Perhaps Paul Kareem Taylor said it best in his piece called On the Road Again: Barbara Hamby's American Odyssey: "Reading Barbara Hamby's poetry is like going on a road trip, one where the woman behind the wheel lets you ride shotgun as she speeds across the open highways of an America where drive-in movie theaters still show Janet Leigh films on Friday nights, hardware st Perhaps Paul Kareem Taylor said it best in his piece called On the Road Again: Barbara Hamby's American Odyssey: "Reading Barbara Hamby's poetry is like going on a road trip, one where the woman behind the wheel lets you ride shotgun as she speeds across the open highways of an America where drive-in movie theaters still show Janet Leigh films on Friday nights, hardware stores have not been driven out of business by soulless corporate titans, and where long poetic lines first introduced by Walt Whitman and resurrected by Ginsberg are pregnant with a thousand reasons to marvel at the world we inhabit."

I was fortunate to attend a workshop with Barbara Hamby because her poetry really speaks to me. I love the various forms she uses, and how history and pop culture make regular appearances. I've been highly influenced in my own poetry writing by her style and contribution to the modern form. I was fortunate to attend a workshop with Barbara Hamby because her poetry really speaks to me. Barbara Hamby's poems are always a delight to read. She plays with words, populating her two-page odes with puns and alliterations, history lessons and travel guides for those who lose their luggage in Italy. The reader reads the poems of ON THE STREET OF DIVINE LOVE as if they were chapters in an intriguing whodunit, staying up into the unmentionable hours to read about the bad girl in the mambo Cadillac and the narrator's 1977 Toyota. Li'l Kim and Roy Rogers make appearances. As does an alcoho Barbara Hamby's poems are always a delight to read.
