I bought this book in my trip to Greece...it was like a compulsive thing I bought because I have a problem with buying books...I never thought that I would enjoy so much this book! It is a nice way to learn about the Greek Gods in a simple but yet very informative way! The book is divided in a lot of parts! Mainly they are divided by the 12 olympian Gods,And each chapter tells about the God and stories that have to do with them...they were very interesting and well I thought I knew a lot about t I bought this book in my trip to Greece...it was like a compulsive thing I bought because I have a problem with buying books...I never thought that I would enjoy so much this book! My favourite chapter was the one from Athena...because I really love this goddess and they had to do with Athens...and I could remember more about my trip which was one of the best experiences I had in my life! I totally recommend this boom it is the best! It has become one of my favourite books! Hope one day I can go again to the Acropolis and buy other books from the Stephanides Brothers!

I’ve long been fascinated by Greek mythology, so this series is ideal! Unfortunately this first book was in parts a bit of a slog - it read more like a dry reference book listing facts and places rather than exploring the rich and deep tapestry of the stories. Fortunately I read one of the later books first (they are all self-contained in some respects) and do I know the style gets better.

Bought it and read it while visiting Athens. Perfect book for easy reading over a cup of coffee in the center of Athens or by the temples of all them gods. Also recommended for forgetful people like me who have no recordings of primary school history lessons about Greek gods :))

It’s a cute, quick book but I’ve heard better translations of some of the myths in it particularly that of Arachne and Athena.

Love Greek mythology, perfect little introduction to it. And a lovely souvenir from Athens.

Rating: 4/5 stars That's actually a fun and educational read! Before this, I wasn't well acquainted with the world of Greek mythology, except for a number of greek gods and goddesses that I was fond of. So, I came across this book when I was in Greece last week - sold for 6 Euros in Acropolis Museum. Why not. I wish I knew more about it then. It would've made my visit more worthwhile. After reading this, I realised that the greek gods and goddesses were pretty much f-ed up all of them, except perhaps, Athena and Hestia. It's still interesting to read though, oh my, it's a really fun read I enjoyed the book. For instance, the goddesses Aphrodite and Hera. Before this I learned that people worship their character for being nice, what not - I was wroooooong. OOH dead wrong. Hera was a one jealous ass mother, and Aphrodite was basically a slut for cheating on her crippled husband. Sorry for the strong language But really... I learned a lot and certainly it has changed my perspective on some of these greek gods and goddesses, thank you very much. Throughout my reading, I couldn't help but wonder who and how did they come up with these stories? Splendid imagination they had back then! Other than that, I love the illustrations (wish there were more) and love the narrative style - makes the stories more engaging and easy to understand. I have Book 2 with me and I will sure give it a read.

We get to learn about the creation of the world and all the different gods from a grecian point of view. For most part it was quite enjoyable, but there were a few things that annoyed me a bit. 1. The confusion aka why do the grecians have two or more gods for a certain thing like two gods of music, two of love etc. I'm like whaaat? wasn't that other one responsible for that thing already? 2. These sentenses and I quote: "All of them were mighty gods, but the greatest of them all was Uranus, the We get to learn about the creation of the world and all the different gods from a grecian point of view. Now, however, the mightiest god in the world was Uranus, who wrapped the earth in his blue mantle and covered it from edge to edge." Yes, I know, you already said that two sentenses ago, why repeat it?

Really great book as an intro to the Greek gods and their mythology, so many crazy stories and it was written in a way that's easy to get into. I bought the book towards the end of my vacation in Greece and it really made everything that much more interesting since I could learn how places got their name or how certain legends got mixed with the historical reality. Personally I thought Athena had the best story and it was definitely funny how she helped give spiders their original name. Only downside is now I'll be consumed by even more books about Greek mythology!

I had read Stephanides' works as a child myself and it's great to revisit them now with my 8 year-old son. I had totally forgotten - and was very amused to be reminded of - the captivating story of how the Greek women's loss of the vote, equal status to men and the right to name their children was due to Poseidon's punishment. Of this and other fascinating (and violent) stories about life in Ancient Greece and the myths and folklore around the 12 gods of Olympus you can read in this tome. The Stephanides brothers' transformed the glorious and wicked tales of the Olympian gods in a coherent book of fantasy and adventures. An engaging and fun narrative, with glimpses of the powerful Greek wisdom, that made me want to read the rest of the series. Unfortunately, the illustrations don't match the quality of the writing.
