Interesting novel about the ups and downs of a British couple with three kids, and how the husband and wife meet as university students who with two other friends take a Greyhound bus odyssey across North America. Good read.

I was immediately intrigued by the title of this novel having visited New York and having watched many American sitcoms, I was familiar with the Greyhound bus network and thought a story about adventures on such a bus would make for an interesting read and I wasn’t wrong. The story is set in two time periods charting how Araminta Richmond met her husband Giles, whilst on a Greyhound bus trip she took in her summer holiday from university. The second time period deals with Araminta and Giles’ current situation which after twenty years of marriage and three children is not an entirely happy one. The adventures of the younger Araminta make a stark contrast with the compromises she has now had to make in her life and career due to her family and how the domesticity of day to day life together compares with the fun and carefree days of a blossoming relationship. I am not sure if it is because personally I am closer in age to the older Araminta but I found that I empathised more with her and wanted to know more of her story rather than the carefree adventures of the younger Araminta although these did provide some comic moments. This is a perfect summer read as it’s a quick and engaging read with warm and believable characters and I particularly enjoyed how the ending wasn’t neatly tied up, there was some ambiguity which made for a much more realistic read. I enjoyed it so much that I have already downloaded Beckie Henderson’s first novel A Matter of Degree.

The story of a suburban housewife in England woven with long ago adventures traveling the US by Greyhound. Flow was a bit choppy for me, but the story was fun overall.
