3.5 - 4 stars! Not as exciting as the first two short stories, but definitely worth reading. "On the day you hated most At the time when she died In the place where you first jumped on." Four shows us just how smart and strong he truly is, while it becomes clear why he really needs someone like Tris in his life. Do you really think killing off the main female lead and STILL publishing the back story of the male lead is wise.... Do you really ?? Because, to be honest, I didnt really find Tobias very likable in Allegiant. I didn't and I'm sad about that but THAT IS THE BITTER TRUTH !!! Do you think you can still keep telling us how fascinating Tobias finds Tris ...??!! Wasn't it bad enough you KILL off the lead, but NOooOOoo !! You HAVE to rub it in our face saying, "HA HA Really? But being the super hardcore Divergent fan I am, I am gonna let it slide, think of ponies and rainbows and I am gonna read this book. I am gonna will myself to do that !! ^TRYING TO BE STRONG^ BUT LET ME REMIND YOU , VERONICA, IT IS , NOT COOL TO KILL OFF A MAIN CHARACTER LIKE THAT !!

The screen changes, presenting me with a new program. I raise my eyebrows. I must have absorbed more than I thought. I start the next one in the same way, moving from the center of the code to the outside, checking the top of the program with the bottom, paying attention to quotation marks and periods and backslashes. It's my least favorite thus far. It was really slow, unexciting, and to be honest, it was very boring. But... it wasn't horrible either. This takes place right after he becomes a Dauntless member and gets his apartment and chooses his career path. This novella includes the moment that Four finds out that his mother Evelyn is still alive. But most importantly it shows that Four found out that Max, Eric, and Jeanine were planning something BIG against Abnegation (which all goes down at the end of Divergent) two years prior. And he does absolutely NOTHING to prevent it. Wow, that's some heroicness right there 😠. This just didn't seem very Four like to me. Oh, and he also acknowledges the fact that Dauntless won't be his home forever. I really really didn't like that it changed my opinion of Four even in the slightest and changed the facts I thought I knew in Divergent and Insurgent. Moving onto, #0.4 The Traitor

These short-stories by Veronica Roth are more interesting than the entire Divergent series IMO. May be it has something to do with my love for Four and these short-stories are from his POV. The Son shows us how strong Four is and also how broken he was when he learns the truth about who was breaking into his room. An emotional but amazing read. Four and a half stars. So before I reviewed the last book/part I should have read this one first. I am so impressed by Veronica's writing ability. Everything that I wish was different because it was "boring" or "simple" had a purpose behind it and was explained in this book. Wow! She is a great writer and this book is very addictive. I like these books way more than 2nd and 3rd books in the trilogy. So before I reviewed the last book/part I should have read this one first. I am so impressed by Veronica's writing ability. He wants someone like Eric, who will help him establish the new Dauntless agenda, who will be easy to manipulate simply because he's still under the thumb of Jeanine Matthews, someone with whom Max is closely aligned This can be said for a bunch of ppl in GR community and also in this political climate From Four's batch of Dauntless initiate, we can already see Jeanine Matthews sinking her claws into the Dauntless's authority. We got a hint that Eric played a part in it. I have one more novella left and hopefully it will reveal more about Eric and Jeanine Matthews

Full review coming on my blog, the Snark Theater. And this was also completely pointless. We gained nothing, every single plot point was a rehash of what was introduced in the series, particularly in Insurgent. Sorry Divergent fans....I'm not liking these novellas very much. They are not helping. Four is being stripped of all good and of any mystery. The additional info on Four isn't gelling with me. I think there are only 1 or 2 novellas of Roth's that I haven't read. I will finish them eventually to satisfy my OCD, but then I will be glad to put it to rest. As such, he’s eligible to choose pretty much any job he wants within the faction. He thinks he might want to be a trainer, but Max, one of the faction leaders, thinks he’s qualified for much more and wants him to go through the process of trying to become a Dauntless leader. This leads to a lot of contemplations on Four’s part as he tries to decide if this is what he wants to do with his life, while also continuing his rivalry with Eric for the same position. At the same time, Four accidentally discovers that there may be something foul afoot between Dauntless and Erudite, which makes him realize that hiding his “differences” are all the more important. Also for the first time, he hears the term Divergent applied to his awareness during simulations, and he also deals with a shocking revelation from his past. The more of these novellas I read about Four, the more I’m convinced the Divergent series as a whole would have been better, IMHO, if either he had narrated it or if it had been done in dual narration. I’ve been enjoying these stories more than the main part of the series, and one of the reasons why is because they’re written in Four’s perspective. I feel like his character is really developing and coming alive in my mind’s eye far better than he ever did before. And for some reason, this particular story seemed to have an even deeper POV than the previous two or the series in general. Four is still the loner, preferring to take up residence in his own apartment after initiation, rather than with others within the faction, but he does still have a few friends. He also struggles between his two identities as someone who supposedly tested with an aptitude for Abnegation, but fearing his father’s abuse, chose to leave and become Dauntless. Four really starts figuring things out, both in his own life and in the events that are going on around him, which leads to more introspection. Overall, it was a really good read that I very much enjoyed. In addition to feeling more engaged in Four’s POV, I liked seeing more of the secondary characters who become a part of the main series: Eric, Zeke, Uriah, Shauna, Lynn, and Marlene. I also liked learning about the history of various plot points within the Divergent series and how those things came about. It was enlightening as well as entertaining, and very much makes me look forward to reading the final novella in this group of stories about Four.

In this "short" story we see Four adapting to life in Dauntless and how he started to notice the inner working of the leaders there. We finally, totally understand the exact reason he gave up leadership and how he was almost elected. And it's great to see how smart he is in quickly figuring things out. What confused me were the small inconsistencies I noticed, or think I did. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure Four was semi-surprised to find out his mother was alive. And he was still a little resentful, though later he was a bit of a mama's boy. This story tells us he knew about her being alive way before the events in Divergent and Insurgent. That makes no sense. And towards the end of the story it makes it seem as if he was thinking about joining her later, which would explain why he was so easy later, but then why would he put up resistance if he was already planning on joining her in the future? idk those things confused me about how things took place, but the story in and of itself was pretty good, intriging, and still makes me like Four, so four stars it gets :)

This installment of the "Four Prequels" had some very strange revelations, especially in the context of the rest of the series. I wound up being rather perplexed by the revelations overall, especially since I knew that these were written after the original series! The events didn't mesh well at all with what I already knew.
