This was another book that I taught at Oakland Community College. Ben Carson flew out of the worst situation in the deepest part of Detroit, becoming an Eagle Scout and ultimately Director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins children's Center. He also earned the Presidential Medal of Peace. Carson and his wife are paying back big time by means of the Carson scholars Fund with awards that have gone out to 42 states, and probably more by now. The book takes the reader through his childhood and reveals that his mother, who only had a 3rd grade education, and raised her boys as a single mother, pushed them both into success, expecting more from them than she ever did from herself. It is a true story that will convince people that they have no excuses. It was a very good read and as a teaching book, extremely inspirational.

I thought I’d read this previously, however a friend sent it to me for Christmas and when I started looking over it, none of it looked familiar. So I read it properly and certainly was inspired by the story of Ben Carson and his humble beginnings and overcoming prejudice to become a very skilled neurosurgeon, able to restore hope to many families.

The first couple chapters of this book were painful: preachy and condescending. Luckily I kept going. This turned out to be a great book. It is a biography of Ben Carson a neruosurgeon. It was written for a younger audience. What I found most impressive about Dr. Carson was his faith in God. There were several moments in his life when he needed help and turned to God. His faith always resulted in miracles that changed the direction his life would have done otherwise. There were several moments in his life when he needed help and turned to God. His faith always resulted in miracles that changed the direction his life would have done otherwise. He is the first to admit that all he has done is thanks to God. The final couple of paragraphs say it all: (quoting Dr. Carson) "I know God had a hand in all these events, just as I know he has had a hand in shaping everything good in my life... "But I want God to continue to use me to help others. I pray every day that I can be the best doctor, father, and husband possible and a caring member of my church and community." An inspiring story and a quick read.

He pursued his education and excelled academically as well as socially to become who we know as the famous Dr. Benjamin Carson. The illustrator shares insight of various stages in Ben's life using family pictures as well as pictures of recognition and achievements. There is also a bonus at the end of the book. I would recommend this book to junior readers and young adult who may need help in defining or finding themselves. It also gives a positive outlook on the importance and value of obtaining quality education.

Amazingly, the next day,we were able to watch a speech given by Ben Carson at the National Prayer Conference. My students were awed that Ben Carson was speaking in front of President Obama and the First Lady. This should be a recommended read for schools! We also followed up with the movie adaptation starring Cuba Gooding Jr. as Ben. The movie doesn't have as much emphasis on Ben Carson's faith, but still is an inspiration for kids to do anything they set their minds to.

I really liked this book. A touching story of a young man who really learned the lessons of life. At the end of his book he tells to Think Big. He proceeds to tell you about each of those letters and sends a message that every one is important in life and what you do with that life is up to you. His examples are excellent for all teens to read. I read this in one afternoon. This young man became a neurosurgeon. He was raised by a single Mom who was herself a very wise lady. I loved this book! I think it would be very inspirational to upper elementary students and middle school students (especially those who struggle in school). Ben Carson learned to overcome his disadvantaged upbringing and racial prejudice mainly by learning to love reading. He went from being a struggling student whom others made fun of in 5th grade to the boy at the of his class just a few years later. God was also and important part of Ben's life and there are many details on this. I loved this book! What a book to read on Mother's Day! The teachings of his mother that kept Ben Carson on the right path to becoming the world's foremost pediatric neurosurgeon,is remarkably inspiring. Add to that his own diligence and hard work, his incredible faith in a living God, and his unbelievable accomplishments, especially in the disjoining of Siamese twins, and I was astonded and grateful for such people in this world. Loved this book! Very good book to get acquainted with Dr. Ben Carson. I ended up w/ a kids version because it was given to my mom to read and I told her I wanted to read it as well. I am so glad I did. Very inspiring. Shows how much you can accomplish if you just trust in God and the gifts God gave you to use to help others. I can't wait to get other books by him as well. I read this book about five years ago. My book club loved Carson's story, growing up with little means and becoming a world renown surgeon. The club members were so encouraged by his story that we grabbed up every copy we could find of his book to give to Girls' and Boys' Clubs. But after the events of the last 12 months, we're all scratching our heads wondering what went wrong. I read this book about five years ago. His name would be Benjamin Solomon Carson. In the book Gifted Hands it talks about Ben Carson and his life story and how he came to be one of the best Neurosurgeons. I truly recommend this book to every single person in the world honestly, it was such an amazing book and very inspirational to me. Gifted hands was truly one of the best books I’ve ever read, it tells so much about a poor kid who just grew up to not settle for just being original or just the same as everybody else, he faced so many odds in his life that to most people would use as an excuse as to why they wouldn’t be able to succeed in their life. But Ben Carson didn’t stop when he was poor or when his father left him to be with another family because he was a bigamist. He most definitely used every situation that was against him, and used it towards a motivational outcome. There are a lot of people in this world that are poor or doesn’t have two parents, but very few people try their best to not have to live in that same situation, they are either too “Comfortable” where they’re at or they are into the wrong groups and end up getting killed or become a drug dealer. But one man didn’t choose to be in that same situation, through his will and with the help of his mother and God, Ben Carson became one of the most influential people in my life, having to come from a very poor home same as me, that part really influenced me and opened my eyes because he was poor, much poorer then I was, he lived in a small house or even at his aunt’s house in the ghetto. His father had left his family because they had soon found out that he was a bigamist, his mother had to start working two jobs to be able and support Ben and his brother Curtis. His mother, not willing to depend on the government or become settle where they lived didn’t want Ben or his brother Curtis to have to grow up living like. In the book Gifted Hands it talks about how most people would call Ben Carson a dummy or stupid whenever he was in elementary school because he really wasn’t the smartest kid, he would fail every test he would take and people would laugh at him, it seemed all odds were against the future Neurosurgeon, but his mother took action, knowing that her Kid was doing bad in school and didn’t want him to fail in life, she Prayed to god asking him to give her wisdom. Luckily, God answered that pray, knowing that she had only had a 3rd grade education, Sonya Carson had a lot of wisdom and used it to her advantage in Bens and Curtis’s life. Every day after school Bens mother would make them read books, other then playing outside and watching TV, she would make them read and write book reports over them not knowing that Bens mother couldn’t read but that didn’t defeat the purpose of her still making them write book reports. One of the best things I remember from the book Gifted hands is whenever Ben Carson became close to god and actually began to understand god, Ben as a child and as a teenager had always had a temper, he was never really concerned with it until one day whenever Ben and his friend were listening to the radio, his friend had been making fun of Bens music and so Ben had gotten really mad and pulled out his knife and tried to stab is friend right in the stomach, Luckily his friend had wore a JROTC belt buckle and didn’t go through him, Ben was very frightened and ran home crying. As he entered his house he ran to the bathroom and closed the door and sat in the bath tub still crying his eyes out, he then sat there and realized that he needed to pray with god and so he asked god to please take away his temper or help him control, that instant Ben began to feel different and from that day on he has never had an outraged temper again. Why I would recommend this book to everybody is because no matter how much Ben Carson done in his life he always gave all his credit to god, even whenever Ben was at his lowest, God was still there protecting him. This book was truly so amazing and couldn’t have gotten any better, the only thing I wish they could’ve done was to tell more stories about him, it had perfect detail with every story that was told and made you feel so interested. Ben Carson is truly one of the greatest people that I have ever heard of, I recommend this book to everybody.

I was really amazed to read about Dr. Carson's anger issues and the situation he had with his friend and a knife. It is hard to fathom that someone so talented, with such steady hands and focus, could ever do such a thing. The outcome of that instance was amazing and changed his life for the better. I'm constantly amazed by Dr. Carson and his accomplishments, and I will definitely be reading this biography to my children. To read about the obstacles that Dr. Carson faced and the fact that he was able to overcome them and not only become the youngest Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at 33 years old. Dr. Carson is a remarkable man and his story is one that will never get old!

He has a straight forward way of communicating and accepts no excuses from his readers or himself. This will probably rankle a lot of people. But, after reading this, I have to say that I walked away wondering if maybe it's time for people to do a bit more rankling and quit pussyfooting around and encouraging mediocrity and self pity. Carson gives it to you straight. I think a lot of kids could use that right now.

It isn't often that I read an autobiographical work about a neurosurgeon from Detroit, let alone a black guy from Detroit. I take that back, I never read books about black kids from Detroit becoming prestigious neurosurgeons and performing cutting edge operations that hadn't been accomplished. There just aren't many stories out there like this to read. Ben Carson is an icon if I've ever seen one, and it is a shame that his name is not as widely recognized as the latest pop star or athlete. This man came from the humblest of beginnings with many odds against him to become a giver of life to those desperately in need. Why I am only hearing about this man now provides a pretty clear portrayal on how we venerate the useless characters of society(the athlete and pop star), and fail to recognize the heroes who find their way out of the void to provide something truly amazing to society. Ben Carson's story is one we can all learn from, appreciate, and share with others.

Honestly, I felt like I was reading a Scholastic book from school. It was poorly written, with lots of simple sentences, fragments, and explanation marks. I had trouble not rolling my eyes at some of the "miracles" - finding $10? Dreaming the test answers? Sorry, perhaps I am too old and cynical at this point in my life, but I had trouble buying it. He truly is a gifted surgeon, no doubt about it, but this book didn't grab me, and I didn't particularly like Carson. He seemed a bit pompous, and I suspect he really wasn't liked in school (in addition to the school problems mentioned in the book, that is). Anyway, this is a great message book, but it wasn't a good book for me.

It is a good read with inspirational stories yet only for people who views the world through words of a one man experience.

This is a juvenile non fiction book (the only one in our library system - I didn't know there were other, adult-level books!), so it is written pretty simply. But I loved the story! Ben Carson, with his humility, hard work, and faith in God, is an inspiration - this has made me want to work harder to develop my talents, and use them to serve and help others. I also feel a connection to the story, having lived through the med school and residency craziness. In December our family watched the movie by the same name. We were so inspired by Dr. Carson's life that I sought out his biography for additional details. This is the children's version & I liked it better than the adult version. The children were especially excited when we got to briefly meet Dr. Carson in March of this year when he was the keynote speaker at the Hinman Dental Conference.

I have heard about this book in so many schools that I have been at. I finally got to read it for myself, and it is just as inspiring as people say it is. The book talks about his hardships as a young boy and that although he had times he struggled he always believed he would make something of himself. He got this faith in himself from his mom. After a life of poverty and living in high-crime areas he pushed himself and became a neurosurgeon. This is a great text for all students to read. I feel like a lot of students could see themselves in Ben Carson. This would be a great book to read as a class too and maybe put together some "I can" posters as a project.
