I began this book with a lot of excitement because it has been a while since I last read a book by Lauraine Snelling. I typically enjoy her writing and was looking forward to delving into a new book. This book begins well with great characters and great character development. The story line keeps you interesting and the love interest from Lucas kept me guessing at what may happen next. But, that's where the warm fuzzy feelings ended for me. The story line keeps you interesting and the love interest from Lucas kept me guessing at what may happen next. But, that's where the warm fuzzy feelings ended for me. The character's financial situation was never solved, her relationship with Lucas was still in the development stages at the end of the book, and she was still questioning God in the end. Her relationship with Ransom goes from hostile to non-existent and at some point I got the impression that he had started caring for her. I am sure that Snelling probably has a third book ready to go to complete this series and I hope that book ties up all of the loose ends that were left by this one. Thank you Bethany House for the free copy to review. I have expressed my own thoughts and feelings in this review and have not been paid for this review.

I enjoyed this book much more than the first one in the series. I now see it as a story of a young woman who was always under her Father's supervision and when he died was under the administrator of the traveling "Wild West Show". Another aspect of this story is the discrimination the Indians suffered. I will read the next and final book in the series to discover what happens to all the characters.

What a great read. I do agree with everyone else though, that it is fairly slow until the last handful of chapters. To be fair, I did like the “slice of life” genre it kinda falls under. Very calming and predictable. I really do like the Cassie’s, Ransom’s, and Lucas’s character development. Fairly dynamic. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

This was a good book although the story did drag slightly at some points. I love how Cassie is learning to trust God and all these walls, like being shot, seem to be going up in front of her causing her to question her trust in God. Cassie is learning that God's ways are not our ways. This was a good book although the story did drag slightly at some points. Cassie and her little band have found the ranch land that her father was half owner of but they found that there is already a family living there. Cassie has never had a home before. She has always lived in the wagon or on the trains that took them from place to place. Cassie, Chief, Micah and Runs Like A Deer only want a place to settle down and live like normal people, not show people. Mavis Engstrom and her daughter don’t have a problem however her sons, Ransom and Lucas, feel threatened. Now begins an uneasy truce of sorts as these two families have to work together to prepare for the coming winter. All the characters are so easy to fall in love with and Ms. Snelling is such a wonderful writer that we easily get caught up in everyone’s life. These are wonderful people and we wish that we had these kind of people for our neighbors. There are wonderful themes that flow throughout the story, Family, love of God, home, friendship, hard work and Ms. Snelling makes them all elegant. There are no car chases, nothing blows up however “Whispers In The Wind” is exciting, interesting and will keep you flipping pages as these characters work to deal with their new set of circumstances. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one to know how everything is all going to work out. Whispers in the Wind is book two in the Wild West Wind series by Lauraine Snelling and picks up where Valley of Dreams left off. Cassie has made it to her father's Valley of Dreams and finds that it is already occupied by another family. Not only that, the ranch isn't hers in it's entirety. The deed was written up between her father and the Engstrom family. Meaning, the ranch is only half hers and the Engstrom boys are none too pleased to be sharing. Mavis Engstrom, the matriarch of the Engstrom Whispers in the Wind is book two in the Wild West Wind series by Lauraine Snelling and picks up where Valley of Dreams left off. Mavis Engstrom, the matriarch of the Engstroms, warmly welcomes Cassie as a part of the family and has a small cabin fixed up for her and her makeshift family consisting of two indians and a wrangler from the wild west show. However, not everyone in town is so accepting of Cassie's friends, nor of the color of their skin. Branding the Engstroms and Cassie as "injun lovers", a group of local drunks decide to run them out of town and as a result, certain events cause Cassie to question whether God is truly keeping his promise to be her protection. Through it all, Lucas makes his intentions known to Cassie and professes his love. Cassie is confused. She cares for Lucas but in a way that a sister cares for a brother. He asks her to let him make her love him and this too confuses Cassie. It is with that thought that the book wraps up and leaves us hanging. Honestly, I like Lucas but I just don't see Cassie falling for him. I'm very curious as to how this will conclude and will definitely be looking for the release of A Place to Belong which is coming out in the spring of 2013! About the Author: Award-winning and best selling author Lauraine Snelling began living her dream to be a writer with her first published book for young adult readers, Tragedy on the Toutle, in 1982. She has since continued writing more horse books for young girls, adding historical and contemporary fiction and nonfiction for adults and young readers to her repertoire. All told, she has seventy books published. Shown in her contemporary romances and women’s fiction, a hallmark of Lauraine’s style is writing about real issues of forgiveness, loss, domestic violence, and cancer within a compelling story. Her work has been translated into Norwegian, Danish, and German, and she has won the Silver Angel Award for An Untamed Land and a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart for Song of Laughter. As a sought after speaker, Lauraine encourages others to find their gifts and live their lives with humor and joy. Her readers clamor for more books more often, and Lauraine would like to comply ... if only her paintbrushes and easel didn’t call quite so loudly. Lauraine and her husband, Wayne, have two grown sons, and live in the Tehachapi Mountains with a watchdog Basset named Winston. They love to travel, most especially in their forty-foot motor coach, which they affectionately deem “a work in progress”.

In South Dakota, in the year 1906, many ranchers were living off the land as well as helping anyone in need. Two single men years before had dug for gold and used the money for land looking to the future of ranching together. Did it work out? When the mine collapsed, one man looked to start building the ranch while the other wanted adventure. As a result, they parted ways; however, the deed remained in both names. It took time for Ivar to forgive his friend, Adam, though hearing from him sparingly through the ensuing years, Ivar held onto the hope that eventually the dream of co-owning and operating the ranch would become a reality. Years pass and both men die after raising families in different states and in different ways. Someone shows up one day that will change what is known by the Engstrom family as the Bar E. The children of Ivar and Mavis have never been told of the deed in case no one ever showed up to claim the Lockwood half, but Cassie does show up. Cassie travels to the area, bringing with her the deed her father, Adam, gave her for half ownership of Bar E. She comes with a few friends from a Wild West Show in the hopes of fulfilling her father’s unrealized dream. How would the family react to her showing up? Cassie has known how to trick ride on her pony and shoot since she was six. Now, living out in the middle of the country, how was she going to provide for all her needs? One night a couple of riders come and shoot up the cabin where Cassie and her little traveling family live. In the midst of the fight, Cassie is wounded. Though eventually those who did the shooting are caught, Cassie loses more than she bargained for. Many neighbors are so helpful during her recovery, but Mavis’s youngest son, Lucas, has plans that Cassie isn’t sure she wants to be part of. On top of this, Cassie is overwhelmed with all she must learn in order to survive in her new home. Will she be able to do so? With many wonderful characters and words that paint stunning pictures in the mind of the readers, Laura Snelling shows her gift of storytelling. Through the many characters, scenes, plots, and subplots, she keeps the reader turning pages. While being a work of fiction, the Lord is shown as the answer, rock, and provider that readers can know today. As the weather seasons are preparing to change, cuddle in a chair, bask in the sun, and get lost in a wonderful story. My rating is 4 stars.

He had bought the ranch in partnership with his best friend Ivar Engstrom. Adam's widow Mavis welcomed her with open arms but her grown sons have reservations about the partnership of their father and Cassie's father. Mavis and Ivar had never mentioned anything about owning only half of the ranch and their children. Ransom has his concerns with the fact that this important piece of information was never mentioned until the day Cassie and her friends show up to claim her inheritance which was half of the Bar E Ranch. Mavis had not only withheld the fact that Adam was a partner in the ranch but that she had also been in love with Adam Lockwood before she married their father. She has not revealed the later to anyone. Has Cassie come all this way just leave in order to preserve the peace within the Engstrom family? They are the true definition of family and love and she does not want to cause them problems. Book two was so much better than book one. I felt more connected with the characters and story. The character Chief has become Cassie's shadow and protector even more so since the death of Adam Lockwood. Micah is the animal handler that came along with them in hopes of finding a place to plant his feet. Then there is Runs Like A Deer the Indian woman they found injured on their journey and she has made them her family. All of these people have become a family unit. Mavis Engstrom is the glue that holds them all together including the addition of Cassie's little family. Her young daughter Gretchen is a mini Mavis in the making. Mavis's son Lucas gets ahead of himself most of the time though it is usually with the best of intentions. Her son Ransom is very protective of his family and the ranch. He is a hard nut to crack. But once he cracks it is all good. Her son Jess is off at college and Mavis is not sure how he will react to news that half the ranch belongs to someone else. The author told a heartwarming tale of coming home and uniting a group of people that God had meant to be together for the better of all of them. It is all there love, family, unity, determination and trust in God and their fellow man. I wanted the story of these beautiful people to continue. Looking forward to reading more. I highly recommend this book. I rated this book a 5 out of 5. Disclosure I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House for review. I was in no way compensated for this review. It is my own opinion. If you found this review helpful vote yes or no here.

Cassie Lockwood is a young lady who used to be a star in a Wild West Show. Her livelihood had always depended on her shooting and riding skills, but when the Show is cancelled, she finds herself in a situation where she has to provide for herself and some other performers that have always been with her, without making use of her training. After coming across with a deed to ranch, half to which her late father was entitled, she decides to go to North Dakota and start a new beginning. However, she Cassie Lockwood is a young lady who used to be a star in a Wild West Show. However, she finds that a family is already established in the ranch and has been living there for many years. Mavis Engstrom and her three children have to face the fact that they have to give up and share a good part of their land with strangers. To Ransom and Lucas, Mavis's older boys, Cassie is an intruder; to Gretchen, the youngest one, Cassie is the opportunity to have a sister. It is not easy for Mavis to deal with conflict, but she decides to respect the wishes of her late husband and Cassie's father, the original owners of the ranch. They all pitch in and help Cassie and the others settle. But Cassie's inexperience leads her to question her purpose in life, her worth and her faith in God. Through all her mishaps and tries to understand and perform all what keeping a household implies, Cassie does demonstrate some fortitude of character. I like the fact that she is constantly concerned of others and accepts her responsibilities (although these are practically self-imposed); not many people would face life the way she does. I particularly enjoy Mavis; she is the ever wise motherly figure that is willing to demonstrate a Christian character - unselfish, accepting of others and willing to serve. With the help of Mavis, Cassie will find out that her value goes beyond the chores she is able to perform. "Whispers in the Wind" was one of those books that are good for spending the time, but I would never pick them up again and read a second time. When I started reading it, I did not know that this is the second book in a series by Mrs. Snelling; however, this did not keep me from grasping the main story line, which is quite straightforward. There are some "loose ends," but I may say those are due more to the fact that I am not familiar with the beginning of the story (the first book). Also, it was not interesting enough for me; I am not looking forward to reading neither the previous, nor the next book in the series. It has good Christian principles, so I would recommend it as an easy, clean read. I received a complimentary sample of this book from Bethany House Publishers, in exchange for an honest review. This has not biased my opinion on the book, nor on the author.

Book#2 wild west Wind series "Whispers in the Wind" by Lauraine Snelling I have not read book #1 but still this story held my interest about the daughter of Adam Lockwood, Cassie. Her dad had won 1/2 interest in a wild west show many years ago and pursued his interest in shooting and riding. He taught his daughter from the time she was a little girl to follow in his steps. He gave her a pony that they named Winddancer who was a very talanted horse. One could say it had a lot of "Horse-sense"...To Book#2 wild west Wind series "Whispers in the Wind" by Lauraine Snelling I have not read book #1 but still this story held my interest about the daughter of Adam Lockwood, Cassie. Her dad had won 1/2 interest in a wild west show many years ago and pursued his interest in shooting and riding. He taught his daughter from the time she was a little girl to follow in his steps. He gave her a pony that they named Winddancer who was a very talanted horse. One could say it had a lot of "Horse-sense"...To add to the enjoyment of their shows "Othello" a little dog loved to be in the act and show off. After her parents die and the show isnt able to support the group they disband and she along with some of the group head to a valley in South Dakota where her father, Adam and a friend Ivar had years ago started a ranch where they had found some gold that helped buy the property. The men both fell in love with Mavis who was a dear friend, you would always find the three together. When Adam won the show I believe he left knowing there would be trouble down the road between the three if something didn't change....after his leaving Ivar and Mavis married and had two sons and a daughter. Life was changing once again as Cassie came to the valley with her father's deed to his 1/2 of the ranch. Mavis was happy to see the girl and help her learn their ways but the boys who had never heard of Adam before and how their father had only owned 1/2 the ranch now had to come to terms with this fiesty woman from a wild west show in their midst. This is a wonderful story and you will enjoy is as I did. Cassie has much to learn and the boys Ransome&Lucas realizing the ranch is not theirs alone have to change their way of thinking too. I think Lauraine has a wonderful way of finding the heart of the story and moving it forward..Will Cassie be able to build a home on the Bar E Ranch and fulfill her dreams of raising horses or will she be forced to return to her life of the past, doing Wild West Shows.

This is the first book that I have read of Lauraine Snelling. I enjoyed it immensely. While I have not read the first book in this series I didn’t feel lost or that I was missing out on what took place in it. Right from page one I was drawn in. I loved how the author made the characters come to life. If you are looking for a good Christian fiction book to read this one is for you. I loved that the author brought God and scriptures into this story. It is a book about trusting and having faith. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I wish to thank Bethany House Publishers for providing me with this book to read and review. The opinions are mine alone.
