychological trauma, physical disabilities, and media exposure were all tackled as real threats to the main characters' relationship and evolution. Despite the insurmountable odds, what Ambrosia and Reece share goes from lustful heat to a deep connection. I loved Reece's sense of honour, though his initial emotional detachment infuriated me for a while. Ambrosia's reaction to the discovery of human firebirds was mild at times, but still presented very understandable stages of acceptance and disbelief. The story has got a good plot that's constantly moving along and the ending is sweet. I loved all the folklore around the phoenix people, the burgeoning romance and a very special place in the ocean where most of the drama takes place. Very nice reading.

Wow what a unique book from this new to me author. I have read quite a few shifter type books but I don't recall reading about a Phoenix before well unless you count Fawkes from the Harry Potter books! This story starts with a young journalist Ambrosia being left stranded in the middle of no where by the guy she as supposed to interview. The fact that he was probably completely insane as he believed he had discovered a real life Phoenix was just the icing on the cake! So here is Ambrosia miles from anywhere and what does she find? A gorgeous caring guy called Reece who just seems to disappear when his house goes up in smoke! A month later the dead guy Reece shows up at Ambrosias home and although she's relieved to see him alive it's really bad timing as it starting to look like her not to recent one night stand left her with a little present! Reece doesn't help matters though when he claims that the baby she's carrying is his and o yes he just happens to be a Phoenix! Turns out he had deliberately found somewhere remote as it as his time to be reborn and by breathing in the resulting ash Ambrosia became pregnant! Reece will protect his unborn child and it's mother at any cost but his own people may not be so keen. Facing prejudice in the most unlikely quarter Ambrosia has no choice but to trust Reece but will a relationship built just on necessity ever really work? This as an interesting take on paranormal romance. The idea of pregnancy resulting from ashes was maybe a little far fetched but hey oh it is fiction after all . I will be honest and say I don't think I personally would accept a giant bird man quite so easily but it worked for these characters. As for the characters Reece is an absolute sweetie and it was easy to understand Ambrosias attraction to him. This is hard for me to rate as I did enjoy it but I prefer a longer story.

This is the first book that I have read involving Phoenix. I really love the whole mythos behind these unusual creatures and it was a nice break from the standard fare of wolf and big cat shifters. He helps tend to her wounds but quickly tries to send her on her way. Reece is about to go through his "rebirth" something that happens every 100 years of a Phoenix's life. I won't give out any spoilers as to how (loved it), but Ambrosia ends up pregnant after their encounter. Reece who is the Phoenix prince and next in line for the throne, can't stop thinking of Amby while he is searching for the man that claims he has proof of his race. After tracking her down and finding out that she is pregnant with his child, Reece convinces Amby to come back to his home so he can take care of her and the baby. Although he is developing feelings for her he believes that he can never take her as a mate because his family will never accept her or a half breed child. As they grow closer Reece's grandmother enters the picture determined to get rid of Ambrosia and keep the Bennu line pure. I enjoyed this story, Ambrosia had a difficult childhood but rolled with the punches and was determined to do what was best for her child. And although Reece was determined to take care of Amby and his child, my only complaint was that I wished Reece would have gotten his act together a little quicker and fought harder for her at the end. But I am hoping that the author will write more books set in this world. The uniqueness of the Phoenix storyline is definitely worth continuing. *I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

We have so many great books that came out in December of this year and ASHES is right there at the top with many others. I wanted to read ASHES because it sounded unique and it was that and more. She has no clue how that event is going to change her life forever. I really enjoyed Ambrosia's character. She's suitably skeptical when Reece explains who he is and how she got pregnant. She doesn't blindly jump on board but makes him prove himself. There is nothing worse in a story as having someone blindly and immediately believe anything that comes out of a strangers mouth so this made me like Ambrosia right away. I also liked Reece. He is honest from the beginning and although I thought he was a bit of an ass at times I understood where he was coming from and he redeemed himself in the end. The romance was well written and the couples struggles felt genuine. The story was fast paced, smooth and kept me interested. I loved the world that ASHES takes place in. I loved the Phoenix storyline and everything that Sarah put into their history and way of life. I don't see anything that makes me think this will be part of a series and the ending completed the story nicely but I can't help wish there was more to read about Ambrosia and Reece. * This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The attraction between Reece and Ambrosia is hot and passionate with some steamy sex scenes. The author does a fantastic job of conveying the personalities of the enchanting characters that make it easy to relate to them and understand their motivations. This fascinating world captures the imagination with unique elements and bewitching mythology that grips the reader and doesn’t let go. I really enjoyed this book and hope that the author writes more books about the mythological firebird world. Some of the interesting concepts and elements that the author added into the story is pure genius and has room for a lot of promising possibilities.

Ashes (Entangled Covet) Sarah Gilman Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews. I hadn't realised this book was so short, I tend to avoid those, feeling they don't really allow the reader time to get deep into the story, and I like to be fully immersed in the plot and characters. I'm glad I did as it was an enjoyable read. Anyway the book...I enjoyed the story, good plot, good characters and a fun read. It had the characters I feel necessary for a good romance, Ambrosia and Reece of course, but also a good “bad” person in the form of the controlling and wicked grandmother. I loved the phoenix slant, and the way it shaped so much of the action. The mysterious Trees too were a fun touch, along with the reasonable ( its fiction, so truth and believe needs a bit of suspension!) explanations as to how they cope with humans, and keep the secret of the species from them. It all wrapped up neatly to a HEA. I just wish it was longer – in my view Sarah has used all the elements that would make a great series and if this could have been strung out into one longer book, with some follow ups either of Ambrosia and Reece in the near future – a “what happened next” scenario, or the family or relatives and their stories, or even just spin off adventures of these characters, maybe how certain forces are out to release their secret... anything like that – I’d love to have read it. Still, I enjoyed this even despite the space limitations. Stars: four. ARC supplied via publisher

Ashes was very a pleasing surprise for me. I found it to be a sweet and exciting PNR with a new kind of shifter for me - a phoenix. With PNRs being my preferred genre, it’s not often I come across new and unique shifter so when the opportunity is offered, I jump. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the plot twists were fairly unique. The ending was more than satisfying. Over-all I fantastic read. Reece is a phoenix. Not any old phoenix, he’s royalty. Reading through the blurb that is was I pretty much expected. However, that wasn‘t the case. I won’t spoil it on the how, but needless to say I was surprised. Actually, it was the whole phoenix phenomenon that had me half captivated. The other have were the characters. Ambrosia and Reese are really sweet together. The slow build up to their relationship and sexual heat between then very nicely done. The secondary characters were an added bonus (LOVED the tree!). Of course, there are the antagonist who manage to keep this story rolling. Happily, there is an epilogue at the end that completes Reese and Ambrosia’s story off very sweetly so I don’t have to wait around for a next book. ASHES by Sarah Gilman is the first book by this author that I’ve read, but certainly not the last. The story of the Phoenix, the bird that is reborn time and again from fire, is one that is both fascinating and also the premise of Sarah Gilman’s book. A journalist unknowingly steps into the home of a phoenix who is about to expire. As she leaves, the home explodes and there are some very interesting consequences to her inhaling the ashes. The phoenix isn’t just any phoenix, but Reece is the king of his species - even if he hasn’t assumed the official role. When he tracks down the journalist, Ambrosia, he discovers that indeed his ashes took root and soon he will be a father. As the two of them flee a phoenix hunter to the warm Hawaiian Island refuge, they discover that there might be a bit of real passion between the two of them. However humans are considered less than phoenixes in this society and Reece, the king to be, is a pure blood. Certainly there could be no future to find in their mutual passion. Or could there be? Along the way there’s some inter-phoenix quarrels, some very hot love scenes, and a fascinating look at phoenix culture. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope that there will be subsequent books in a series. Four solid stars to Sarah Gilman’s ASHES , a passionate love affair that flames true! The crazy man swears he found a true phoenix, straight from mythology. After being taken care of by Reece, she's suddenly ushered out quickly and told to take his car when his building incinerates with him inside! Shocked, Ambrosia stumbles away. Later, we find out she is pregnant by Reece. No, she didn't have sex with him. Phoenixes can only procreate during a rebirth...which she unwittingly witnessed. I liked how Ambrosia was disbelieving when Reece comes to check on her to discover if she's pregnant or not. Who would believe someone claiming to be a phoenix right away? But I also liked how, despite being overwhelmed, she accepts it after being offered irrefutable proof. I would've liked more on the betrayal of his family member, more of a confrontation, more of a firm conclusion there as I thought it was a bit soft, but I truly enjoyed their courtship, Reece's blundering honesty and bewilderment, and his little sister, Celeste. If this book turned into a series, I'd be gobbling them up! Received my copy from Entangled in exchange for an honest review -- no compensation received

Well she didn’t know and was just checking out a story by someone who may or may not have been a lunatic. Turns out there was an actual birdlike species and she got caught in the tail-end of a rebirth. It just happened to be the guy who treated her injuries. So imagine her surprise when she manages to see him again and he's suppose to be dead and when he tells her that she might be carrying his child. Well he did run into her at the pharmacy. And she was holding a pregnancy test. Apparently, all fertile female humans had to do was breathe in the ashes and woila! Reese turned out to be a prince in his species an actual true blood Phoenix and when he got mixed up with Ambrosia he kind of knew the reaction he’d get from those around him, but he didn’t care. Ambrosia for her part held up pretty well against the odds of getting along with those that were close to Reece. They were a fun couple once they got together and he even managed to learned to be a responsible leader to his people despite the odds. An enjoyable read and a very quick one you’ll enjoy. I really liked this book in the beginning, it catches your attention and keeps you engaged. I would have like more detail on what happened to Ambrosia with Wade, show it don't tell it after. That would have been an even better start for this book. Still, it is a great hook in the start. The book jumps ahead a month later and still has a nice flow. You get to learn about phoenixes and then Ambrosia and Reece are reunited. I thought the whole side plot here sort of fell off, way too easy a resolve. No more suspense now it is a Harlequin style romance with the she's having my baby theme. Still a good read but a sudden change in the flow. It also slows down quite a bit. I really liked Ambrosia and preferred when things were in her POV, Reece was rather stiff in the narrative. She has a great sass and the perfect amount of spunkiness to carry things off. I actually thought she was too good for him most of the time. In the end it is a nice romance with a lot less action than I hoped for. I good read but I was hoping for an inferno, instead I was delivered a campfire. I liked Ms Gilman's writing and she has a definite creative spark. Phoenixes are not common in paranormal reads. This was a rather interesting take on the mythology. I would be interested in seeing more, perhaps a series? *Disclosure- I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
